I signed up to yahoo to extend my own knowledge and to educate people on how to look after their animals and help where ever i can. I find some of the questions show complete ignorance and it saddens me that people actually own animals without knowing the basics in animal husbandy. There is no excuse to own any animal then come on here and say a pet is sick but cant afford the vet treatment, I have had owned, dogs, cats, a tortoise (which I had for nearly 40 years), horses, a budgie and fish! and am keen to extend my knowledge via the internet. I am especially interested in alternative medicine as if I can treat my dogs with herbal remedies without the need for invasive veterinary medicines I will.

  • Why is it?

that some people on here ask such ridiculous questions ie: how can I breed my dog, and when you give them a straight forward answer, like if they dont know how, they shouldnt be contemplating it, they give a rude answer? eg: 'jump off a cliff', to me, this just shows their ignorance!!

  • Different rules in USA to UK?

My son has just bought a 6 week old Pug puppy....unfortunately he told me the day after he bought the puppy home. He said there was only one puppy left, he didnt see the parents as the breeder said the stud dog was being 'used' elsewhere which is fine, but apparently the mother of the puppy was being kept at another house since the puppies had been weaned. Now as far as I am concerned, six weeks is far too young for a puppy of any breed to leave for its new home, but he tells me the rules are different in USA? (I am in the UK).

He was not given much advice on feeding other than, give 'about' this much food three OR four times a day, I dont believe any questions were asked about his circumstances.....and apparently the puppy has had some shots a few days ago, and he believed it was OK to take outside. In the UK puppies have their second shot at 12 weeks, and can go out a week later. Is it so different in America, or is this a case of a backyard breeder stringing him along?

  • would you like to look at this?

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple. Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on the purple box "fund food for animals" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

  • A terrible cruelty case, what kind of people allow this to happen?

This is REALLY bad. The whole injury is days old and rotten, the smell was appalling. Her skin is ripped all the way back to her neck and exposes the jaw bone totally. She is now at the vets and she is trying her best to save her, she has multiple injuries but the jaw is the worst....She has her mouth closed in that pic, what you see is the flap of skin hanging down/

She is a Staffie b1tch and not a young one either...

It goes on further to say this poor girl is a victim of dogfighting. She is lucky however and has been offered sanctuary and help via a rescue in ireland EGAR. The vet treatment is going to be extensive and expensive for the already stretched rescue. If you can help by making a donation however small, you can via paypal to donations@egar.org This lil girls name is Bernie and she could do with all the good thoughts you can send her.

Please say a prayer for this girl...

  • Cesar the Dog Whisperer and Crate Training?

First question is who is this Cesar person, what kind of dog whisperer is he supposed to be. My son who lives in America asked me if I had heard of him some weeks ago, and I hadnt, but I happened to catch one of his programmes on Sky last night, and was totally gobsmacked at some of his methods. In the main, all he is doing is using spike collars, which are banned in the UK.........for very good reasons.

And why is everyone so keen on Crate Training on here, why have a dog to shut it in a crate.........it is so cruel.........it doesnt house train them any quicker, if you want a dog you have to be prepared to be at home with it especially in the first few vital weeks, when potty training can easily be achieved......so why is there a need for a Crate? Presmably some American craze that is flavour of the moment?

  • Drug warning for Collies - did you know that..........?

I am sure most of you are aware of the adverse effects of Ivermectin and any associated products of the mectin family in collies, including Stronghold and Imodium. There have also been reported side effects of the painkiller Metacam, which has caused internal bleeding.

    'Imodium® – Warning for Collies

DO NOT GIVE COLLIES IMODIUM® !! It’s the brain barrier block, similar to giving them Ivermectin products (Heartgard 30).

It is well known that Collies and related breeds can have adverse reactions to drugs such as ivermectin, loperamide (Imodium®), and others. It was previously unknown why some individual dogs were sensitive and others were not. Advances in molecular biology at the Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine have led to the discovery of the cause of multi-drug sensitivity in affected dogs.

Here is the link about Imodium - this is very important info http://www.collie-rescue.org.uk/Medicines/dangerou...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Ivermectin Toxicity in Collies

For many years, veterinarians knew a certain pharmaceutical used to eliminate internal parasites in animals was very toxic to a subpopulation of collies. What they didn’t know was why.

Now a pharmacologist at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine has discovered a mutant gene for a key transport protein in the susceptible collies. The gene codes for P-glycoprotein, a large protein complex that acts to pump medications out of the brain and back to the bloodstream where they can be metabolized safely. In the collies that lacked the complete gene for P-glycoprotein, they do not produce the complete protein and cannot pump out the medications. The drugs then build within the brain to toxic levels. P-glycoprotein also helps transport other drugs out of the brain and other tissues in humans and animals, including popular over-the-counter medications.

Discovery of the mutant P-glycoprotein gene may be a key step in screening individuals for certain drug susceptibilities or even pharmaceutical re-design of popular medications to make them safer for all species.'.htm

  • the question is.......do you like this one?

If my Dog wrote the Dictionary

Lead. A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your person where you want him/her to go.

Dog Bed. Any soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room.

Drool. What you do when your persons have food and you don't. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad and let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps.

Sniff. A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dog's rear end and inhale deeply; repeat several times, or until your person makes you stop.

Dustbin. A container which your neighbors put out once a week to test your ingenuity. You must stand on your hind legs and try to push the lid off with your nose. If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and mouldy crusts of bread.

Bicycles. Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards; the person then swerves and falls into the bushes, and you prance away.

Deafness. Affects dogs when their person wants them in and they want to stay out. Symptoms include staring blankly at the person, then running in the opposite direction, or lying down.

Thunder. A signal that the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling uncontrollably, panting, rolling your eyes wildly, and following at their heels.

Wastebasket. A dog toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrappers. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person comes home.

Sofa. A piece of furniture, to dogs as napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean.

Bath. This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

Lean. Every good dog's response to the command "sit!" especially if your person is dressed for an evening out. Incredibly effective before black-tie events.

Bump. The best way to get your human's attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea.

Goose bump. A maneuver to use as a last resort when a regular Bump doesn't get the attention you require...especially effective when combined with Sniff (See above).

Love. A feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return.

  • Dog Stolen?

This is a serious request. A man called Ross Green had his car stolen tonight while at a service station just

off Junction 13 of the M1 on the way home from LKA. His black and white Border Collie Tyson was in the back.

    Car registration details: Registration

KJ55 XFZ, Dark Blue Vauxhall Vectra Estate. Last seen J13 of M1 close

    to Milton Keynes.

Anyone in the area please be aware - and keep everything crossed that the thief at least has the compassion to ensure the safety of the dog.

And please, this is not the time or the place for ignorant comments.
