How can you make the reader sympathize with a character when they've done something bad? Say, for example, a character kills someone without motive. How can you justify the action and create sympathy?

Do you prefer that dialogue start a book, or description, or maybe even a flashback? Inquiring minds want to know :) Well...my mind does.

Bonus question: If you're a writer, what technique do you tend to start your stories with?

What would your eyes look like if someone had sprayed alkaline or some other type of acid in them? I was reading Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals and when this happened to her in the story I wondered if there would be any physical signs of acid in someone's eyes if this happened to them. Besides obviously impairing their sight, would they cause a difference in appearance if this occurred?

I know you've probably heard (and answered) this before, but I'd like to know. Not all of them hate the others, I have friends who board, friends who ski, and friends who ski and board. I have friends who love boarders and friends who despise them. Please, when you answer, I'd like reasons. And please don't say things like 'because skiers are pricks' because as a skier I don't appreciate that.

I've been thinking about perhaps putting out some of my work on here to be critiqued, but I'm worried about how (if people find it good writing) it will stay MY work, and not someone else's who was out of ideas or too lazy to write an English paper and paste my work into theirs. So, my question to you is,is it safe? If not, are there any good websites to put it up on that are?

I'm writing a story that takes place in Britain, and I'd like to know some quirks and things in British culture (near Bradford) and perhaps things that are accepted in one culture but not the other.

If someone you knew for a few months told you they could do something extraordinary, such as speak to the dead or control lightning, what would you say and how would you feel?

If you were paralyzed from the waist down and had to use a wheelchair, but from an accident, could you still stand up? Or would you just collapse because you have no control of your muscles?

Okay, I was at a party and a neighbor of mine texted me. Throughout the two hours of the party, he was asking me stuff about what was going on, if the party was boring, if he could go with my family on a family trip, etc. But get this. HE'S FIVE YEARS OLDER THAN ME!!

What should I do? He really scares me but I can't avoid him and he has my number.
