  • Sub Box Volume question?

Hello, im currently in the process of building a sub box, but i ran into a slight problem. I have 2 NVX 12' subs calling for a recommended air space of 4ft (2ft each) for a ported enclosure. The closest i will be able to land this well still having it fit would be just above 3ft in a single chamber. would this be an issue, or should i go with a sealed enclosure, as i already know i can make one and still have it fit in my trunk.

  • 4 gauge wire for 90 amps with 100 amp in line fuse?

Hello, im about to hook up my 2 amplifiers to my D block, and then to my battery. The total of the fuses being supplied to the Amplifiers will be 40 + 50 = 90 amps. Will 4 gauge wire be able to support a 100 amp in line fuse (the closest i will be able to get to 90)

  • would hooking up many low wattage subs sound good?

Hello, i was thinking about buying 2 pioneer 12' subs at 300watts rms each, as i feel that 600watts rms is a fair amount of power to be going to subs. However i found some MB quart 12' subs that use 175 watts rms.

Now ill admit that i have almost no use of my trunk, so i could very well hook up 3 of these and still have power to spare, my only problem is wondering if 3 mb quart subs at 175 rms would sound better or worse then 2 pioneer subs at 300watts rms each

  • Recommendation on a 5.25 set so speakers?

Hello, im in the market for 5.25 speakers for my doors. they need to be 5.25, as my speaker size was originally 4x6 which i increased to 5.25 using a metra bracket, so upgrading further to 6.5 isnt really an option, also i have factory tweeter locations, so components are also an option, as im also not sure whether coaxial or components would be better.

Originally i wanted a pair of clarion components (not sure of the actual name of the set), they were 60 watt rms with a response of 40-50k, but they unfortunately dont make them anymore, so im no thinking about the Pioneer 5.25 component set, 50 watts rms with a response of 48 - 29k, since they were about 110$, so i could put some money towards a decent amp without breaking the bank, but nobody seems to like pioneer, so im not sure what to choose at this point.

  • Componants or coaxle 5.25?

I upgraded the speakers in my Grand Am GT to 5.25 size, i heard of people putting in 6.5's in, but im not pushing my luck

anywho, i was looking to get new speakers, since my car has a factory tweeter spot, I figured id get some components, however the only thing really in my price range is a set of pioneer for $110 (im planning on amping them, as well as get a new subwoofer, so i need to divide my money between everything)

However i was looking at a set of kicker coaxle for alittle bit cheaper, and has a more shallow bass response and higher RMS power

so which would give the better sound, or if anyone has any other ideas for what i can put in it would also be helpful

  • What does the world of yahoo answers consider "Rice"?

Hello, I was planning out some things to do to my V6 since the summer is apon us. and i thought to myself "where is the borderline between nice and rice", so i thought id come on here to ask what everyone thinks is "rice". Personally i think Rice would be anything performance related on non-performance cars, or that give no actual performance gains (Civics and "extreme mufflers" come to mind), however, things like appearance mods, or better sound systems (that arent 20,000 watt subwoofers and factory speakers) are not rice, as it gives your a car

your own touch, or you just love music

For example i plan to put in a better sound system, since my factory set is ready to go, and i intend on putting a Legend of Zelda Triforce decal on my trunk, and maybe a few red LED strips in some locations (it will be done right, not some shitty half assed job), as red would go good with my interior, as my stereo and dashlights are red

Do i think its a rice thing to do, no

Do i want my car to be thought of in the same category as a civic with lowered springs, an "extreme muffler" and a spoiler the size of 2 cars? also no

Im just looking for some peoples thoughts on the topic, as there are people who think everything non-factory is a rice modification

  • 2002 Grand Am GT bumper cover on 2003?

Hello, I need a new bumper cover for my 2003 grand am GT, I found a second hand one from a 2002 Grand am GT, i just want to know if they are compatible before i buy it. I found some online retailers selling bumpers good for 99-05 GTs, and some only good for 99-02 and others for 03-05. Looking at it , it seems pretty damn smiler to my original.

  • Headlight dimming stopped with new stereo?

So i used to have moderate headlight dimming when i was running an older kenwood model stereo, think it was a KDC-152 model, only had one rca 2v output. Anyway i was going to install a capacitor to stop the issue, but i first went and installed the Pioneer DEH-80prs, has 5v rca outputs. started playing my subwoofer and now there is almost no headlight dimming, like you need to actually focus on the light in order to notice.

If im not generating power simply from a headunit swap, where is the magic electricity coming from that is allowing me for power my sub (which actually hits harder now actually hits harder too) without it draining my headlight power?

  • Looking for good car speakers for mids?

Hello, im looking for some ideas for a good 5.25 sized speaker for mids. I currently got running a Pioneer DEH 80prs, which has a built in 3 way crossover. So what i want to do it use my sub for my lows, and amp some speakers and tweeters for my mids and highs, only problem is that I have no idea what frequency response to go for, since im not picking out speakers for bass.

An idea i had was to go ether a Pioneer TS-G1344R 2 way with TS-T110 for tweeters, or spend a bit more and go with Alpine SPS-510 with some Alpine SPS-110TW for tweeters. The alpines have more rms power but the pioneer has a wider frequency range, this is why im having trouble with speaker selection, as i didnt have this problem picking out a sub

Im trying to stay around the 50watt rms range, as i wouldnt be listening to music higher then that and i dont think my battery could handle a 75-100 watt amp, as its already having slight headlight dimming with my pioneer sub and 25x8 factory speaker amplifier, at least with a 50x4 amp everything will still be the same power wise

im also open to other suggestions or words of wisdom toward this topic, help would greatly be appreciated

  • repair small spot of clear coat?

I currently own a 2003 Black Grand Am GT. This morning i noticed a small spot, about roughly the size of a nickle on the hood of my car of my clear coat peeling away (i could feel the roughness of the paint compared to the rest of me hood. If i were to very lightly sand this spot with high grade sandpaper, would simply touching up the clear coat work?

id rather not go through having my hood repainted for simply a spot, since i currently don't have that kind of money

  • Pioneer 14 watt deck?

Hello, i was looking at the DEH-80PRS today, the specs seemed to be almost orgasmic, with a 16 band eq, 5v rca's, an SD card slot, and.....14 watts rms power? why in the hell would pioneer put such a weak amp into a high grade stereo? My first ever CD deck was a sony with the same wattage ratings and it sucked compared to my Kenwood now. My only theory is that pioneer uses a different wattage system then Kenwood, and they both end up pulling the same amount of power, but i don't want to go out and order it just based on a theory and end up using hearing aid just to hear my music. I do intend on buying an amp for my speakers at some point, I just don't want to shell out the money for this, then an amp immediately after, maybe after a payday or 2.

So if there is anyone running a modern day pioneer deck un-amped (as alot of the higher grade ones are pulling 14watts rms), fire a comment about what running 14 watts of power sounds like.

  • Are double din stereos worth it?

I have been running an older kenwood model (before the age of usb or color changing features) and i feel its time for an upgrade. I have been looking at double din video receivers and i have mixed feelings about them. Granted it would be nice to have a touch screen in my car to look more modern (2003 Grand AM GT), i just cant help but feel as though it isnt worth the 300-500$, when i can get a Kenwood Exelon X897 for just under $200. I find that most have no remote, no or very lacking bluetooth, and some have unresponsive touch screens, and crappy audio.

Im basically here to try to find some redeeming quality for double din, otherwise ill end up just buying an Exelon or Alpine single din deck

  • Boss Deck Amp quality?

I plan on swapping out my Kenwood unit with a Boss stereo/dvd player. My current headunit uses a 50 watts x 4 (22watts rms) well the boss uses 52 watts (17 RMS), however i still want decent sound quality for my speakers, which the fronts take up 40 watts rms, and my back 6x9's use 85 watts rms (not amped)

what kind of sound quality would i get with a head unit with these specs which are close to most sony headunits ?

  • Window Tint in Canada?

What is the law for applying window tint in Canada? I am 75% sure its no window tint at all (with the exception of factory), but when i walked into Canadian Tire the other day, i noticed a section devoted to window tint, which makes me think "why would they sell it for car purposes if its illegal"

Im asking because spring is approaching soon, and if i could put it on, it would help to keep my black car with black leather seats from absorbing so much heat

  • Can i place my computer on its side?

I have a desk next to my tv that my mid tower case would fit perfectly on if it was on its side.

In theory it would work, since there is no optical drives for disks to get scratched, there are no fans on the bottom of the motherboard/wire storage side that would be blocked, and there is a fan on my bottom mounted cpu that would be covered if it was standing up anyway, so i would actually get better ventilation.

my question is if there is any risk to the moving parts (like my HDD) that could get damaged from it being on its side

also, before anyone says check the manual from the manufacturer, i build it, so there isnt any

  • is my 500 watt psu enough for this build?

    PSU - APEVIA 500w ATX

    CPU- AMD 6350 6 core @3.9ghz

GPU - ATI 7870 ghz edition

    MOBO - MSI 970A-G43 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

    RAM - 4GB X 2 Gskill 8330

    HDD - Barracuda 7200 1TB

    SSD - Kingston 120 GB

    Fans - 2 80mm (built in PSU)

7 120mm (5 on case, 1 in SSD bracket adapter, and cpu fan)

    1 200mm (case)

As anyone can see, this is all being hooked up to a 500watt psu, I ran the specs through the Thermaltake power calculator and came out at 455watts at max load, i just want to know if this seems realistic to anyone here

Also computer isnt actually built yet, so all of this is in theory if ill even be able to manage hooking up all of those fans, and i already plan to upgrade the psu first when its time for a new video card or something like that

  • Grand am BCM beeping issue?

Ok, early today my car battery died after a half an hour of listening to music well i worked. So when i jumped it using a portable battery charger a loud beeping sound started coming from my bcm. It would start off really loud then die down after 30 seconds to a silent beep. Also when i start the car the airbag light flashes for maybe 5 seconds then goes out. Anyone have any ideas about where i should start looking for problems. I assumed it could be something like an alert that my battery is in rough shape, or maybe jumping it did something but i doubt it, since i jumped it using another car before and never had this issue.

  • Replace Monsoon speakers?

I have a 2003 Grand AM GT with the monsoon sound system. When i got the car the rear speakers as well as the HU was f**ked. I replaced the HU with a Kenwood model. Now i want to replace the rear speakers with a pioneer model, but i have heard alot of bad things about hooking 4ohm's to the monsoon amp (having to choose between treble and bass, ect) Anyone have any idea how to hook them up to the amp, or will i just rip the amp out all together and wire it straight to the HU?

  • LED strip to Illumination stereo wire?

I want to install some LED strips on the interior of my car, however i have a somewhat problem. I cannot hook them up to the headlights as planned because the wire isn't long enough from the LED to the headlight, and i don't want to go through the trouble of installing a toggle switch, as if i sell the car, there would just be a hole there.

So it begs this question, when i turn my headlights on, or when they come on automatically, the lights on my stereo will turn on. Can i hook them into the Illumination (orange) wire to turn the LED strips on when the stereo lights come on (so basically when the headlights come on)?
