  • Moving out of country and adopting Filipina citizen step daughter?

I am married to a Filipina citizen and through that marriage got a Filipina citizen step-daughter. How do I legally take her outside of the Philippines? Do I need the natural father's consent? Also, how do I go about legally adopting her? The information I am finding is geared towards children who have been given up for inter-country adoption by both natural parents.

My wife talked to a Filipino lawyer who said that since she had the child out of wedlock, the father has no rights over the child. Sounds too good to be true. He is still on her birth certificate. If anyone looks at the paperwork, I would be a criminal guilty of kidnapping!

  • Attaining American Green Card for Foreign Spouse On Military Orders to Japan?

Given the following conditions, can my Filipina citizen wife and step-daughter enter Japan and receive their American green cards?

    * Approved I-130 application with ready immigration visas

    * Dependent Entry Approval message in hand

    * No travel to an American port of entry

    * Mailing address will be either official (FPO, etc) or local Japanese

I'm sure there many foreign spouses married to American citizens trying to prepare themselves for the eventual day they travel to the USA. What do you do? I know time spent in a foreign country under military orders counts towards time in the USA for naturalization purposes, but I have not read anything concerning green cards.

    Any thoughts?

  • Landlord is trying to charge me an extra $300 after move-out!?

I lived there from August 2007 - April 2009 and had a security deposit of about $500. When I moved out the maintenance man had a walk-through inspection with me and said I would only be charged a cleaning bill. I (think) I have a walk-through assessment but all of my paperwork with this apartment is in my household goods shipment and I won't have access to it until December or January time frame. I left my contact information at my home address of Los Angeles, CA. Approximately in June 2009 my family received a message from them asking for almost $300 more in collections! I was stationed in Japan with the Navy from May 2009 - September 2010. I asked my family for an itemized bill but no word. I'm not sure what happened, if it was my family or the agency that dropped the ball. Now they are asking again for the collection amount plus interest of $39.13 for a total of $314.87.

I have yet to contact to them directly but yesterday I called the management agency and left a message. They have referred this to a creditor service.

My question is, should I continue to try to contact them or try to contact the creditor service? I am not worried about my credit score at all, but I am worried that they may try to bring this to small claims and collect the $300. I am in the military, but the only protection that provides is by prolonging any action. What should I do?

  • Lending money as a sure investment - need help!?

    Here's a question, PLEASE HELP

I have $40000 in mutual funds I can let a friend borrow (let's assume the friend will not default)

$10000 is unrealized gains. I calculated this to be 10000/40000 = 25% (is this correct)?

Now, he is proposing a 2 year loan period, and I'm asking for 15% on the total loan ($6000). That's about 7.5% per year.

Is this smart? Would I be better off leaving the money in the mutual fund and wait for better gains? Also, my friend is nontaxable. Any advice would be super helpful.

  • How is pay in Yokosuka, higher than regular CONUS pay?

I have heard that you get mad money overseas. What are the specific allowances for this? I'm still a little confused. My BAH gets replaced with OHA, so I see no more of that money. OCOLA is only about $400.

I don't see it. Am I missing something here? Where's the extra money everyone is talking about?

  • State residence, need help with taxes!?

I heard that you can declare your future intent to live in a state if you are military. Now, if you are declaring future residency, does that make you a full resident of that state, even if you're just making a declaration but decide not to move there in the future? How does this work for state tax purposes? Is this different from changing your home of record?
