  • With the situation in Ukraine and Crimea, is Russian going to be in demand for military linguists (USA)?

I have considered taking the ASVAB and the DLAB (assuming my ASVAB scores are high enough) because I would like to serve but feel I would fit best as a linguist or med. I'm specifically considering the Air Force, but I'm not sure which would be best in that right either. I am certain I would do well with Russian, but I understand this has not lately been a high-demand language and is not Cat IV, but with this new situation in Crimea and with the seemingly growing threat Russian seems to be imposing, I am curious if this language will be more sought for? In my private dabbling with foreign languages, I did not take immediately well to Japanese or Korean, though Slavic, Germanic, Scandinavian or Romance languages I felt I caught on well enough (currently sticking with Swedish and doing pretty well), though Russian being Cyrillic posed the most challenging in beginner courses as far as recognition of written text. I don't know that I would even qualify to take the DLAB let alone do well on the DLAB. Assuming I did get, say.... 120. What would be the likely-hood that I would be approved to take on Russian? I understand that there are additional factors, like availability, class scheduling and it simply may just be a job that the U.S. military is outsourcing to contractors for the most part. I wouldn't want to get a language in which I wouldn't be useful but I also don't want to go with a language that I can't succeed with, despite my theoretical testing scores. I've read a lot of posts that were fairly recent by Arabic and Pashto linguists deployed overseas who said that they basically were just there in case the contractors were unavailable or to operate equipment and systems that required security clearance. I don't want to go through all of that and just be a waste. What do you guys think? 1) Is Russian a good/bad choice right now, and 2) do you think I would be allowed to request it (assuming grades qualifying for Cat IV).

  • Every once in a while it burns when I pee.?

I'm a male (21) and sometimes when I per I'll feel a slight but annoying burning sensation. This has happened every once in a while since I was about 11. Used to happen occasionally after I masturbated but also happens randomly in the middle of the day. Symptoms usually only last an hour or two and it seems to happen once or twice a month, sometimes it doesn't happen for months. The internet suggests its an STI or UTI, but it happened long before I was sexually active. I doubt I've had something all these years so what could it be? Am I just prone to minor infections or iritations? Does this happen to anyone else? Sometimes it feels like there's cold water in my urethra.

  • If two people own a home, and they have an adult guest. Can one person kick the guest out alone?

In other words, if the guest is living there, free of charge, and one of the two owners gives total consent for the guest to stay, can the other owner kick the guest out? Obviously police involvement would required to remove the guest anyway, would it be possible for the guest to inform the police that they have consent and the other owner be contacted? I own a home with a friend, non-rented in both out names. My best friend has been staying with us because he's having financial troubles. There was never any condition of his staying other than doing chores and trying to find a job. I am away for a week and my room-mate/co-owner is threatening to kick out my guest because he and I had a disagreement (had nothing to do with my guest). Can he legally do this when I give complete consent for my friend to stay? I live in North Carolina. Can anybody link me to some legal information? I've been searching NC law websites for tenants rights, but nothing is relevant to this. I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

  • Is there a low-power OS that will allow me to charge things from USB?

I have been in a situation many times where I need to use my laptop as a charging station for certain devices that I only have a USB cords for, and have to power it up just to charge my other device. Sometimes I have to do this in remote locations, running entirely from my laptop's battery. Now, I know that I can easily make a usb charger from an old cellphone charger for car or wall-socket, but I was wondering if there exists an OS that is so low-powered that it operates solely to make the usb ports of the computer operational for charging other devices. I was thinking something like a bootable flash-drive or cd, that loads once into the ram and then requires no further processing; no keeping time, no internet, no display, no reading from the HDD or CD/DVD. Does this exist? Anything similar? I am not looking for other mobile ways to charge a usb device, I'm only looking for a low-powered distro of some OS (linux, probably), to load for this purpose. Thanks for any help :)

  • Can an employer tell if I worked at a business that is no longer open?

I worked at a grocery store years ago that closed down and is now a church (inorite?). I haven't been listing it on my resumes because I thought that it wouldn't count because they're no longer open, and can't be contacted. Would an employer just assume I was lying or would my work experience count? Would/could the employer contact the grocery's corporate branch to find out if I worked there? I don't want to put something on my resume that's going to make me look bad if I'm listing work experience from places that aren't open anymore.

  • Is there a material that swells/expands when electricity is applied?

I've heard of many things that physically react to electricity or heat. This is the exact instance that fits my theoretical purpose: a tiny dot of this material lays virtually flush with the surface when there is no current, and then swells or expands to be physically noticeable like those dots that are on certain keys of keyboards. Anything similar? Links would be appreciated.

  • "/./" folders in .tar.gz files in Linux?

So I'm trying to alter some archive files in Ubuntu but I'm unable to edit or replace files as you can with 7zip in Windows. I can't use windows, because the directories I need to edit aren't visible in windows 7. Here's what I need to do:

I need to open "Archive.ipk". The ipk-archive consists of a single folder "." which contains two archive files; SubArchA.tar.gz and SubArchB.tar.gz. I need to replace or edit a file inside SubArchA.tar.gz, but the only way in Archive Manager (ubuntu) to save alterations to an archive are by saving as a new archive (cannot save over original, will return error), and when I do that, the directory "." is removed, and so the two tar.gz files are in the root of the .ipk instaid of under the directory ".". This is a problem because I do not believe the ipk will install correctly without the correct file-system structure. Also, if I extract the contents of the ipk, the folder is ignored. Anybody know how to preserve the structure?

  • Sprint MSL (master subsidy lock). Does anyone know how to calculate it?

I need my MSL code and I have been having problems talking to customer service representatives. I tried to activate my phone, and the phone didn't program properly. I have no alternate phone to call customer service from because I've switched phones and the other one is locked out now. I am trying to activate a Palm Pre. I bought it off line but the person who sold it to me didn't do a hard reset and I can't do it without the MSL code. The people at Sprint keep repeating themselves saying that they can't help me unless I have another number to callback from or I can try to activate it on their website (which I tried and it failed). When I mention MSL code they ignore me. Am I suppose to talk to a certain part of customer service? Or does anyone know of a program or something that can calculate my MSL code from my ESN?

  • Why is the connection "local-only" when my friend connects to my VPN?

She's in China at the moment and I created the VPN to workaround China's firewalls so she could access certain sites, but when she connects to the VPN there is only a local-only connection. I set it up on my Vista laptop from what several tutorials all told me to do. I clearly did something right because she's able to connect. I considered the idea that it's because my laptop's internet connection is wireless, but I'm not certain. I was going to try bridging my LAN and WAN connection but I have no idea if that will work. My router has VPN Passthrough (PPTP,IPSec,L2TP) enabled.

    Details:

Router is running DD-WRT lastest release, Laptop is running Vista, Broadcom wireless card. Her laptop is running Windows 7. Also, my laptop has a static IP and is in the DMZ of my router. Windows firewall is disabled (at the beginning, this is what kept her from connecting to me at all) and I shut down my firewall during our connection attempts.

Do I need a LAN connection to give her internet access? ALSO: We tried having her connect before and after my wireless connection was "shared" and it did not change anything. Does anyone know how I can make it so that she has a "local and internet" connection when she connects to my VPN?

  • What are the laws/rights concerning legal adults (that do not pay rent) living with their parents?

If the person is over the age of 18, graduated from High School and is not paying rent, what are their rights and what are the rights of the owner of the residence (parent) as it pertains to the eviction of the child. What happens to their property if the parents decide to kick the child out. I am asking for U.S. Law. More specifically, North Carolina. The situation does not involve anything like theft, violence or disturbances made by the adult-child, simply there eviction. Also, the person in question, although not paying rent, is marked as a dependent on the parent's taxes. I assume dependents carry certain rights a non-dependent would.

I am not asking for "I think so"s or "Well, I'm guessing"s because I already know how to form theories. If anyone happens to have the knowledge concerning this topic of any place or country, or know where I can find this information, please comment.

  • Does Verizon/Alltel still sell/distribute the LG Scoop or LG Banter?

I'm looking to use my insurance (+50) to replace my malfunctioning LG Scoop but I don't want them to give me another piece of sheit malfunctioning Scoop OR Banter....they both have similar or worse problems and I'm tired of it. The Motorola Rival is basically the same phone but a little snazier looking, and made by a different maker. I'm HOPING that they'll replace it with this, because I do not want (as I said) the same phone again. The first one didn't work and the second didn't work. I didn't it was in my policy to return the phone if it was malfunctioning, because it wasn't constant, it would happen SOMETIMES...ugh. Anyway, now it is non-stop shutting it's self off and the battery doesn't even work, I have to use my friend's old battery from when he had a Scoop. I had Alltel but my contract was moved over to Verizon. So....will they give me an LG Scoop/Banter even though they no longer offer it on their site?

  • Is there a way to use the Nintendo DS as a Wii controller on any game?

Is there any way to possibly add support for the DS to the Wii, or maybe run a DS homebrew app that allows me to use my Nintendo DS as a Wii controller? I know it's a feature in the Pokemon Revolution game, but I would like to be able to do this in all games.

  • Windows 7 upgrade + will my registry reset?

I would like to know if I will have to import my registry backup after I upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Will Windows 7 reset my registry? I have a lot of software and I haven't kept very good track of my registration and activation codes. I've lost the installation disks for many of my beloved programs in my recent move and I don't have their serial numbers.

  • Pared Genetic Traits - Are there genes that are separate yet to tend to occur as a pare?

For instance, if people who have red hair have a tendency to also have very fair skin, is it safe to assume that those genes are somehow linked, even if they can exist separately? Are their any genes that tend to occur as a group or pare, even though their mutual existence is not required for either trait to occur?

  • Question for straight guys: This concerns your gay friend and his secret feelings for you.?

Scenario: Your openly gay friend who you openly seem to accept, having only grown closer because of the truth, has secret feelings for you. If your friend were to convey these feelings to you, not with any pressure, but simply to find out if you felt the same way, would you tell him the truth, kindly and continue your relationship now that they have closure and can move on, or would you freak out and never speak to them again, beat them up, attack them, cuss them out, etc. Please give detailed answers/explanation/past experience, what have you. Please be civil, if you can be, but speak the truth.

  • North Carolina + Court Provided Interpreters/Translators?

Does anyone know if, in North Carolina, a person who is not a native English speaker can apply for a government or court-provided Interpreter or Translator to help represent them in court? I assume that someone who is mute or deaf would receive free access to an ASL interpreter for use in court case. I see no reason why a person who does not speak English would not also be provided an interpreter. The person in question does speak English, but finds themself at a disadvantage to the other party and, as the case is of great importance and includes children, it is imperative that they get their case across. To whom it may concern, the person in question does pay taxes and is able to vote legally (I assume they have citizenship) and holds a place of employment in the U.S. . They are not rich, and lawyers are expensive enough without adding payed interpreters to the mix. Does anyone know if something like that would be government-funded or court-provided? Even if there is an organization or department that does deal with setting up such services (even if payed for by the said person) any information would be appreciated.

  • Urdu/Arabic Interpreters in North Carolina?

Does anyone know if there are any interpreters in the North Carolina are that speak Urdu or Arabic. I know someone who finds it difficult to express what they want to say in English, though they are not completely incompetent in English. Their presence is required in a court case, yet they do not believe they will be able to properly make their case and give their story. Their speech is unorganized and they feel at a great disadvantage to the other party.

  • Can I us "Backup Loader" on me Wii without downgrading from 3.4 firmware?

I've read things that say the Backup Loader now works with 3.4 and then the install guides all tell me to downgrade, which is a contradiction to saying that it works with 3.4. Does anyone know the process to properly installing it in 3.4 that DOES NOT include downgrading to 3.2?

ALSO: I don't care that it's illegal, I already know so don't waste my time telling me.
