Verbal agreements: whose car is it?
My boyfriend, Alex, entered into a verbal agreement with his parents a couple years ago in reference to his current car. The deal was that his parents would get a car (a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer) in their name as long as he would make the monthly payments and pay for his insurance. They agreed that once the car was paid off, they would put the title in his name. He has been paying them $200 a month, supposedly $150 for the car payment and the rest goes towards insurance. Alex only has about five payments left before the car is completely paid off.
The problem is his parents are really bad with money. They called last week and told Alex that he had two options: he could either take their gas guzzling '90 something Isuzu Trooper which has a new engine or he could keep driving the Lancer. The reason behind this option is because they are planning on refinancing the Lancer for the total value, essentially taking out a loan against his car for cash. Since the car isn't in his name yet, he can't stop them from refinancing it. They said if he decided to keep the Lancer, he would only have to make the remaining five payments and they would make the rest of them. He just won't get the title any time soon, if at all.
I am extremely upset about the fact that they're doing this. Alex is 21 and has no credit. If he had the title to his car, he'd more likely qualify for a credit card and be able to start to build his credit. Not to mention, his parents will probably spend the money on Christmas presents and other things that they really can't afford. I can't believe his parents would do something like that and put his only form of transportation in jeopardy!
Since they are so irresponsible with money, I'm extremely worried that they might fail to make the payments once Alex stops sending them $200 checks. Alex and I have argued about this with him defending his parents saying that it's their car. I disagree. They told Alex the car was his, he's made the payments and has possession.
Is it still their car given the circumstances? Also, is there anything that Alex can do to protect himself and his car in this situation?

5 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoHow bad will WoW suck on this laptop?
I'm planning on getting an inexpensive laptop to take with me to school. The one I'm looking at has a 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution, a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core T5750 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive and the dreaded Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. It's more than what I need for doing school work and using the internet, but...I'd also like to play World of Warcraft on it as well.
I know WoW isn't very graphics intensive, but I'm worried that it will just be teh suck without a better graphics card. I'm not planning on raiding or even running any instances on it.. I'd mostly just play around on my lowbie characters to kill some time. I've read that lowering the settings will make it run more smoothly, but...just how crappy is it gonna be?
I don't expect it to look or play as nicely as it does on my desktop, but I would like it to be somewhat decent for solo play. So.. is that possible with that laptop or not?
