  • State sovereignty and self-determination.?

Since the treaty of westphalia we have had a strong definition of states as sovereign entities. They are considered to be powerful actors in international relations, but what are they.

It seems to me that there is nothing innate to states that makes self-determination apart of their existence. Furthermore, sovereignty seems to be just as unnecessary. To better explore this question we will need an understanding of the origins of the state. In a way this is a question about the origins of politics. Rousseau writes that politics was first created when a man declared a peice of land his, and then set down a course of actions that would protect what was "his." If we extrapolate this we can find some idea of where nations come from. A nation is formed by similar individuals--usually physically but I will not hold that necessary for a nation--protecting a territory then it evolves from there. So politics then has to course of actions it can take to keep its goal of protecting territory...

  • Single for three years and counting...?

I recently turned twenty and have found myself wondering why I'm single or at the very least why no one is interested in me.

I have long, dark hair, hazel eyes, im white, i'm 5'11" I weigh about 170 I work out 4-5 times a week. I am in a four-year university. I play drums, I can cook. I know damn near everything. I play sports, I do debate. I used to do improv for comedy troops, and have performed stand up so i think I am funny. I am confident without being cocky, in other words I know who I am. I also think I am very kind (I once walked an old lady home 10 blocks in the rain because she didnt't have an umbrella, unfortuantely my umbrella was not big enough for the both of us and I was soaked). umm.. I have good taste in clothing, I get compliments all the time on what I am wearing. I am ambitous and goal-oriented. I like art, philosophy, politics, reading the sunday paper. What more could a girl want?

  • Easier riddle?

This will be a far less confusing riddle.

You have 9 pennies. 1 of these pennies weighs less than the other eight; however, besides weight, the pennies are indistinguishable. You have to find out which one of these pennies is the one that weighs less than the others.

But your only weighing device is a balancing scale, so you will not get any numeric weights. Also you only get to use the scale twice.

Plan a way to discover which penny weighs less that will work every time and not rely on chance.

Note: Just weighing one penny against another leaves the chance that one of the other seven is the penny that weighs less. Therefore, it is unacceptable. You must plan a method that will allow you to discover which penny it is everytime.

  • Another riddle, I will let this one stay on here this time.?

Imagine there are 100 prisoners in a prison yard. The warden comes out, holding a lightbulb. He says to the prisoners, "you are all about to be placed into solitary confinement indefinetely. But I will let you all go if you can solve this riddle.

Here in my hand I have a lightbulb that you can turn off and on. You can turn it off and on as many times as you want, but you can do nothing else to the lightbulb. You may not break it, you make not paint it with anything. Each prisoner has the possibility of seeing the lightbulb once a day, but only once a day. Now I will let you all go free if at any time one of you can say that all prisoners have seen the lightbulb. However, if you do make the claim that all have seen it and you are wrong then I will kill all of you. Therefore, you only get one chance to answer."

Then all the prisoners are placed in solitary confinement, how will a prisoner be able to find out if everyone has seen the lightbulb?

  • Riddle for anyone interested.?

You have two ropes. Each rope takes one hour to burn. The ropes are not homogeneous, in other words if you cut the rope in half the two halves will not burn for a half hour each. Create a way to burn a rope for exactly 15 minutes. You can light the ropes as many times as you want and stop the fire as much as you want. But the ropes can only be light from the ends.

Hint: Cutting the ropes will only hurt you seeing as how you will know nothing.
