  • Debit card # stolen, international purchases, what protection?

    I was just informed that my debit card # (First Bank & Trust) was stolen. In two days, there are over $1,000 in purchases at a gas station in Canada (I'm in California.)

    I just had the card canceled and a stolen card alert put on the account. What kind of protection/insurance is in place with most debit cards? I can't reach my bank's CS line until Monday morning (card stopped by fraud center) and I'd like to know what I can expect (demand?) my bank to cover.

    Is this an "Oh well, we're sorry sir" or is there a limit to the damages I'm liable for? Does the Fed have a blanket protection for customers, regardless of which bank you have?
