One of my chickens is growing more and more aggressive?
Hello, my name is Em and I've got chickens for the first time.
In August 2011 I brought three female leghorn chickens aged around 8 weeks. Naturally they were frightened of humans to begin with so we introduced them to ourselves and our garden gradually.
Over the past few months they've gradually started eating from familiar peoples hands (our family's). However over christmas a family member got very sick and was in hospital. We had to travel across the country, so I left them in the care of a neighbour who came and made sure they were okay and let them out to run around daily.
When I returned they were their normal selves at first, but slowly on of the chickens (Nuggets) has been picking on the other two, pecking at them, squarking at them to keep them away from the food, attacking them occasionally. It's now pecking and biting me and other family members.
Naturally I am very concerned. It's well fed, there's no apparent signs of injury or illness, it's free to run around the garden all day everyday, it's not scared of the dog (if anything, the dog's scared of it). It's not started laying yet although according to the vet they should start laying around March.
Is this just some form of 'puberty' or is there something more serious wrong? And how can I deal with it?
Thanks, Em xxx

1 AnswerProgramming & Design10 years agoPsychiatric assessment?
Tomorrow I'm going up to the hospital to have a psychiatric assessment after being referenced there by my doctor. I'm a little nervous, so I was just wondering, does anyone know what kind of questions they'll ask?
I've already been talked through all the possible outcomes, so I understand them, but I'm unsure about what is actually talked about in this meeting, how it's structured and so on. Any help will be greatly appreciated x
1 AnswerPeople with Disabilities10 years agoWhat should I do with my chickens in the winter?
Hello! A few months ago I brought three brown leghorn chickens as pets and they're all such beautiful ladies. However, I am slightly concerned about what I should do with them in the winter. Last year in our garden we had over three feet of snow lasting over three weeks before it was all fully melted.

This is the chicken coop I own, and yes, whilst the nesting box is high above the ground, I have concerns as to whether this will be okay for them if we receive the same amount of snowfall this year.
Now I am willing to bring them inside and keep them in a fairly large room in our house, however my main concerns are a) the flooring is wooden, so will they be comfortable walking on this, and if not will covering the ground with sawdust and wood chippings like I do in their coop now make them more comfortable? b) How will they cope with (excuse the pun) being cooped up without any access to grass and being in an environment where they will constantly have humans around them where as in the garden they're mostly free to roam by themselves? and c) if they won't cope indoors, how else can I deal with keeping them from freezing and safe?
Thank you for any advice! This is my first year looking after chickens, and since I got the during the summer, I've not yet had to worry about them in cold conditions.

3 AnswersMovies10 years agoWhat should I feed my chickens next?
I currently have three chickens that are just out of the chick stage, but not quite yet adults. They're all Brown Leghorns and very into eating all the grass they can find in the garden!
I've been feeding them chick food up until now, but I'm slowly beginning to run out. I've been advised several different things up until now, so I'm a little confused as to which I should go for. One of the options I've been told to do is to feed them growth pellets instead of chick feed, however others have warned me off it saying that when they do lay eggs (which according to the vets will probably be spring now), they'll not be in a good enough condition to eat for several weeks.
Alternatively, I've been told to put them directly onto chicken feed and put more oyster shell around their favorite areas. As this is my first time raising chickens, I'm a little wary of getting it wrong and such.
If you have any advice, I'd be very grateful for it. x
4 AnswersBirds10 years agoIs my medication strong enough?
I've been on Fluoxetine for a number of months now for depression and social anxiety. Over the past two months or so, I've started to feel depressed again. The best way I can describe it is 'heavy'.
My mood's significantly decreased and I've noticed myself becoming more withdrawn. My sleep is getting worse and I tend to only get an hour or so a night maximum.
After three weeks of these problems, I went to the doctors because I was concerned that my medication was no longer working. I was told that as it had only been a few weeks, it was too early to do anything and it was probably just a phase. Now it's continued though, I'm unsure whether to return to the doctors (like I originally did) or continue like the doctor said a month or so back and hope it's just a phase.
I collect my medication once a fortnight on a repeat prescription, so I no contact with the doctor unless my medication needs a check-up or I make an effort to get in touch. I'd appreciate any advice I receive on this! x
