  • bucking 4 year old???

My daughter's 4 year old bucked her off AGAIN this week and she's on crutches this time. He has dumped her three times now (now once was my girls fault). She is aware that when he gets excited he will sometimes try to throw a buck and she's always been prepared. This time she said it was if he wanted her off right then and there. My husband (an equine vet) palpated his back and he was extremely sore right where the back of the saddle hits on his back so we now know that's what happened BUT my question is :

Since he threw her this time and she couldn't get back on, what's to stop him from thinking anytime he wants to do this he can. She is losing her confidence quickly and that can't happen. She lunges him for 30 minutes prior to riding to get any excess energy out as it is. She's an experienced rider just not as experienced with babies. I am stuck with this guy and to be honest can't blame him for this one either. If I hurt that bad, I wouldn't want someone posting on me.

  • Judging at horse shows?

My daughter was in a horse show just recently and did quite well on Sat (felt that ribbons she got were earned). On Sunday, she was doing a flat hunter class and being that her 4 y/o TB is still young and not all muscled yet, he kept switching leads in the ring (still getting strong and will switch because its easier for him and yes she is working on building the muscles but it takes time). Well out of 15 horses, she won the flat class and I mean he switched his lead right in front of the judge twice. OMG. I want my kid to excel -what parent wouldn't BUT to give her a first place ribbon over 14 other riders is plain ridiculous !!!! When she walked out of the arena, she was actually in tears because she knew it wasn't fair. She actually took her ribbon to the second place winner and tried to give it to her. Now, her horse is a very cute mover but come on. What's going on with this type of behavior ??? I have noticed several people have the same problem.

  • Feed bags??

Our 4 y/o TB is a pain in the rear to feed. He's so curious about what's going on around him, he spits his food out constantly. My husband floated his teeth and this helped a little bit but he's such a pain. SOOOOO I went and bought some feed bags that attach to his head and damn if he hasn't already destroyed one in one week's time. He uses the weight of the feed in the bag and flips it until the latch breaks. Anyone have any suggestions on a good feed bag to use that might last longer than a week. I can't afford to keep spending 12-15.00 a week on feed bags (I will if I have too but would rather not). We have tried other methods of feeding him and nothing else has worked so this was the final method and it works when he's not breaking the bag :)

  • Does anyone use the Pessoa training system and what are your results?

My daughter and her trainer have just started using the Pessoa (actually generic one) training system and teaching Parelli's seven games to her 4 year old TB. I am wondering what experiences anyone has had with the training system. I noticed that its definitely making him use his back end a ton more (noticed by the jiggling in his booty muscles) and since we have absolutely not a single hill here to work him with, this was the other choice. How often do you use the system? We have been doing it for about 15 minutes at a time 2-3 times a week. It that too much, not enough, just right?

    Thanks for your help.

  • Conformation in horse???

This is my daughter's 4 y/o TB. I know absolutely nothing about conformation and want to learn about it. He is used for hunter/jumper. Please use these pics and explain to me what's both good and bad about his conformation. I do know he toes out in the front and I think in the back. He does not understand how to stand square. We tried :)

  • buying a trailer????

I am looking for a used trailer for our horses BUT I know nothing and I mean absolutely nothing about trailers. Soooo at that note, I am asking for help.

We have two horse, 15 QH and 16'3 (still growing) TB. My husband can replacing flooring and we can paint so I am not worried about appearance. Do I need a wide interior, definitely not a regular height -correct??? I need a bumper pull. I have a Ford Expedition that I bought with a trailer package a few years back -has a V8, 5.7 liter engine so I'm not worried about that. Just need the trailer brake box.

What else should I look for?

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Does this horse look like a full TB or a cross ?

I can't figure him out. His dad was TB but we don't know what mamma was. All I know is that he looks like her and she was a huge show hunter. Can you tell from these pics whether he may have some warmblood in him? He just turned 4 so he's still growing. My husband did x-rays 3 months ago and his growth plates are still open.

Its just a silly question but I am curious on what you guys think.

  • How severe is a corkscrew bit and why would someone use one????

My daughter's 18 y/o QH is leased at our barn to a young girl (9). He has been running away with her after jumping and not responding to leg, sitting in the saddle etc. We have had the horse for 6 years and knew him the prior 6 years and he has NEVER needed a harser bit than a D-ring snaffle (he did run with my daughter at the end of her riding him -she's too big for him now). This trainer tried a slow twist and now has put a corkscrew in his mouth-she says he has a very, very tough mouth (my daughter does agree on that) but I wonder why and how harse that bit is.

    Thanks for your help.

  • What is the most embrassing thing you've said at barn, vet clinic etc????

I was at my hubby's clinic last week watching my first stallion collection from this absolutely gorgeous black Fresian. He was excited (very excited) and about to mount the dummy when I said, loud enough for everyone including my daughter's 16 year old boyfriend who just happened to show up, "I've got to get me a big one just like that". :) Everyone had to stop because they were laughing so hard, even the client was there. It was so embrassing and they keep mentioning it to me everytime to go to the clinic.

  • What to do????

Here's the deal. My daughter age 16 has been riding since 8 (had the same trainer for 8 years-we moved to new State). She has been working with this new trainer since Nov and absolutely cannot stand her. I bought a new horse for her to ride (4 year old now) and my girl loves him but this week absolutely told me she can longer ride with this lady. She almost used the word hate and my daughter is the sweetest, most respectul (at least to others :) girl and I have been really adamant that she continue to work this trainer. Now I cannot insist anymore. My daughter told me if she had to continue with her, she would no longer take lessons or possibly ride. That cannot happen. Unfortunately, we are kind of stuck at this barn for the time being (the barn owner's mom who runs the place knows my dilema and has offered for another trainer to come in and I'm working on that) but I have to tell this trainer today that its not working.

  • Horse attachment?

My daughter took her now 4 year old to a show this weekend for his debut and he did really, really well EXCEPT that he is so attached to one of the other horses at the barn. My daughter's horse and this other horse were in a class together and when it was over as they were walking out, the other horse went first and my daughter's totally flipped out when he couldn't see him and bucked (she tried really hard to stay on but fell reinjuring her back). Unfortunately, she couldn't do a harsh reprimand because of the judge and others standing around but it was scary and ridiculous (she did reprimand him but not nearly as harsh had we been at home). It happened again on Sunday (only in that one class where they were together). Any suggestions on fixing this (other than the girls not showing in the same class) at home? He was perfect otherwise, quiet and won almost all his flat classes (no jumping yet) except for this idiotic behavior.

  • Help with hot toweling a horse???

My daughter has a show this weekend and it isn't getting out of the fifties and he can't have a bath (coat too thick). Has anyone ever hot toweled their horse and how long does it REALLY take to do it??? Can she just do his legs and use a coat cleaner for the rest of his body???? What a pain. :)

  • Why did this happen???

I asked a question about a website yesterday and the question was removed. It was a beneficial website, not selling anything. Is it against the rules to put a website on the board???? or did I ask it incorrectly?

For those that are interested, I will try again. If you go to Omoleneuniversity.com, you can earn prizes and food coupons for your horses.

  • Anyone have exercises to help with core body strength???

My daughter's trainer says her core is just not so strong. Any suggestions of exercises to help with this. Yoga was suggested but realistically, there just isn't time in the day for her to take a yoga class. It would take 30 minutes just to get to the class. We need exercises she can do at home with an exercise ball etc.

Her leg is really strong so that's a good thing, but with the accident and not being able to ride so much because of that and rain, she's weak in her core.

    Thanks for your help.

  • trainer woes part II ?

Just a note to thank everyone for their comments, advice and suggestions on the problem my daughter was (key word here) with her new trainer. We spoke with her yesterday (I just couldn't wait another day) and everything worked out just fine. My daughter said she just wanted to know that this trainer cared about her (typical 16 year old girl) and finding out that her trainer does but won't put up with nonsense at the same time was good.

She did a show today (first time in the ring since her accident three weeks ago) and he was a total jerk on the ground (he actually reared up and kicked out at someone) scared my girl but we made her lunge him for a while and they got back on track and she rode in two classes and he was a dream. He's only three and was terribly missing his best friend (another three year old). I had to break to news to him that we're moving them away from each other to stop this problem while its early :)

  • What to do???? My daughter doesn't like her new trainer?

My daughter does not like her new trainer and I have a dilema because there's no place else close for her to ride. We now travel over 30 miles just to ride and board at this barn. My daughter had the same trainer for over 8 years and we moved out of state. This new trainer teaches a bit differently and is tougher which I think is good but my daughter feels like she losing what she was taught and that its totally different from what she was taught. I'm afraid she will want to quit riding (she says no) and I just bought her a new show horse. I've even talked to her old trainer about it and she spoke to my daughter and said that you can always learn something new from other trainers and to give it time. I am at a loss of what to do. I've suggested to my daughter about talking to her new trainer but she's scared to do it and I don't want to do it for her-she needs to learn to do these things on her own. ANY SUGGESTIONS???
