  • How long until I could ride again?

I have torn my ACL and Meniscus playing soccer over thanksgiving weekend at a soccer tournament. I had surgery on Dec. 23:/ so its been a week and a few days already. I can't put pressure until 2 weeks so I'm almost there. I had just started leasing this horse and we were just getting started on our journey together until I tore it:( The recovery time for ACL(anterior cruciate ligament)/ meniscus tears are from 6-9 months sometimes 1 year for soccer, but I'm not sure for horse riding. I am 17 and a senior, going to college this year for a soccer scholarship at a D1 college so I need to recover as soon as possible. I will also be going to physical therapy. I will ask my doctor when I go in on tuesday. I know this is also about how stable my knee becomes as I recover and go through physical therapy. I most likely will start off slowly when i can ride again.

I wanted to know if anyone had any similar experience where they got hurt and it took a while to get back into riding. How long did it take you to ride again? Your struggles with it?

    Thanks:)

  • Riding critique and other questions about riding?

I have been riding for english for 3 1/2 years now. I have changed barns 4 times due to bad experiences and driving issues so I have been taught many different things. At my hunter/jumper barn I was never really taught much and I was there for a year jumping 3'3. So I have now moved to an eventing barn and I recently started leasing this horse. She's amazing and I am so glad I am leasing her. I took a break after leaving my hunter/ jumper barn so I was rusty in the video with the grey jacket. I also play competitive soccer, and in soccer we point our toe down and when we are riding we point our toe up so I feel it is hard for me to keep my heels down and I feel the need to push them down to stretch my ankle muscles and calf muscles. Then my ankle muscles start to ache and go sore when I'm riding. What should I do in that case?

I am kinda confused what the correct equitation is when trotting. Some people trot with their body tipped forward a bit and some with their body back. I have heard from ear shoulder hip and heel we need to be aligned. So whats the correct form. Pictures could help.

I have long legs and she has a round belly. So when I'm riding i feel like it is hard for me to keep my leg wrapped around her. How could I improve that. At my barn my trainer doesn't like to do no stirrup work and my lease horse stops or slows down a lot when I let go of my stirrups. She doesn't like it very much. So i need an alternative to no stirrup work.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBdIVSo-b_I&feature...

Just overall critique me, and also read the description below in the video. I know my leg is going everywhere in the video when I'm wearing the grey jacket. It's because that was my first time riding in a few weeks after the break from the last barn. The red jacket is more recent. I ride 3 times a week but i only have 1 lesson per week and the other 2 are just practice rides. I just want some other people give me advice.

    THANKS:)

  • How to keep heels down?

    I ride english.

So I play soccer and we point our foot down to kick the ball but when riding we point our toe up. I ride once a week and whenever I go to ride I feel that I need to press my heels down as far as they go. I do try and relax my body too though so I am not tensing up. Then my ankles start hurting really badly. I also think my calf muscle was not stretched enough so I pulled it today from pushing my heels down. I am not really flexible. Soccer player have tight hamstrings most of the time haha. Well I know stretching my calves on stairs. But it seems to never be enough when Im riding.

I also feel that I need to push my heels down so my leg stays still when Im posting and cantering. my legs seem to move alot when im riding when i look at my legs quickly when im riding. any ideas?

    Thanks:)

  • What should I do in this situation?

    Read the whole thing please:)

So I am in this situation that has been going on for a while now. I am 16yrs old and I ride horses and play competitive soccer year round. My family is definitely not horse people at all. They like to watch me ride but they know nothing about how much work it is and how you feel so amazing when your riding and taking care of them. I have been riding since I was 6..I started out western with my aunt on and off then started taking english lessons when I was 14. I have moved from 2 different barns and now the 3rd barn was where I knew I fit in. I love it there! I have met some amazing girls there & only 15 min away from my house:) I am only able to go out there once a week! But I miss some of my lessons because of soccer and other outside activities! UHHH!

Anyways, my parents don't realize that without horses I can't concentrate at all. I try so hard to concentrate on other things like school but its hard if I dont see them at least once a week! I also get sort of really sad and annoyed when I dont go out to the barn. Also I dont have a 4.5 like my sister 17 yr old sister i have a 3.5 and I dont get straight A's and she is getting into all these amazing colleges. My dad keeps comparing me to her. It's annoying.

So whenever I want to go play soccer it is sort of like YAH! whenever I wanna go to the barn! .......ummm NO! thats what they always say..I say soccer they say yah i say barn..you have so much house cleaning to do so much work! I cant handle it.

I know I am gunna play college soccer but my dad has high expectations of me and I am supposed to get a scholarship to an amazing college. but i cant when all im thinking about is horses. I need both in my life..they just dont understand! I try to tell them but they think it is just a small hobby that i will get over but NO! i will never get over them.

So my question is what should I do?

p.s. im getting my license in less than a week so that should help. but i want to have a good argument of why i should be able to go out more.

  • My dog is limping? What should I do?

She fell in the pool and while doing that she hit our fountain thingy and now she is limping on her right front leg. I tried moving her leg back and forth slowly and see if she was hurting but she's not. Her leg is sort of shaking when she puts pressure on it. When she sits she puts pressure on it then she picks it up a few times then she puts light pressure on it. When she tries to lay she goes down very slowly. We gave her a bath after she fell and so she gets all excited afterwards. So she was running around and pick up her leg and put her leg down for one second and pick it up again because she was slipping. She knows how to swim and I didnt leave her in there! right when she fell in I saw her and took her out right away!

She is a 6 year old cocker spaniel and a she 22 pounds. Recently when we went to the vet they said she could still lose some weight because she looks overweight a bit.

I cant tell if its swollen because she is hairy. Should we shave her leg and see if it is swollen or take her to the vet right away? or wait till tomorrow?

    Thanks!

  • What do you think about this horse?

I have already asked this question but I would like more opinions:)

So, I am riding this horse at the barn I am at. He was going to go to las vegas for a girl to try him out but if I get him before then he is mine. We have postponed the date. We have this amazing connection between us. His name is Bears he is a 13 year old 16.2hd. Registered Thoroughbred. He is a chestnut color and has the greatest personality. His grandfather is Secretariat, the owner of him now doesn't know that. I looked it up. My trainer and I really don't want him to leave so she asked if I wanted to buy him. He is 10,000 but I maybe splitting it with her for 5000. If I share with another girl in the barn then it's 650 for everything a month and if he is all mine he is 1300 a month with training and food and everything. He is one of those guys where you don't have to ride him for a week and then ride him and he is exactly the same. He was a ex racer but was never raced. He used to sit in his stall a long time so he would weave. He is a little head shy but not over the top. He is overall a really sweet horse. He has his lead changes and he is really comfortable at all gaits. So anyways just wanted to give you some background info on him. I am going to get the vet to look at him and give him a thorough checkup before and then we will see:) He is a show horse and jumps up to 4 feet. He is a bombproof horse does anything you ask of him. I have seen him jump higher at around 3 feet and he jumps it perfectly everytime. Never refuses.

I am very much ready for my own horse. I am 15 and in 2 years I am going to college so I will probably take him with me and show him in college for a few years or sell him right before college.

    http://s134.photobucket.com/albums/q115/%E2%80%A6

    Here's a video of him.

Sorry for the red and black written thing in the middle it will go away later on in the video.

i forgot to add that he is very lazy and then as you get him going he gets going too.

The lady said he recently won champion at a large show with other horses that were worth way more than he is. He does go to many advanced shows and places high in every one.

  • My horse keeps eating the plants when im riding him!!?

Whenever I walk/trot/canter my horse around arena he always eats the plants next to me. They are roses and the arena is outlined by them. I try not to let him do it by not getting too close to the fence but he always seems to get his way. How should I get him to stop doing this?

  • How can I convince my parents to let me ride more?

So I am 15 yrs old, I am a junior in high school, and I am on the verge of getting a soccer scholarship at some colleges. I also love to ride and I am taking lessons right now. I only go once a week and for us it is expensive considering I have 3 older siblings in college. Only $50 for a lesson. My dad and mom keep saying I need to work on my soccer more to get to the fitness of a Division 1 college. Anyways some weeks I can't go because soccer is in the way and then the day I want to go to the barn my mom is saying no we have so much work to do and no one can take you, even though one of my sisters can. I really love riding and horses and I want to go more often. I know I have so much more to learn about riding and horses. Whenever I go I feel so unfit. I can barely get the horse going my legs shake and then my dad expects me to jump higher. I tell him do you want me to get hurt.

I need ways to convince my parents to let me go out more. Riding and being out there makes me so happy and I want to go so much more. Even if I don't ride and I just hang out there and help they won't let me if we have work to do. At our house we always have work to do. Also school and the SAT.

Whenever I go out to soccer they let me whenever I want to go ride they don't let me. I want to get more fit and start making progress in my riding.

Question: Any books or websites that have information on riding and horse care and everything about them. List some if you know some.

    Thanks

  • How to keep my leg still?

I only ride once a week due to the fact that I also play competitive soccer. I can't seem to keep my leg still when I am doing the sitting trot. I look down for a quick second and I see my leg is wobbling like crazy. I know I don't have the muscles yet for riding because it is completely different than soccer, so my legs get tired quite easily. Also the horse I was riding was lazy and it made it harder for me because I am not fit for it yet.

Also, my leg is either too far forward or too far backward. How do I keep it in the right position.

    Pictures would help too please:)

    Thanks

This was before I moved to a Hunter/Jumper Eq. Barn. I am in 2 point the whole time im trotting. My instructor hated when hunter jumper people do 2 point out of the saddle and lean forward.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_profil...

Another problem. I have been riding english for almost a year and my dad is getting impatient because I am jumping only crossrails and little verticals still. I try ti explain why but he just doesn't listen. He says he is paying all this money so I can jump these tiny little things. I need help what do I say!?

  • Should I switch barns?

So I am in a tight situation. I don't know if I should change barns or not. Like a lot of people I am tight on money. I am 15 and I am a junior so I will be going to college soon.

#1 This barn I am at currently, I like it it's just the trainer can be harsh sometimes and it is 30 min away from me. I pay a package so it's 45 a lesson a week. She has horses just only 1 is good. I am interested in hunter jumper and this barn is eventing. I have only been here for about 5 months. The first time I got there in my lessons she would always yell at me and scream. She is getting better but she is still a little like that. She sometimes say's don't mess up my good horse by giving it bad habits and things like that. She is so anal about everything. She does have a nice side though sometimes. I think she is a pretty good trainer though, she could explain things to me a little better though. I take private lessons.

    http://www.goldspiritfarm.com/

#2 I have checked this barn at before and it is nice. It only has one jumping arena. It is a hunter jumper and eq barn so it's good. It is a pretty place and only 10-15 min from me. I could go there any time I would like and hang out. I watched a lesson and it seemed more fun than a lesson but she did give good instruction. I think everyone there is a family and I seemed to fit in well there. The girls are nice and were welcoming. She is said to be a professional rider. It is 50 dollars a lesson and so it is 5 dollars more. The barn above has a dressage ring and a cross country course around it. She also knows a vet I can go with and volunteer with him, because I would like to be a vet so that would be a good opportunity. She is an equine vet and she rides race horses in the morning's. The only thing i'm a little iffy about is the training if it will be fun but serious or just fun and not enough training. I will take group lessons not private because she thinks you learn more from group ones. She has 5 horses and I saw them all when being ridden and they looked like really great horses.

soo what should I do I like both.

  • Which barn would you choose?

    1 http://www.rcknwranch.com/

So I went to this barn today to check it out. The trainer left right before I got there for an emergency but I did talk to the dressage trainer. The people were really nice and the place was beautiful. The place is 25 min away from my house so it is a little far not too bad. The lesson is $40. She has 2 lesson horses. The website shows the facility. I will go again to watch her give a lesson.

    #2 http://horseridinglessonscovina.com/

I also went to this barn today. The place is also really beautiful! It is only 10 min away and the lesson is $50 dollars. I did meet with her and she is really nice. I didn't have a chance to see her give a lesson but I will go back again. She has 5 lesson horses and pony's. Everyone there were very chill. This barn is her private stable, and the first one is shared with the dressage trainer.

The only difference is the drive and the money. My mom does want somewhere close. But then the money is also a issue. My dad say's the money isn't one but I know a little it is and he say's its not about the money it's about the training you get. I know that is true. If you were in my situation which one would you choose?

  • Should I switch to this barn?

So right now I am at a barn where I am not really comfortable. http://www.goldspiritfarm.com/

You can read her background on there also.

I like the trainer but she is just so anal about everything that it makes me mad. I just can't stand it. She is really experienced it's just she can be a b****! It annoys me. The place is 30 min away from me and I feel if I am to lease a horse my mom doesn't want me driving that far a lot.

    Pro's: Organized, Clean, experienced trainer

Con's: far, small, trainer:rude most of the time, not many horses.

    One lesson $50

    I pay $180 for 4 lessons a month

    2ND!

I found this place online http://horseridinglessonscovina.com/

I haven't been to the place yet but it seems nice. If you look at the picture gallery those pictures are her new barn. It is 10 min away from me! Perfect! She seems nice. She has 5 horses and pony's, awesome more than my other trainer. The place also looks nice although she doesn't look like she has a dressage ring but she does have a jumping one which is what I am more interested in. I hope to meet with her and talk to her more about her place. She doesn't do lesson packages so it is $50 per lesson. You can also check her background online also.

I want to have fun! I know people are telling me to toughen up and she might be more helpful than a nice trainer but I just can't handle the yelling. I don't focus well when being yelled at and I get nervous which is bad when riding because the horse can feel my nervousness:/ What should I do?

  • How to get a horse on the bit? english?

I am just learning how to do this but I can never get it right. When I am riding I tend to tighten up and I am working on relaxing. My trainer said that I pull with one hand and release and and then the other hand until it happens while pushing the horse forward but I tend to pull the nose inward and outward when doing that. Also she says to squeeze my fingers. I just can't get it. I can never tell if it happens either. I need some help!

    Another question

How how long to keep the reins when trotting and cantering and also in 2 point. I can never tell if they are too long or too short. Especially in 2 point.
