  • Which spelling do you prefer - Jacob or Jakob?

Our baby boy is due in six weeks. We have decided to name him Jacob Christopher but I just want to get feedback on whether we should spell his name as the traditional Jacob or as the slightly more original Jakob. What is your opinion? (We plan to call him 'Jake')

  • It's a boy! What name should we go with?

I just got home from my ultrasound - we are definitely having a baby boy. So now we really have to focus on a name.

The middle and last names will definitely be Christopher Douglas. Here are our ideas for first names:

    Jake (Jacob)

Drake (My two older kids love this one)

    Jude

    River

    Gabe (Gabriel)

  • Will Today's Top 10 Names Be Considered Boring and Overused in The Future?

In a previous question I asked why very popular names from the past have vastly fallen out of use today. (Think: Jill, Jennifer, Adam, Mark, etc.) Among the answers was the fact that we all know tons of people with those names and they have become stale, boring and thoroughly overused.

So, I'm wondering if the same thing will happen with the most popular names parents are using today? (Think: Madison, Sophie, Isabelle, Charlotte, Chloe, Aiden, Mason, Logan etc.)

Are we doing our kids any favours by giving them a name that will be considered 'boring and overused' tomorrow?

  • Popular & Boring or Unique & Individual: Why Do Creative Baby Namers Get So Much Flack?

Why do so many parents cling to safe and boring top 10 baby names when choosing a moniker for their child? Why are people afraid of being creative and different?

Personally, I think there is great value in choosing an unusual name.

Choosing a name that doesn’t top the popularity stakes, carves a niche for your child. Babies are incredibly creative. Why not honour that with a creative name?

Celebrities set baby naming trends. Why can't you? Are not celebrities highly, successful people (in many cases?) What's wrong with a little artistic license?

Self-esteem is not ensured by giving your child a bubble-proof name. Self-esteem is built in children by providing them with a loving and validating environment. We're all going to face some awkwardness and humiliation in life. Our job as parents is to give our kids the tools to face those challenges successfully. Their self-esteem is not name dependent.

And don't forget! Names that are popular right now, could very easily be hated by your child once they hit there teens. Nothing is set in stone - they can always change it if they want.

So what do you think? Do you prefer to take the safe route or are you more open to the creative route when choosing a name for your little creation?
