Just looking for something to kill the time. Not surprisingly this is also to procrastinate and put off my studies.

  • Did imperialism aid in the development of anthropology as a discipline?

For instance would pioneers in the field such as E.B. Tylor have had the impetus or even the access to study the cultures that he did without the growth of world empires?

  • Naming convention for fossil hominids?

I was just curious but how do archaeologists decide whether something belongs to one genus or another based on just a few pieces of bone and tools? Supposedly the difference between Australopithecus and Homo was the use of tools but how to explain Australopithecus Gahri which was found with possible tools?

  • Which PS2 rpgs have the original Japanese dialog with English text?

I'm hesitant to buy new games without knowing for sure. It's not that I feel the dialog HAS to be in Japanese, it's just the English voice actors all sound like their previous experience was with a kung-fu flick from the 70's.

  • Most violent or disturbing anime/manga?

I haven't been watching many new shows so my choices might be sorely out of date but Berserk!, Hellsing Ultimate, and Gantz are easily some of the more violent ones out ther. Gantz especially manages to give me the willies.

Any opinions on those particular shows? Got one that trumps them all?

  • What comicbook series has the most confusing plot?

I read most of Spawn, from issue 1 up to 175, it's not so much a plot as a bunch of pretty pictures that someone on massive amounts of LSD penned lines for.

Can anyone think of a series with a more incoherent plot? Manga is fine since furikuri was pretty out there too.

  • Is it wrong to vote against answers citing wikipedia?

I mostly post in the history section and whenever I see someone copy and pasted directely from a wiki article I immediately give it a thumbs down or vote for someone else. Am I silly for having such a strong aversion to it?

  • Was the so-called Emperor system utilized by the Meiji constitution truly unique?

The claim made by the Meiji oligarchs was that Japan's kokutai (polity) was defined by an unbroken line of emperors for over 2,000 years and was the basis of Japanese nationalism.

But was it really that unique? If you think about it in terms of European nationalism it was simply the particular aspect of Japanese culture they chose to run with, bushido or even Japanese aesthetics could have just as easily worked, right?

  • Was the Weimar republic doomed from the start?

Is this really a fair representation of the historical events though? Admitedly there were numerous factors contributing to its demise but had the world economic crisis of '29 not occurred would the Republic have necessarily given way to National Socialism?
