  • Physics Question? Vectors?

An explorer is caught in a whiteout (in which the snowfall is so thick that the ground cannot be distinguished from the sky) while returning to base camp. He was supposed to travel due north for 5.5 km, but when the snow clears, he discovers that he actually traveled 8.5 km at 48o north of due east. (a) How far and (b) in what direction (south of due west) must he now travel to reach base camp?

At time t=0s, apple 1 is dropped from a bridge... Speed?

At time t = 0 s, apple 1 is dropped from a bridge onto a roadway beneath the bridge; somewhat later, apple 2 is thrown down from the same height. The figure gives the vertical positions y of the apples versus t during the falling, until both apples have hit the roadway. The scaling is set by ts = 2.0 s. With approximately what speed is apple 2 thrown down?

  • Certain mushrooms launch their spores by a catapult mechanism. As water condenses from the air onto a spore... (Only need help w/ one part)?

Certain mushrooms launch their spores by a catapult mechanism. As water condenses from the air onto a spore that is attached to the mushroom, a drop grows on one side of the spore and a film grows on the other side. The spore is bent over by the drop's weight, but when the film reaches the drop, the drop's water suddenly spreads into the film and the spore springs upward so rapidly that it is slung off into the air. Typically, the spore reaches a speed of 1.60 m/s in a 5.30 μm launch; its speed is then reduced to zero in 1.00 mm by the air. Using that data and assuming constant accelerations, find the acceleration in terms of g during (a) the launch and (b) the speed reduction.

I already got a which is 26,100 g, but I'm having a lot of trouble with b. Thanks in advance!

  • From t=0 to t=4.1 min, a man stands still, and from t=4.10 min to t=8.20 min, he walks in a straight line at a constant speed...PLEASE HELP?

Asking this again because I'm so desperate...

    From t = 0 to t = 4.10 min, a man stands still, and from t = 4.10 min to t = 8.20 min, he walks briskly in a straight line at a constant speed of 1.12 m/s.

What are (a) his average velocity Vavg and (b) his average acceleration Aavg in the time interval 1.00 min to 5.10 min? What are (c) Vavg and (d) Aavg in the time interval 2.00 min to 6.10 min?

I've been stuck on this problem for over an hour and a half and exhausting every resource I have to figure out how to do it but it keeps saying that my answers are wrong. Pleeeeease help thank you!

  • Question about half-life/exponential decay?

After alcohol is fully absorbed into the body, it is metabolized with a half-life of about 1.5 hours. Suppose you have had three alcoholic drinks and an hour later, at midnight, your blood alcohol concentration is 0.6 mg/ml.

Find an exponential decay model for your BAC t hours after midnight.

  • Use the Law of Exponents to rewrite and simplify the expression (2 expressions):?

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to simplify these two expressions :(

    [x^(2n) • x^(3n-1)] / [x^(n+2)]

[√(a√b)] / cube root of (ab)

(I don't know how to type in a cube root symbol)

    Thank you so much!!!

  • Careers in astronomy/astrophysics?

I've been accepted into Villanova as an Astrophysics/Planetary Motion major. Physics is my best subject and I've been self-studying astronomy and a bit of astrophysics for a few years now. I'm not sure quite exactly what I'd like to end up doing but right now I'm interested in research/cosmology.

This is something that I have a passion for and can really see myself doing, I'm just trying to gather as many thoughts and experiences as I can so I can kinda mentally plan and prepare.

Has anyone had any experience in this field/in this field currently? What was your education like? Where did it lead you career-wise? Did you always know that it's what you wanted to do?

  • How should I approach my teacher about retaking a test that I horribly failed?

I've been struggling a lot this year with both my mental health and stresses of school (which always conflict each other and make each other worse). I've never used my poor mental health or 5 AP classes (in a schedule that doesn't allow me any lunches or free periods... ever) as an excuse foe anything, but I just got a 36% on a test that wasn't even hard for other people, and that will almost definitely affect my grade for the year, bringing down my GPA that is already looking to decrease.

My teacher isn't the most approachable teacher in the world, so it will greatly help my case (if she even lets me have one) if I go in with a definite ultimatum. I was thinking about asking about a possible retest, but she really isn't the type that would have one for me or go through the trouble of making one up. This isn't horribly uncharacteristic of me as a student, failing a test mean, if you look at my grades, some of them are really good and the rest are extremely horrible. So it's not like I get straight As and this was just a fluke. It's obvious that I didn't put any time into this test, and my anxiety was running rampant all day that day, especially during the test. I know that that grade isn't an accurate representation of what I know, nor how I am as a student, and it's entirely unacceptable. But I don't want to make it seem like I'm making excuses, and I also don't want to make a really unconvincing argument right off the bat that would turn her off of the idea altogether immediately, thus ending any possible negotiations.

So any tips on what to say/what to propose? Thank you

  • Excuses for not going to an athletic event?

I have day 2 of my lacrosse tournament tomorrow and I really don't want to go. I'm exhausted. My dad's gonna come home tomorrow and ask why I didn't go, and I can't just tell him I don't feel well because I did that the last time when I actually didn't feel well. What could I say to excuse it?

  • Any tips on not eating?

I'm not starving myself, I'm talking more about typical cravings. Gum doesn't really work for me. I'm not sure what happened but all of a sudden I just can't put the chips, candy, sweets, etc. down and I can't afford to get out of shape or gain any weight. What can i do to resist cravings?
