  • What was Jimmy Carter thinking?

In 1980, at the Democratic National Convention, Carter paid tribute to the late Senator and Vice President Hubert Horatio Humphrey, and referred to him (accidentally?) as "Hubert Horatio Hornblower." Did he ever give an explanation as to where the mistaken referece to the C.S. Forester character came from? Had he recently read one of the books, or scene the 1951 Gregory Peck movie in the White House theatre? Surely he did not deliberately misidentify the left's reigning hero at the time (and a native of his own VP's state of Minnesota) during a public appearance that had so much of his political future riding on his performace?

  • Will J.K. Rowling continue the Harry Potter series?

And if she does, what do you think the focus will be? Who will be the protagonist? The villain? The primary conflict?

  • Twilight Series--How can Edward father children but Rosalie can't get pregnant?

Just trying to put a new spin on a question that has been asked a lot in this forum. Another, related question--Is Stephanie Myers sexist, or is this whole thing some sort of neo-feminist statement against motherhood? Also, is she completely ignorant of male biology, since she obviously doesn't know that blood flow is necessary for men to experience erections or produce sperm? (By the way, men's bodies do change, just not as dramatically as women's. Bella alluded to Charlie Chaplin fathering a child in his seventies, but Chaplin obviously never had to deal with erectile disfunction or low sperm count.)

And no "It's just a fantasy" counterarguments, please. That's a copout, and a non-argument. Myers is the one who uses scientific "facts" and combines them with a fantasy storyline; i think she should be held accountable if she screw up the facts.

  • How old was The Fonz?

"Happy Day's" storyline began around 1955 or 1956; at that time, most of the central characters (Richie, Potsie, Ralph, in particular) were around 17 I think. Along comes Arthur Fonzarelli, mechanic, former gang member, high school dropout. There is an implicit recognition that he is quite a bit more experienced in the ways of the world then his friends, that he is probably some years older than they are. How much older, though? I don't believe Fonzie's true age is ever revealed, but I could be wrong.

  • What if Social Security were created today?

Would the liberals try to exclude those in the higher income brackets from participating as beneficiaries, while making them pay most of the costs?

  • What are the chances of a tie in the Electoral College this year?

FYI, if that happens, the choice between McCain and Obama goes to the House Of Representatives; that between Palin and Biden goes to the Senate. Can anyone imagine the possible senarios then? (I know what I think; I want to see what others think.)

  • Did giving women the vote lead to the advent of the welfare state?

I don't necessarily believe this myself, but I did hear this observation made recently, and would like some input.

  • Emails from the future?

Why do I get emails dated up to 30 years in the future sent to my bulk folder? I've got hundreds of them; I know that they're not really from the future (duh!), but I'm curious about the reason for the post-dating. Also, how often does this happen to others out there?

  • If an earthquake moves a house onto another property, whose house is it?

In the early 19th century, I read, this happened--in the kingdom of Naples, a man's house was transferred onto another man's property due to an earthquake; a higher court ruled that the house now belonged to the second property owner. How would this case be handled now, in particular in a U.S. court, but also in other jurisdictions? (Give sources.)

  • How did a labour-saving device save slavery?

I'm referring to the cotton gin. The predominate historical belief (which is correct) is that Eli Whitney's device made slavery profitable and ensured it's existence and growth for the next 80 years. Most technilogical innovations tend to have the opposite effect, however, reducing the number of individuals necessary for the effected labour (cotton production, in this case). What about this device resulted in the dramatic upsurge in the institution of slavery that occurred?

  • Barack Obama=Willie Stark?

I've just started reading Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men." Without knowing much about the novel, from reading the back-cover summary it seems that Warren's Stark bears a striking resemblance to Barack Obama--a young, idealistic populist pulled into a world in which he is clearly out of his depth, and transformed into a power-hungry demagogue. Again, I've only just started the book, but I wanted to know other's opinions on this.

  • Why doesn't Baby speak in the last part of Dirty dancing?

In the last 20 minutes or so of the movie, Baby is totally mute; her last lines are to Johnny when they're duting the goodbye scene, as Johnny is about to drive away. She doesn't even reply to her father's compliment on her dancing, just hugs him and goes back to the dance floor with Johnny. So what gives, that one of the co-stars of the movie just clams up during the climactic finale?

  • What happened to Baby and Johnny?

I mean the main characters on Dirty Dancing. The movie ends with their futures up in the air. It's all subjective, of course, but I wonder--Did they seperate after that summer and never meet again? Did they stay together and get married and have lots of little dirty dancers? Did Baby go on to Mt. Holyoke and the Peace Corps, or did she actually get a real job? What do you think?

  • What does the Sermon on the Mount say about gay marriage?

Just curious, based on what I read about Obama's speech. He apparently doesn't go into what he specifically means, and I could find nothing from other sources.

  • What would Reagan do?

I mean "really" do? So many reactionaries have raised Ronald Reagan to almost a godlike status that I wonder how many people really remember what he actually stood for. For instance, there there are things the current administration is doing that Reagan would have disapproved of, I think; further, I believe he would have profoundly disagreed with some of the things being said in his name. So I wonder, what in fact Reagan would do? (Conservatives and liberals may both feel free to answer this one.)

  • Who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007?

What I mean was, how many deserving nominees were passed over for Al Gore? The Nobel Committee, I understand, keeps the list of nominees secret, but surely one can find the list if one really wants to, or at least a partial list.

  • Who knows how Littleton Fowler died?

Littleton Fowler (1803-1846) was a Methodist minister who served as missionary to the Republic of Texas, 1837-1846. I know quite a bit about him because I'm doing my Master's thesis on his life and work. I have not, however, found any information on his cause of death, only that he died after a lingering illness. I know he was in ill health most of his life, and had suffered from malaria at least once. Anyone who can give more information, along with specific sources, gets the best answer.
