  • What is causing the loud 'clicking' noise and pain in the joint of my big toe?

10 years ago I was playing football when an opposition player stood on the joint of my foot and my toe with studs. It was obviously painful at the time but I carried for a while before pain took over and I stopped. With rest and ice it resolved and I didn't attend the ED or anything.

However about 2 months later every time I point my big toe upwards, there is a consistent, and often painful, click. Alongside that today after a 13 hour shift at work where I was on my feet all the time, I am in quite a lot of pain in the joint when moving but also at rest.

    What is going on?!

  • What is your opinion about the Windows Surface RT and would you recommend it?

Basically my laptop is on it's last legs. It's been a faithful servant throughout university but now it's decided it can't go on much longer.

I have decided that I don't require a brand new laptop to replace my current one however a tablet might be a reasonable compromise in order to carry on using the internet, watching iplayer/netflix etc.

I have had my eye on the Surface for a while, the reviews on numerous websites from critics and users alike seem good but every person I speak to face to face seems to have reluctance about whether they would buy it themselves.

Do you think it is a good investment (I am particularly drawn to the fact it uses Office and Powerpoint) or would you recommend one of the alternatives out there?

    Thanks.

  • Has anyone else ever had appendicitis-like symptoms despite having had their appendix previously removed?

Going to see Dr, but I have appendicitis symptoms but had appendix removed- what could be the problem?

I am going to the GP first thing in the morning, but wondered if anyone else has an idea, either through personal experience or seeing it another patient etc. But I am very uncomfortable and unhappy, especially as I have had to miss work!

    My symptoms include:

    - predominant 'heavy' pain in RIF, some pain in LIF. Also on/off pain in R and L hypochondriac regions as well 'spasmodic' pains in hypogastric

    - nausea and vomiting

    - diarrhoea

    - incomplete feeling when having bowels open

    - fatigue

    - pretty much complete loss of appetite

I have encountered these symptoms every 1-3 months for the last 4 years. I finally had my appendix out (open procedure) in Aug 2010 which showed mild inflammation before the same pain started again about a week after surgery (I put it down to post-surgical pain even though I knew deep down it was the same pain and the appendectomy was not successful in eliminating my pain).

I haven't been to see a doctor about it because the flare ups last no more than 48 hours, and by the time I get to see a Dr, I feel better and it looks as if nothing is wrong with me.

    Can you help me!?

  • Would you recommend Homeland?

I watched the first six eps and actually found it quite dry, boring and not as tense as expected from the pre-season trailers.

But I have heard good reviews, even from people who I wouldn't think would be 'in to' that kind of TV, so am willing to be persuaded.

Let me know your thoughts Y!A

  • From where can I buy the best Christmas jumper anyone will find this year?

I want to get a bit more in the 'Christmas Spirit' and think a Christmas jumper is definitely the way forward!

Have any of you seen a wonderful example of a Christmas jumper out and about on your shopping trips?

If so, let me know (links would be good too, if possible)

    Thanks guys (UK shops only)

Do you get that much more for the extra price of the 800? That's my main query!

  • Have you heard of South Korean writer Park Jae-Sang?

Here's his most recent piece, translated from his native language into English:

    'Oppa is Gangnam style

    Gangnam style

A girl who is warm and humanle during the day

A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee

A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes

A girl with that kind of twist

    I’m a guy

A guy who is as warm as you during the day

A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down

A guy whose heart bursts when night comes

    That kind of guy

    Beautiful, loveable

Yes you, hey, yes you, hey

    Beautiful, loveable

Yes you, hey, yes you, hey

Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style

    Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays

A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes

A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all

    A sensable girl like that

    I’m a guy

A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays

A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes

A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles

    That kind of guy

    Beautiful, loveable

Yes you, hey, yes you, hey

    Beautiful, loveable

Yes you, hey, yes you, hey

On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby

I’m a man who knows a thing or two

    You know what I’m saying

    Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh'

I think there are some pretty deep themes running through his writing, you will surely agree.

  • Can you recommend a good 'Friday night-in' film that the other half and I can watch?

Can you think of any good & recent films that my girlfriend and I can watch tomorrow night as we have a date night in?

Thinking of something that appeals to me (my preferred genre basically revolves around African political thrillers! But I like most 'action' films, what guy doesn't?) and to my girlfriend (a proper girly girl).

I am enlisting the wonderful wisdom of Y!A to help pick a piece of entertainment we can both enjoy whilst having a few drinks and scoffing chocolate!

    Thanks!

  • What can be done to treat achilles tendinopathy?

What can be done to treat achilles tendinopathy?

I suspect I have achilles tendinopathy and am curious as to whether there is an effective treatment.

I think it is this because over the last few months I have had quite a lot of pain in the tendon, a couple of centimetres above the point where it inserts with the heel bone. It is worse in the morning and before bed but is it at it's worse after walking for a prolonged time (however seems fairly ok when running).

I have had issues previously with 'rolling' of my ankle and do have high arches- is this linked?

Any feedback at all to help reduce the (surprisingly high) amount of pain without analgesics would be greatly appreciated- thanks!

  • Can anyone be so kind to help me with some confidence interval and p value analysis?

Right, I am not a statistician by any means, so apologies if this massively easy for you!

I think I understand, just wishing to check!

The results of the systematic review I am analysing has a lower confidence limit of 0.48 and an upper confidence limit of 1.93.

    The odds ratio is 0.96.

Would I be right in thinking that confidence level of 0.96 is statistically non-significant, as it is encompassed within the CI?

    Thanks!

  • Generally, how do rules of residency and nationality work?

I understand it's different from nation to nation, but would be the outcome of an example like this:

A married couple, both British passport holders that have been living and working overseas, say Uganda, for a period of 3 years on a working visa. At this time they have a child born in Kampala, Uganda. Never at any time have the couple relinquished their British citizenship.

Is the child entitled to British citizenship through parentage? And a Ugandan passport via birth? What is the status of this child!?

  • If you could be one other nationality, what would you choose?

    And why?

I might choose to be Irish. This way I might actually be able to pronounce my own surname!
