  • Astronomy Homeowork Help?

    1. Compare the light-gathering power of a large astronomical telescope (aperture 10 meters) with that

of the dark-adapted human eye (aperture 8 mm).

    a. 1.25

    b. 1.56

    c. 15.6

    d. 1.56 x 106

    2. The resolution of the human eye is about 1.5 arcminutes. What would the aperture of a radio

telescope (observing at 21 cm) have to be to have this resolution? Even though the atmosphere is transparent at radio wavelengths, we do not see in the radio region of the electromagnetic spectrum.

You should understand, from your calculations, why humans do not see in the radio region. Recall that the limit on the angular resolution, θ, is found (see p. 89)

    𝜃 = 2.06 × 105

    𝜆

    𝐷

    arcseconds

Be sure to use wavelength and diameter in the same units.

    a. 6 cm

    b. 5 m

    c. 48 m

    d. 481 m

    3. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) flies at an average altitude of 280 km above the martian

surface. If its cameras have an angular resolution of 0.2 arcsecond, what is the size of the smallest

objects that the MRO can detect on the martian surface. To do this, use the small angle formula.𝑠 =𝑑𝜃/2.06 × 106 arcseconds Where d is the distance of the object, and θ is its angular size. This will give the resolution limit.

    a. 0.2 cm

    b. 5 cm

    c. 12 cm

    d. 27.2 cm

    Thanks in advance!

  • Is this descriptive enough? Is it even any good?

The massive slab of volcanic rock was covered with intricate carvings, some showed the birth of the rulers, others showed the four leaders many accomplishments. Calder manipulated the water so that there was a sort of “ramp” leading up to “the meeting place”. As the threesome stepped onto the rock, a tingle seemed to go through each of their bodies. For Karlee it was as if she was transported home, she could feel the freshly trimmed grass under her feet, could smell the spring flowers around her tickling her nose. For Calder, it was much more, it was as if he was a leader, he felt power rushing in him, welling up inside and exploding like a geyser. In his vision he saw himself being praised by thousands of loyal subjects as he proclaimed himself their sole leader. Murigens sensation was simpler, like being home after a long vacation, or returning to a place you know so well, bit don’t visit much. This place was more than just a rock, it had been here since the beginning of time. Even though they were in a crisis, it was near impossible not to feel at peace here.

“You all feel this way because this is a place of balance, no one substance can control it, this makes it impossible to tell where one element starts and the other ends”, the voice of Helios echoed from the shadows.

The three looked around franticly just as a gale force wind through them to the ground.
