  • Will drugs and alcohol decrease quality of life in college for a non-drinking, non-user?

I picked my college based off of many things; academics, location, extracurricular programs, student diversity, etc... It was only after I had been accepted that I realized that weed and alcohol are a very big part of campus life, despite the college being very small. I don't drink or smoke weed and have traditionally tried to surround myself with people who are similar to myself in that respect. I was absolutely fixated on this school when I committed, as tuition is leaving a significant financial mark on my family. Will being surrounded by people who engage in social drinking and weed-smoking decrease quality of life for someone who doesn't do any of these things? The college is Skidmore College, a nationally ranked liberal arts school which I am positive will provide me with a top-notch education. I am just a bit nervous about the social scene. Has anyone else been in this position? I really don't want to have to transfer over something as dumb as the presence of drugs and alcohol on campus.

  • Am I doing the right thing?

This is a long story so I am going to do my best to shorten it. I am leaving for college in September, and my girlfriend will only be a junior in high school. We've been together for almost a year and a half, but for me, the feelings are gone. It's not that I'm unhappy, but the love isn't there anymore and I have feelings for someone else. Even when we are kissing it feels forced on my part and she doesn't really get me excited anymore. A few nights ago was our worst night ever; I tried to break up with her but five hours later all hell broke loose, there was a lot of crying on both our parts, and long story short, we are giving it one more shot. So, my plan is to take her to prom and remain as a couple until summer vacation starts. Why? Because if we break up now, not only will so many school rituals (e.g. walking her to her classes) be broken, but there will be a lot of awkward tension since we see each other in the halls, have chorus together, and have the same friends. Also, when she is depressed, she can't function; she won't pay attention in class, she won't study or do any homework. That's why I think it's best to end things when there is much less pressure from school on us. I feel bad though, because it fees like I'm faking it just to make her happy. Am I doing a really good thing, or am I lying to myself and being ridiculous?

  • Why can't I EVER get any work done??

I hate the fact that I have ADHD and always try to call it a misdiagnosis. I haven't taken my prescribed medicine on a regular basis in two years due to the negative side effects it has on me. Long story short, I'm involved with numerous extracurricular activities, have been accepted to SUNY Binghamton and Stony Brook, and I've always been a 90+ student. But there are days which I designate specifically to do homework, take my medicine, and get everything done. 9/10 times those days yield little success; I research everything under the sun but do minimal homework because I can't stay focused. I often rely on teachers being lenient for me to get projects done as I rarely turn in assignments on time. I am almost suicidal at this point; I have a girlfriend, a great extracurricular life, but a severe inconsistency with completing work at home. I just don't understand. The medicine hardly ever seems to help anymore, and I don't know what I am going to do with my life. I am positive that I am going to fail my calculus test tomorrow because I've practically slept through the whole unit and done virtually none of the homework assignments. I have stayed home from school twice this year for fear of failing a test or not being able to turn in a big project on time. I really don't want to have to take any sort of medicine in order to be something in life. How can I change this distorted image of a "good student" that I have made for myself into becoming a real student who does his homework and doesn't turn in assignments late?

  • What to do in Iceland?

BESIDES Reykjavik, as I am spending three days there. I want to take one day driving from Reykjavik to ----- and then spend two days in ----- then drive back to Reykjavik and fly home. I was told that Akureyri isn't the best place to spend two days. Where else in Northern Iceland is a great place to visit? I've heard that Husavik has amazing whale watching sites. Also, while in Reykjavik, how would I go about visiting Gullfoss? Can we drive to it? Can I visit it during my three day stay in Reykjavik? I need to book this trip asap and I need to know the best place to spend the last two days of my Iceland trip! Please help! Iceland is my dream destination so I truly want to make the most of it.

  • Should I visit Akureyri, Iceland?

This summer before I leave for college my father is taking me to Iceland, somewhere I've wanted to visit for years. The plan is to spend three days in Reykjavik, three days in Akureyri, and the last day driving back to Reykjavik to fly home. Is there really much to do in Akureyri? I have a LONG list of things to see and do in Reykjavik so I know we won't be bored there but aside from museums and some hiking, what else can we do in Akureyri? Should we maybe only spend two days in Akureyri?

  • Can "A Chorus Line" be performed with an ensemble?

My high school has a no-cut policy when it comes to the musical productions and the directors had the brilliant idea of choosing a show with 18 main cast members and over 50 students participating. So, in addition to the main line, we've got "featured singer" and "Zach's Production Staff". I think this is ridiculous because in numbers such as "Sing!" where line members are supposed to serve as the choir, we have only featured singers singing. Our full company dance numbers are JAM PACKED into the stage area. Do you guys think we could still put on a good, worth watching production of "A Chorus Line" with an ensemble?? By the way, our Bobby is a girl, Larry is a girl, Richie is a white girl, and our directors have censored just about anything that HINTS at something sexual; "Dance Ten Looks Three" is "this and that" instead of "**** and ***" and the dialogue in it with Val, Sheila, and Connie was cut completely. I just don't think this can possibly amount to anything good when it's been modified SO much. What do you guys think???

  • How to combat ADHD without medication?

I refuse to take my ADHD medication because it has more detriments than benefits (makes me sweat excessively, antisocial, depressed, suppression of appetite, I question my existence, horrible stomach pains). I have so many friends since I stopped taking the meds. I am very smart, my gpa is usually above 90, but I can NEVER get work done at home. I sometimes dedicate full days at home on weekends to getting my homework done and I hardly ever finish anything. I'll listen to music, watch videos, go on facebook, text people, dance around the house, research arbitrary topics, and very rarely actually do work. How can I train myself to stop giving in to so many distractions??? It's killing me, I'm so behind in all of my classes the only reason I get good grades is because I'm a really good test taker but when it comes to focusing at home and getting work done I'm a total failure. What can I do? I am leaving for college in July of this year and can't be slacking off then. Please help!

  • How do college transfers work?

If you want to transfer schools after, say, a single semester, is the application process the same as just applying as an undergraduate? Will you still have to pay the full tuition? Will you get any money back from the original tuition you paid? How does the whole process work?

  • My betta fish is dying from a fungus? HELP ASAP?

He is dying. All he can do is lay on his side on the bottom of his tank. If I tap on the tank he flutters his fins but cannot get up and swim around. His tail fin seems to have an algae like fungus growing on it, cloudy-grey in color. He has lost most of his blue color and has turned a cloudy pale color. I'm not sure if this is ich but the fungus on his tail is disgusting and looks pretty crippling. This is him. Please, I love him very much and I want to save him before he dies!!! What is this and what can I do ?

  • Who is this famous painter??

I knew it at one point but I can't remember!! There is a very famous photograph of him painting a self portrait of himself while looking in a mirror to transpose the image of his face onto the canvas. In the photograph, he appears to be very old, thin, smoking a pipe, and wearing shades. I saw this photo for the first time in a long time in the Ray William Johnson (=3) episode titled "Trash Talk" at 3:03. I'm sure someone can give me this painter's name!!

  • I'm 17 and my voice is still getting deeper; I am a singer?

I am a tenor.. or at least I was less than a year ago. My chorus teacher even put me in the tenor II/baritone section. Songs that I was able to sing a year ago, I can no longer sing without belting. Is there anything I can do to counter this??? It kills me that some men like Freddy Mercury, Paul McCartney, Cee Lo Green, Brad Delp, even Serj Tankian etc.. retain their high tenor voices throughout adulthood and I'm losing mine at 17.. when will it stop deepening??

  • Soft classic (or modern) rock ballads?

I'm looking for a rock ballad that is soft all the way through (AKA can be accompanied with just a piano). An example would be the first two minutes of "Come Sail Away" by Styx before the electric guitar comes in. That song is a wee bit high for me but that is just an example. Does anyone know a soft rock ballad that can be played and sung with just a piano that isn't too high? I know that's very specific but my voice isn't exceptionally versatile unfortunately. I am a male by the way and a tenor. Thanks guys!!!

  • How to act out a song?

I will be singing the song "This is Not Over Yet" from the musical Parade at a restaurant for a school fundraiser. I really want to be a good actor but I'm just not sure how I can act out a song like this. I will be standing there holding a microphone in one hand... what motions/gestures/facial expressions can I make so that I really act the hell out of this song? Last year, I sang "This Is The Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde and totally failed at acting out that one. Here is a video to show you what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JK7_aPrGAA Any suggestions anyone? The performance is in less than 3 weeks!

  • Why can I only fall asleep when I'm trying not to?

During school I'll be sitting there listening to my teacher talk and I'll start to drift off and have to fight to keep my eyes open, sometimes to the point that I have to get up and stand to avoid falling asleep. Then when it's finally my lunch period, I go to the library to a comfortable chair and I can't fall asleep, nor can I in my own bed when I finally get home. It is not always in school. I'll be up at 1 in the morning watching a youtube video and I start to fall asleep even though I'm trying to watch the video and when I find that I can no longer fight it, I go upstairs to bed and lie there for about 30 minutes before falling asleep. Why is it that I can only fall asleep when I am trying NOT to???

  • Serious sounding broadway songs for tenors?!?!?!?

I'm not looking for a pappy happy tenor solo, I want to sing a serious and deep song like "This is the Moment" from Jekyll and Hyde and "I Can't Recall" from A Tale of Two Cites. Songs like these usually start out low and quiet and end loud and high and strong. I wouldn't sing something like "corner of the sky" from pippin even though that's an amazing song because I want something deep and serious. Any ideas guys??

  • Why do so many major US cities start declining in population in 1950?

Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, Buffalo, Boston, Baltimore, Minneapolis, all reached their population peaks in 1950 before they began declining in population, with Detroit still suffering and having lost over 1 million residents since 1950. Although NYC is still growing in population today, it too lost population from 1950 to 1960. Cities like Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Columbus and Los Angeles are currently at their population peaks. It's almost as if the east coast is declining in population and the people are all moving west and south. Can anyone explain what happened in 1950 and if New York is going to remain the third most populous state for long?

  • What is the name of this comedy movie about a prison escape?

I remember very little but here's what I can tell you: it's a comedy- very funny. It seemed like an older movie. It's about this group of guys who are in some sort of prison or war camp and they have numerous failed attempts to escape. One of the prisoners is a complete idiot. Their final attempt involves them digging a tunnel underneath the complex. I remember them writing down the plan in the dirt, saying things like "that way is the west gate". Does anybody know what movie this is?

  • Are any invertebrates considered apex predators?

I've been doing a lot of research and sources point to no. I can think of countless invertebrates that are efficient predators; scorpions, spiders, wasps, octopuses, etc... But even the largest invertebrate, the colossal squid, is regularly preyed upon by sperm whales. Are there any predatory animals which lack vertebral column that don't have any natural predators themselves? If not, what is the next best? Thank you
