  • Is it dangerous to compress files multiple times?

Since switching to WIndows 7, my computer has been having some strange problems (my antivirus getting a false positive on a rootkit, wifi adapter randomly quitting, an improper shutdown in the middle of the night). Until I know these problems are resolvable, I'm making it a point to keep regular backups of my important files.

The thing about this is that I don't have, nor can I afford an external hard drive at the moment, with over 30 gigabytes of data to save.

I thought of maybe using the extra storage space on my tablet to keep the backups, but it still might not be enough space. So I'm compressing several folders of important things into 7z archives to reduce the space needed to store them.

My question is, would it be dangerous to take several of these 7z archives, and compress them all into a single 7z archive together? Or would compressing the files this much cause corruption?

  • Windows 8 product key no longer usable?

So over a year ago I got a pre-built computer from Wal-Mart with Windows 8 installed on it. Around January I got a ton of parts and constructed my own computer, using only the hard drive and CD drive from the old one. This resulted in Windows becoming deactivated.

Being lazy and poor after getting a ton of parts, I lived with the activation nagging until now. I reconstructed my old computer and uninstalled the product key so I could use it again on my new computer.

The problem with this is, for some reason I'm being told that the first damn character in the key, 0, isn't allowed in product keys. This isn't some pirated or fake key, it came with a computer that came with Windows 8.

Is there any way I can make this product key usable? I can't afford a $112 number.

  • Can dogs control how their urine smells?

My father is a bit stuck in things he thinks he knows but doesn't know. My dog occasionally urinates on the floor, and my dad says the smell of it changes when the dog is upset or otherwise. He's basically saying that dogs can change the smell of their urine on a whim.

For the sake of proving him (or myself) wrong, is this true, even slightly?

  • Heavily Modded Minecraft Crash: Ticking Entity - Why?

I've been trying to get a persona modpack working that's essentially identical to the Yogscast's Galacticraft-based modpack. I only just managed to get it to work after running into an issue with the Mekanism mod, but now I'm constantly crashing in-game.

The crash reports fluctuate between "Unknown Error" and "Ticking Entity". From what little I can translate, I think it might be caused by something to do with Critical Hit particles...

I haven't gotten any help from the Minecraft Forum at all. I can't fit the whole crash report here, so I'll just link to the thread I put on the forum.

    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2188609-crash-...

What's causing these crashes, and is there any way to fix them? I could really use help.

  • Where can I get some good, old screensavers (Windows 8) that aren't virus-riddled?

For reasons, I have Windows 8 on my computer, and it didn't come with any good screensavers. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some old vintage screensavers like 3D Pipes and 3D Maze, from back in the good old '98 and '2000 days, without giving my computer more viruses than a feral cat?

  • Does anyone know where I can find this old flash game?

I remember when I was about 8 years old, I was fairly new to the internet, and I was addicted to flash games. But there's one that I remember that's imprinted itself in my mind.

I believe the name was "Animenace: Operation P.H.A.N.T.O.M.".

I've Googled it and have come up with few results, most of them related to something called "Operation Phantom Fury".

Does anyone else know this game, and where I might be able to play it again?

  • java.exe closes instantly after executing?

I've been trying to get a .jar file to run, but just double clicking it won't work. I decided to try the java.exe console, but it literally closes a split second after I try to open it... Can anyone tell me why and if I can fix this?

    I'm running Java 7 update 25 on a 64bit Windows 8 machine.

  • How did the "Rim-shot" become a staple of comedy?

Whenever you hear a joke on TV or otherwise, it's usually accompanied by a rim-shot. (Well, less now than it used to be, but still).

Where did the rim-shot originate from, and how did it become such a huge staple of bad puns and "witty" jokes across the world?

  • Orange wasp with circle shapes on its abdomen?

A moment ago, some kind of hornet or wasp was hovering outside my window, and I wasn't able to identify it.

It seemed to be a dull shade of orange across its entire body, with transparent black wings, and it was about an inch long, with a body shape similar to that of a yellowjacket. The weirdest part was that it seemed to have some sort of a circle pattern on the upper part of the back of its abdomen. Aside from that, it seemed to be similar to some kind of spider wasp.

    Anyone know this species? Thanks.

  • Is it possible to kill yourself by eating too much horseradish?

Seems like it would be possible. If not, it's an amazing tool for masochists.

  • When I say "Stomach", what do you think of?

What's your first thought when I say "Stomach"? The abdomen part of your body, or the actual vital organ?

  • Where is the "Combine Harvester" Soundtrack located in Half-Life 2's Game Files?

Combine Harvester is one of my favorite tracks from the Half-Life 2 soundtrack, but I cannot find it in the game's files.

According to the Sector W wiki, it's not used in the game, but it says that the song is located in the game files under the name "HL2_song22_CombineTheme3", but it's not in the music directory of the "source sounds.gcf" file, nor is it anywhere else in source sounds.gcf.

Does anyone know where this music file is located? Or has it been removed from the game's files since the wiki page was published?

  • How well can Valve/Source games run on a 1.40GHz Processor?

I've been playing some Valve games on a new computer, such as Half-Life 2, and most of them run fine, but sometimes, when I look at fire for instance, it lags considerably.

I'm aware that the graphics card on my machine isn't the greatest, so I'm hoping I can fix most of my issues with a graphics card upgrade, but I need to know if my processor will be an issue. As I bought a computer that, unfortunately, has its processor embedded into the motherboard, I'm screwed if it can't run at least Team Fortress 2 (which I've been having trouble with) with at least medium settings.

  • What is ComputerTap.com?

I've been browsing the Minecraft Forums, and found a user randomly posting failed links to .jpg images from a site called "ComputerTap.com", and I haven't been able to find any information on the site.

Is it a malicious website? What exactly is it?

  • How to add Ringtones and Backgrounds to a Samsung SGH-t105g?

Is there a way to add ringtones and backgrounds to my t105g? With the default things, the phone is rather bland... I've tried e-mailing it, and it didn't receive it, and the FAQ on the Samsung site is not helpful at all.

  • Is Chicken Soup really good for you when you're sick?

We've all seen it, heard it and tried it. When you're sick, the best thing you can eat is chicken soup.

You see it in cartoons, and your parents have said it.

But is it actually true? And if so, how?

  • I There a Mod for Portal 2 That Adds High-Energy Pellets?

I was wondering if there was a mod for Portal 2 that could add the Aperture Science High Energy Pellets with their launchers and catchers. If I could find a mod like this, I could make a few fun chambers for myself.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
