  • Building your strength up for bodyweight exercises?

I'm a 21 year old female. I'm 5'11, around 170lbs. I can bench up to 120lbs and hang clean 145lbs, but when it comes to bodyweight exercises like pullups/chinups, I'm lucky if I can do 2. I'm a collegiate long/triple jumper, so my training regimen consists of mainly mainly do lower body/core exercises. Anyone have any tips on building up my upper body strength for body weight exercises. This year will be my last year as a college athlete, and I wanna go into cross fit after college. My ultimate goal is to be able to do a muscle up and hand stand pushup.

    Thanks.

  • Is there a diagnosis for consuming too little protein? Why is everyone so concerned about protein?

People shun vegetarian/veganism bc of the large concern of getting enough protein. People wanna say it's "unhealthy" or leaves you "deficient" in essential nutrients yet you see them inhaling processed protein powder and fattening meat that they think is apparently so "healthy." Um last time I checked (*organic) fruits and vegetables are the most natural & nutritious foods you could ever eat. Is there a disease that is caused by an extremely low intake of protein bc I don't get why people so concerned about getting enough protein. The way most Americans eat, I don't see how anyone could be deficient in protein.

I'm not 100% vegan because I eat seafood & honey sometimes, but I'm starting to understand that protein shouldn't be the primary focus for health conscious people. Over the past few months I've been decreasing the amount of processed foods and foods with added sugar. I consume mostly raw fruits and vegetables, (at least 60% of what I eat in a day) And my cooked meals usually consist of cooked vegetables, quinoa couscous pasta sweet/potatoes or brown rice, chickpeas or bean, and fish or tofu (occasionally). Half of these foods are lowcal/fat so I eat a lot in a day (college athlete so I workout a lot too)

Even if I didn't eat the fish or tofu and opted for let's say quinoa while eating an abundance of fruits/vegetables & smalls servings of nuts, I don't see how anyone could be protein deficient.

I think the protein craze is out of ignorance.

  • did I get enough protein today? If no should I incorporate a protein supplement?

I've asked this question previously and I've gotten more negative feedback. So I'm an off season college athlete that workouts out 5 days a week(cardio+strength train 3 days a week) I'm currently following a Raw Till 4 High Carb "Cheagan" Diet(still weening off seafood in my transition plus anything accidentals consumption of honey, milk, egg products, but so far I've gone 5 days meatfree) Decided togo 2/3 raw because iI'm semi cleansing from all the refined sugar/processed food I've eaten in the past. I don't think I could ever go fully raw vegan, but I must say I feel energized eating this way. Prior to last week I haven't ran in a lil over month and my runs aren't that off pace than what I would usually run them in when I was in track shape and eating like crap, I haven't had caffeine in weeks, I easily wake up early and I have yet to have the itis after eating. BUT my dad thinks I don't eat enough protein bc he's believes in eating a super high protein diet

but this is what i had today:

    - 4 frozen bananas and cup of spinach blended

    - 20 dried figs(no added sugar), 20 dates

-2 medium apples, 2 bananas and 2 large spoonfuls of almond butter

-20 more dates (been slightly addicted to dates lately lol)

-Large salad: chickpeas, lettuce, carrots, peas, and a lil over a serving size amount of pecans

Is this better???My dad suggest taking protein powder. If I do need to take a protein supplement does anyone know any good vegan protein powders I could use thanks

    5 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan7 years ago
  • for thr calorie counters....how many grams(or percentage) of protein to you consume on avg?

I decided to follow the Raw Till 4 High Carb, Low Fat Cheagan Lifestyle (Still weening off fish) Not quite 80 10 10 ratios but still eating around 75% carbs. I decided to do this because over the past years I've been eating a lot of processed vegan/animal product junk so I wanted to eat semi raw as like a semi cleanse which is working because I have so much natural energy. I feel good.

I run track in college. My season ended a month ago, but I started running again last week to start getting back in shape. I run 3-4 days a week for 3-5 miles over time I'll add more miles and run more often. The 2 days I don't run I usually bike or elliptical for an hour and I strength train 3-4 days a week.

My dad thinks my way of eating is stupid because he is ALL ABOUT PROTEIN and he swears I'm not eating enough. He told me to use protein powder, but I feel like it's not needed especially if you're not working out very vigorously. I'll use what I ate yesterday as an example (below), I'm tryna prove him wrong, I believe I'm right did I eat enough protein, how much should I be consuming? thanks

Breakfast: 5 frozen bananas & a cup of peaches and kale blended

Lunch: Dates, Blueberries, Apricots (cup or so of each) and 20 dried fig *no added sugar in dried fruits btw*

    Snack: 2 bananas

Dinner:1 Chickpea ball, 1 plate full of roasted eggplant & plateful corn, tomatoes, celery, broccoli, romaine mixed together (my mom added a lil olive oil cooking the veggies so an extra 200or so cals >.<

  • as an accounting/finance major what would be a more beneficial class to take: extra economics or math courses?

My academic adviser is pretty much useless. My parents and my friends aren't too familiar with my field of study, so I've come to the Internet for advice.

I'm a junior business administration major with a double concentration in accounting/finance.

Next week I schedule my classes for the spring semester. I'm having a bit of a dilemma. Two classes for my major that I want to take I am unable to because I am also a collegiate athlete, and I have practice at those times and will with have to wait until the summer or fall semester to take those 2 courses.

All the other classes left that are relevant to my major I've either already taken or I don't meet the prerequisite to take yet because the class is mainly for seniors.

I don't wanna take a bs course that's irrelevant to my major. The only classes left that are available for me to take are either Economics of Genocide or Calculus I/Analytic Geometry(I guess it's both topics covered in one class). I have already taken the prerequisite course for both classes so I can take either one.

I'm not 100% sure what I want to do with my degree career wise once I graduate. I literally change my mind on what I want to do every day. One day I say I want to work in one of the Big 4 firms. Another day I say I want to be an actuary. And another day I say want to work in white collar crimes and be like a financial investigator. My mind is completely open. I'm still indecisive on whether I like accounting or finance better. I know for sure after I graduate, I'm planning on going to get my Master's degree. If I leaning more towards accounting I'll take the CPA Exam, if not I'll go the finance route.

Sadly, I haven't taken any internships yet pertaining to my field of interest. I was suppose to intern in the financial department at a law firm this past summer, but at the last minute they cut the internship program along with laying off many employees. Since I'll in season for track next semester, it'll be hard to intern as well, so I'll have to wait until the summer. I've applied to Merrill Lynch since they had a part time intern position opening in the spring, but if I'm qualified for the job, I may not be able to take it because of my hectic athletic schedule next semester. I was already turned down this semester by a local accounting firm near my school because of my hectic athletic/academic, but they would've given me the job. So my best bet is to market myself for summer 2014 internships.

Before I start going completely off topic would it be more beneficial to take the economics or calculus class next semester?

    Thanks :)

  • newbie to the whole vegetarian/vegan thing I just wanna know if I ate enough (quanitity and nutrient wise)?

I'm a division 1 athlete in college. Some days my school serves some nice vegetarian options other days there's nothing. I'm trying to covert into vegetarian/veganism (still weening off of seafood and some chicken products but I prob eat meat at most 3 days a week and it's only for one meal)

But today I didn't have any meat so I just wanna know if I ate enough quantity and quality wise since nutrition of importance for collegiate athletes. Since I'm late in the game of this realization, I'm starting to become more conscious of what I put into my body. Since I just started my preseason practices this week for track, throughout the season I'll take note of the positive changes in my athletic performance.

    But here's today:

-big Bowl of Special K cereal (about 2-3 cups worth) with berries in unsweetened soy milk

    -Watermelon slices

didn't get the chance to eat a proper lunch bc Wednesday is my busy day :/ but I had a small oatmeal parfait (oatmeal, strawberries, and a lil bit of granola) and when I came back to my room I had about a cup of raw almonds and seeds mixed together

-dinner I had 2 vegetable patties, some boiled asaparagus, and a small garden salad with balsamic vinegar dressing, and I added some lima beans

-craved something sweet so I had about 4 spoonfuls of PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and some soy milk and honey mixed together as a lil dessert

side note: on lifting days I usually make a protein fruit or green smoothie, but today we just did a running workout. tomorrow is a lift day.

anything I should try and change in my diet? I'll eat a real lunch tomorrow instead of a second breakfast. promise (usually I have some type of sandwich or wrap or a soup and salad and fruit)

  • I am just not getting full today. I am so hungry.?

I was extremely hungry today, but it was all fairly healthy foods.

I am working out a lot more since started my summer training for college track, I guess my appetite is catching up to me since I've increased my activity level a lot from June to July. now I strength train/condition for an hour in the morning, and I run a track workout or go on a long run/bike ride for my evening session...been doing these double session for about 2 weeks now.

Instant Oats mixed w/ almond butter and banana

    2 cups Fiber plus cereal

    an orange

Banana smoothie (2 bananas, almond milk, soy protein powder)

Cup of walnuts and raisins mixed together

Salad w/ raw broccoli, onions, vinaigrette dressing and chopped egg whites

    handful of triscuit crackers

2 bowls of soup (tomato based broth, lima beans, corn, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes)

4 spoonfuls almond butter and a mashed banana to make faux ice cream

    hot green tea

All my other beverages were water

    And I'm still hungry -____-

I'm gonna go chug down a gallon of water and force myself to bed bc this is ridic.

Weighed myself this morning for the first time in a about 2 weeks and lost 5lbs. Guessing this hunger pain is coming from working out so much and I must be getting my time of the month soon.

    Ever happen to anybody else????

  • is honey a natural laxative?

On a daily basis I eat oatmeal, cereal, fruits, so I do get a lot of fiber in my diet.

I always drink a cup of hot tea at night before I go to bed. About a week ago I started using honey in my tea instead of sugar. And literally every morning I'm on the toilet for a couple minutes if you know what I mean.....

Is honey like a natural laxative? I feel like everything I eat goes right through me

  • I workout a lot, but I also eat a lot. lose lose situation?

I workout a lot, but also eat a lot. It's all fairly healthy foods though (some of the food types I had today were: fruits, vegetables, fish, kashi cereal, oatmeal, almond milk, seeds, nuts, protein bars/powders, honey, green tea, and vinaigrette dressing for the salad I had) I just ate a lot of those foods bc today I was HUNGRY

My track coach is having us double up on some workouts for our summer training. Out of curiosity I calculated my intake and calories burned using the Fitness Pal App. I ate approx 3300cals and burned aprox 1100cals.

Is this a lose lose situation? I'm not trying to get husky muscular, since that's not helpful for a collegiate female jumper. I'm trying to get lean muscular.

***I don't double up on workouts everyday only like 3 days a week I double up. The other days are single hour long workouts or active recovery.

  • question about marley crochet braids?

I currently have senegalese twists in now, but for my next style I was really considering getting crochet braids. Normally I would wear straight weaves and leave parts of my hair out and have those parts permed so they are straight and blend in with the hair. My last perm was January; I decided I don't want to use perm anymore and be 100% natural. Crochet braids look like a really great protective hairstyle and it looks more natural. My only concern that is making it questionable whether or not to get this style is the sweat factor. I'm a Division 1 track athlete, and when I workout, I SWEAT A LOT. When I had a straight weave in I would just put a headband in my hair and tie my hair back so it's completely out of my face. I've never really seen anyone with updos, headbands and other accessories with this style. Is it possible to do all of that without exposing any braids underneath? And how much of my hair should if I were to get this style done?

    Thanks.

  • Fact or Myth? Do you really have to limit the about of carbs in your diet to get leaner, or is it just a fad?

I'm carrying too much extra weight, so I'm trying to get leaner. (I'm a high/long/triple jumper in track) I already have a planned workout regimen for the summer given by my coach. I'm just adding a lil extra cardio 2-3 days a week to start. I'll adjust based on progress (longer runs, bike, elliptical) and I lift 3 days a week and do plyometrics 1-2 days a week

    I'm 19 soon to be 20. female. 5'11.

This is what I ate today if you want to get an idear of what I like:

-cinnamon raisin english muffin w/ peanut butter on both halves it, apple and green tea (no sugar)

-salad with chopped egg whites and raspberry vinaigrette dressing

-smoothie: almond milk, banana, berries, baby spinach, and scoop of pea plant protein powder

    - handful raisins and raw almonds mixed together

-plate of three cheese tortellini and another plate of mixed vegetables (broccoli, carrots, peas, string beans)

-if I'm hungry again (which is highly likely) I'll most likely eat a piece of fruit or a handful of cereal w/ some tea

    -all other beverages of water.

other stuff I usually eat on the regular: oatmeal, kashi cereal (all types), rice and beans, yogurt, tofu, all fruit types, dried fruit(mango, pineapple, papaya, apricot) all types of nuts and seeds, cabbage and anything similar

I have the okay on my workout regimen, but I gotta work on the diet half to get the full effect.

yay or nay to my so called 'diet plan' ?

  • Did I get enough protein?

I live in a meat eating household and my dad thinks I don't get enough protein since that's his main concern for me since I'm not eating meat anymore this is what I ate today:

    -2 soy yogurts

    -2 apples

-smoothie (scoop of pea plant protein, cup of almond milk, banana, cup of strawberries and baby spinach)

-10 triscuit crackers. (I dipped one of them in my dads home made guac dip but I didn't like it)

-2 platefuls of seasoned cabbage (prob cooked in vegetable oil idk) and some roasted peppers were in it too

-about cup and a half or so of cous cous

prob snack on some more crackers or fruit if I'm hungry again

I'm an athlete so I'm pretty active prob get 30-60mins of exercise depending on the workout and lift 3 days a week. which is why my dad is concerned about me getting enough protein

  • How long to do you take a break in between seasons?

I'm a college track athlete. I specialize in the jumps. My trac season ended 3 weeks ago.

The first week and a half my only form of exercising (if any) was walking. When I came home after the semester I leisurely rode my bike around the neighborhood 3-4 times a week since I was bored and didn't want eat all the snacks in my house and get fat.

My school is getting new coaching staff for the 2013-2014 season (the head coach mainly works with mid distance/distance runners), but they haven't officially hired anyone yet. I'm not sure if I'm going to get any workouts this summer. I saved all my workouts from last summer to do. Today I did a 20 min run a little bit over 10 min mile pace. (kinda surprised myself I thought I'd be extremely out of shape). I'll prob run again on Wednesday.

Is 3 weeks good enough time off from working out? I'm not planning on doing any lifting or hard sprint workouts until mid/late June.

I go back to school August 20th. I'm not running cross country in the fall, but the sprinters and jumpers usually start practicing with the coaches around mid September to prepare for indoor.

I'm still curious to know how much rest you guys take inbetween spring track and summer training

  • trying to clean up my diet. how I'd do today?

I'm a college track athlete and STILL had terrible eating habits my frosh and soph year (I wasn't exactly eating unhealthy per se, I rarely drank alcohol but I just ate a lot of the wrong foods like sugary bars and starch, and borderline eating disorder tendencies like binge episodes, one large meal a day etc) Since I'm going to be 20 this summer and no longer a teenager, I'm taking the initiative to clean up my diet so 1. I don't have third consecutive up and down season and 2. I'm no longer a teenager so I'll probably starting wearing what I eat. (well actually I'm starting to notice it now. weighed myself and I gained a few pounds -_-)

I finished my soph season about 3 and a half weeks ago so I had some time off and today I started working out again with an easy 20 min run and some circuit exercises (standing squats, lunges, rocket jumps, back hypers, planks, crunches, pushups, dips)

This is what I had today:

-great grains protein blend cereal, no milk I only like dry cereal for some odd reason

-smoothie: unsweetened almond milk, cup of mixed berries, a banana, an apple

-slice of whole grain bread with a spoonful of skippy peanut butter on it and sliced up pieces of banana on top (I ate the rest of the banana pieces that didn't fit on the bread too)

-almased protein powder mixed with unsweetened almond milk

-small handful of raw pumpkin seeds

-baked tilapia w/ mixed steamed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots), and kale

Is this good for starters, any suggestions? (*dairy free suggestions though, only cow products I can eat without getting sick are egg whites, and sometimes yogurt)

thanks, I really appreciate it. really tryna change my lifestyle around for my junior and senior year
