  • Hardiest chicken breed (UK)?

Thinking about buying my first chickens in order to have my own eggs. I'm looking for a fancy breed but I need to know they will be OK outside in a coop for the winter. I live in Northern England and we had temperatures down to -15c last year, plus quite a bit of snow, although our graden has lots of trees for shelter, I'd like to know the chickens can take the cold.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

  • ARGH! ****ing loaners! Is there noone out there that wants to give my horse a genuine home while I'm at uni?!!?

I've been let down now by three loaners who have messed me around, the first two neglecting my horse and the last one saying that loaning 'wasn't good enough for her' and she just had to have a horse of her own!

Are there no honest loaners out there that just want to enjoy having a wonderful horse without the cost of buying one??

I'm going away to university in September and can't take her with me, so I am desperately looking for a home for her and just seem to keep being let down. I have advertised her honestly, coming clean about her flaws (she is unlevel in her gluteals, but sound) and telling everything I know about her. Yet I have had tons of people call me and ask if she would carry 13+ stone (she's a 14.3 pure arab), if she'd go county showing, if she'd be a lead rein pony (re the 14.3 arab!) and if I'd sell her, which I have said clearly will not happen. I love her so much and, although she needs to be looked after whilst I'm studying, I don't want to give her up.

What can I do to prevent me from despair??? She needs a mum while I'm an impoverished student but everyone who rings seems to be taking the ****!

  • Does anyone know of a pony looking for a home in Northern England?

I have been let down by the person who was loaning my horse (visited and found my girl turned out alone in the pouring rain with no rug, shivering because she was so cold!), so now I have to bring my girl back home.

I need a companion for her, as she absolutely will not settle alone.

Do any of you kind people know of a pony or horse, mare or gelding, any age, who is looking for a home or just some grazing for a while?

They must be able to live out (well rugged) for the next 5 months, while I am building our new stone stables for them over winter.

I am offering an experienced home, with caring people around 24/7 (our paddock backs onto the house), I will happily supplement grazing with haylage if it is eaten off quickly.

Any pony that could be ridden (under supervision) by a novice 7 year old child or my novice/intermediate OH would be a huge bonus!

I would take on anything from a shettie to 16 hands!

I am an experienced rider and willing to train and school something on a bit if that would sway your decision!

Must be safe to handle, no 'project' horses please, I couldn't put something I don't trust in with my mare!

Please no horses that require continuing medication (unless the owner is willing to pay for it), I am already shelling out for ventipulmin.

Any offers VERY welcome, I am so upset that my loaner has let me down, I need a friend for my girl!

    We are situated in Cumbria.

Many thanks to all who read through that! Even more thanks to anyone who can help!!

Anyone just looking for free grazing who would ride out with me or has an experienced friend who'd like to ride my mare is very welcome :-)

    Thanks again, Freya.

You can PM for my mobile if you like.
