  • CA: Laid off at 65. What to do?

My father is 65 and he just got laid off from a job as a technician after working for a company for 7 years. He got 7 weeks severance pay and just applied for unemployment. His English is poor and in this economy it is unlikely he'll be able to find a job soon if at all. What can he do besides trying to make ends meet and looking for a job?

Is there any point in looking into getting a lawyer to try to get better severance?

He's healthy. I think. Would it help to get medical exams to see if he can get help from other government programs for people his age? I don't think he would qualify for full disability.

And just in general what are his options at this point?

  • Optometrist added .25 dioptres because the exam took place in a 'small room'. Why?

I just had an eye exam, the doctor took the measurements and made me see well with the machine. It came out to -1.75 and -2.00. Wrote me a prescription. Then tore it apart, added .25 to each one (for a final of -2.00 and -2.25) and gave me a new one. He said it's because the exam was performed in a small room.

I'm about to order glasses online, and I liked how I saw in the prescription he gave me earlier.

How should I go about this? Thank you.

P.S. I didn't ask the optometrist because I didn't want to seem stupid and didn't want to make him feel stupid because he'd made a mistake. It's just he's a temp and it was his first time at the office.

  • What to do about a speeding ticket (CA)?

I live in Los Angeles, CA. I got a speeding ticket by Modesto (4-5 hour drive away) for going 94 in a 70 mile zone. This is my first ticket and I've only had my license for just over a year. I'm 24.

My question is: How much will the ticket be? Do I have to pay it, or what should I do about it. I understand I can challenge it in court, but would I have to drive to Modesto for it or can I get the case transferred to LA County? Can I go to traffic school since this is my first offense? Would I have to drive to Modesto to go to driving school?

Any other advice / insight is appreciated.

  • Flying out of Belarus with different name?

I'm buying a ticket from US to Belarus. I have both passports, but my Belarussian passport has a different last name. Say my name on US Passport is Richard Jones and my Belarussian passport has me as Richard Jones-Smith.

I'm buying a roundtrip ticket to MSQ (Minsk) under my name "Richard Jones". So I can leave US just fine and enter it as well. I'm concerned that I will have a problem passing through security in Minsk because my Belarussian passport is [technically] under a different name.

Any help or knowledge of the process is appreciated. I'd like to know which passport to show and what other [if any] documents I'd need to safely pass.

  • Can you use a regular bluetooth headset with ps3?

My friend has PS3 and I want to get him a headset for Christmas. I know he wants a cordless one, but I wanted to know if I need to buy one especially made for PS3 or I can buy him a regular one like I would for a phone?

Either way, can someone recommend a good one?

    Thank you.

  • What's (50^1000 + 51^1000) % 101 ?

That is what is the remainder from dividing (51^1000 + 50^1000) by 101?

I know this can be calculated w/o a calculator or a device of any sort.

    I'm very puzzled by this.

    Thanks.

  • New 150cc Scooter won't start.?

I've had my Tank Racer 150DS for about two months, and now it won't start.

I drive it every day and there haven't been any problems with the engine before (after all, it is new).

On my way to school, when I was stopping at the STOP sign, I thought my engine was about to turn off, but it didn't. I made it to school fine (about 6 miles). My gas may have been low at this point. I didn't pay attention.

When I got out of school (4 hours later), my scooter wouldn't start anymore. I can hear the starter running, but no dice.

Kick-starting it also doesn't help. Actually it doesn't do anything.

I thought my fuel was low, so I went to a gas station and got some gas and then put that into the tank. I thought it would fix the problem, but again, no dice. So now the tank is full, the starter is going, but still nothing

I think I did something I wasn't supposed to, but I pulled the throttle while trying to kick start it. I read somewhere that this can be bad for some reason.

So, my question is, if it did run out of gas, and then I added some, and it still won't start, is there something I can do (like clean or something) to make it work again?

Or, what other causes should I look out for? I mean it's a new scooter, and I took it to a shop and did full maintenance on it 3 weeks ago.

Also, please don't tell me to go to a scooter repair shop or something. The closest one is 50 miles away and they want to charge me half the price of my scooter just to have it picked up, plus labor (my warranty only covers parts).
