El Greco was born in Candia which was the capital of Crete in 1541. His real name was Domenikis Theotokopoulos. The young artist was trained as an icon painter in the traditional byzantine style, but also studied under the guide of the artists Tintoretto, Veronese, and Jacopo Bassano. The evolution of his art is very impressive, following his movement from Crete, to Venice, Rome, and ultimately Toledo Spain.
