  • Does Nikon V1 provide focus assistance for manual lenses?

Does Nikon V1 provide focus aid like magnified view or edge highlighting when a manual lens (not autofocus lens in manual mode) is attached?

I have a J1, but Nikon firmware intentionally disabled the magnified view if a manual lens is attached or no lens at all. I don't know whether this is also the case in V1.

  • If I combine a white-light solar filter and an eyepiece H-alpha filter, will it allow me to see/capture solar prominence?

If I combine a white-light solar filter and an eyepiece H-alpha filter, will it allow me to see/capture solar prominence? I think the white-light filter also dimmed down the H-alpha wavelength, so it might not work at all, but I want to be sure. Dedicated H-alpha solar filters are too expensive for me.

  • Android 4.0 with 512MB RAM?

With only 512MB or RAM, is Android 4.0 really unusable? Or is it better to use Android 2.3 instead?

What is the typical memory usage of Android 4 and 2.3 without much app running?

I was wondering why Android is using too much memory compared to a desktop OS like Windows XP or a full blown desktop Linux with KDE or Gnome running fine with just 512MB. I've read from some site that 512MB is unusable for Android 4, why is that?

  • Higher voltage or Higher current to charge a lithium battery?

For a typical Li battery (3.6V), which charger is better, a 5V 400mA or a 6V 350mA? I know that a typical battery needs a higher voltage to charge it. Over voltage however can damage a battery, so is over current. But which can damage the battery more, a higher voltage or a higher current?

  • Using battery to charge another battery how efficient is it?

I know it sounds crazy to do this but I just want to know. :)

Let's say I have 2 batteries of the same type and build (let's assume 2 1.2V NiMH), one fully charge and another empty. I want to use one to charge the other, is it possible (I think maybe yes). There might be a current flow if there is a difference in the voltage of each. About how much maximum charge will the empty one get? Less than 50% I presume?

  • How to deduce that dinos are herbivore?

I do not understand how scientists consider some dinosaurs as herbivores. Are there other indicators aside from their teeth?

I recently observe a common house lizard especially the teeth. It doesn't look very pointy at all yet it is a carnivore. If we judge a dinosaur's diet based on their teeth, how reliable is it?

  • Anyone using EQ-1 for astrophotography?

Is it just me or is there anyone else who insists on using the flimsy EQ-1 for astrophotography? Do they have some results to show? Any improvements been done to the mount and tracking motor?

  • What's the lightest mount and telescope for DSO photography?

What's the lightest/most portable (and possibly cheapest) mount and telescope for DSO photography?

  • What other bright nebulae?

I like to photograph some nebulae. Since my mount is an inexpensive EQ-1 and my tracking motor isn't that great either, I can only manage a few seconds to about a minute of accurate tracking. I have already photographed M42. I am also planning to photograph M17, M8 and Eta Carinae - which I believe are bright enough and can be captured properly with my rather weak setup. I have tried Rosette but was unsuccessful. What other bright nebulae can you recommend with my setup?

I don't want to buy more equipment for now. I'm sure a few DSOs are possible with my setup as I have already captured a few clusters, Andromeda, etc.

  • Telescope upgrade from 4.5" to 6" or 8"?

I have a decent 4.5" reflector. I have an urge to upgrade to a larger reflector, but I do not know whether it is worth it or not. Can someone show me the difference between 4.5" and 6" or 8" (preferably with picture). By the way portability is sometimes an issue for me, so something too large might not be right.

By the way, I know the technical details even the math of such things like resolving power, area, etc.

I would prefer that those with actual experience answer this. Thanks.

  • How to add prompt for reboot in MSI created using Visual Studio 2005?

How to add prompt for reboot in MSI created using Visual Studio 2005? Is there a built-in way to do this or do I really need to create a custom action dll to execute ExitWindows/ExitWindowsEx API?

  • Can a magnifying mirror be practical as a reflecting telescope's primary mirror?

I can't find any good scope seller or an optical shop in our place that sells customizable mirror. I'm planning to buy a magnifying mirror and use it as a reflecting scope's primary mirror. I've heard that the focal length might be short. How short is an average focal length of a magnifying mirror? Is it too short to be used in a telescope or passable as an average quality scope mirror? I haven't bought one and measured it.

  • How are ISO speeds in photography computed?

Is an ISO 200 twice as sensitive as ISO 100, ISO 800 twice as sensitive as ISO 400 ... and so on ? For shooting dark targets such as astronomical objects, will a picture taken at ISO400 require twice the amount of time to have similar brightness as another taken with an ISO800 (Assuming noise are not considered)?
