  • Does this sound suitable for a middle grade novel?

    .

“Oh you” someone called, the second Ryan had ridden his skateboard through the front gate.

The boy spotted an overweight bald man with hardly any neck standing nearby wearing a high visibility vest and carrying a clipboard.

“Over here now” he shouted at Ryan as he used his pen to point at a spot directly in front of him.

Ryan groaned as flipped his board into his hand and walked over to the man. “What” the boy snapped annoyed that he was being held up.

“Drop the attitude pal that is unless you want detention” the man snapped in reply as Ryan caught a whiff of his horrible coffee stained breath.

“Detention I haven’t done anything” Ryan replied annoyed.

“That is it what your name?” the man asked.

“Why do you need my name?”

“You can either give me your name now, or I can send you to the Principal’s office.”

Ryan was pissed, he had half a mind to tell the teacher to shove off, but he guessed getting sent to the principal office before school even started wouldn’t be a great first impression even by his standards.

    “Fine Ryan Woodburn”

“Well young man school hasn’t even started yet, and you just brought yourself lunch detention,” the man said handing him a bright yellow slip.

“You’re kidding me right it my first day?” Ryan replied.

“Make that a week worth” the man replied handing the boy five slips. “Now I suggest you get inside before I give you any more

  • Does this sound appropriate for a Middle Grade Novel?

Ryan felt like he was about to die from heat as sweat poured down his face, he quickly stretched his school shirt up to mop it off. “Oh, you” the school secretary shouted.

“What” Ryan replied as he pulled his shirt back down.

“You can’t be showing off you’re six-pack that indecent exposure,” she said as the teen rolled his eyes sliding into one of the chairs across from the Principal’s office.

“Look, lady, if you weren’t a hundred years old I might have considered going there but their no way I touching that,” Ryan said smugly as the secretary screwed her face up.

  • Does this sound realistic for my young adult novel?

Chloe Andrews is a self-described nerd. The thirteen year old had never gotten a detention before in her entire schooling career.

She excels at all classes except for PE. She can't stand the idea of playing sports and usually spend the double period (1.5) reading.

One day the teacher bust her and demands that she plays, when she continues to refuse the teacher give her detention.

As the teacher is walking away I picturing Chloe either said "**** off" or "*****". Hearing her the teacher then sends her to the Principal's Office

  • Detention or Suspension - For my Novel?

    Hi

I hoping for some help deciding whether to give two students (both have just started Year 7) in school detention (sort of like ISS) or suspend them. The offences are

    1. Placing a dozen stinky mould infected sandwiches in a classroom while on recess detention

    2. Attempting to start a food fight (this one is a misunderstanding involving the goody two shoe brother)

    Thanks

  • Does this sound like a realistic way to get detention for a spy novel?

School nerd Connor is thrown into ISS (Detention Hall) after he is caught hacking the school computers.

He hacks the computers to wipe off a detention he received earlier in the day because of school bully Jessie (who framed Connor so the boy could delete his detention record)

Jessie was meant to be keeping a lookout but insteads runs to the nearest teacher thus getting Connor busted

  • Detention or Suspension?

I writing a young adult spy novel and my two main characters have both just been busted (one for setting off stink bombs and the other for assaulting a teacher with a soccer ball). Which punishment sounds more suitable

    1. After School Detention

    2. All Day Detention (ISS)

    3. Suspension

  • What it like to be sent to the Principal's Office?

I am writing a novel which involves an eleven year old prankster sitting outside the Principal's Office.

He is a frequently flyer/trouble maker and is regularly outside the office.

I want to capture what it feel like from the boy's perspective

  • Does this sound like a good way to start a young adult spy novel?

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP

Jake Brennan is woken by the first round of beeps. His eyes flickered opened, but for a moment he stayed completely still in his nice toasty bed, curled up under the covers like a bear in hibernation (1).

He rolled out of bed as he walked over to the open bedroom window, his bare feet aching as they touched the rough floorboards. The sun was shining high up in the sky and spilled onto his opened chest and shoulders. Jake was eleven, well but with the body of an fighter and an athlete. His hair, short and spiky that stuck up into the air at the tip of his head was black. His eyes were bright blue and shined brightly against the morning sky.

For a moment the eleven year old stood there watching his classmates dash across the academy grounds racing towards class, hoping they could make it to class before the prefects being their daily tardy sweep and they end up with more detentions then they could imagine.

He wasn’t afraid of getting detention. While he didn’t enjoy having to spend two hours of his afternoon staring at the clock on the wall above the detention teacher head he was used to it. In fact he was so used to it, he couldn’t remember the last time he had made it three days without getting handed a bright yellow slip and getting the word “DETENTION” screamed at him.

After a few minutes Jake decided he better get a move on or else he could find himself in front of the Headmaster being lectured
