  • Can you modify a chip reader so that a system can still allow for chip cards to be swiped?

    I work at a small, locally-owned store, and considering that we accept EBT, I was thinking of getting them on board with accepting eWIC too, considering we have the hardware for it. However, the way things are set up right now is we have a card swiper attached to each POS, and then for EBT, we have a dial-up transmitter for every 2 registers (not connected to the POS computers) that we have to type the price in manually, and once the dial-up transaction is complete, manually ring out the order as EBT on the POS system. The dial-up system is comprised of the transmitter and a newer, detachable pin pad that can actually accept contactless payments (so we can technically accept contactless payments, but with the dial-up transmission, it is basically the most counterintuitive setup possible, so it is hardly used that way). What I am thinking is to take out the transmitters, connecting the pin pads that have the contactless payment and chip readers to the POSes (even if I need adapters), and then maybe the company that manages the POS software could change the functionality so that we could accept eWIC. However, us being able to swipe credit cards makes things go a lot faster because it takes about 2 seconds to process a card, if that. And I know if we have a chip reader attached, it would potentially render the swiper inoperable for chip cards. With that being said, I was wondering if there is some way I could modify the pin pad with the chip reader so that this wouldn't occur,

  • Which type of transistor suffers more from hysteresis, BJTs or MOSFETs?

    I'm in an Electronic Design class and we have a project where we need to create an audio amplifier using transistors. When the professor was explaining the project, someone asked if we would have to consider the hysteresis of the transistors. The professor said possibly, and he mentioned that one group in a previous year had an amplifier that could only be on for a very short period of time (enough to demonstrate the circuit and that's it) on account of hysteresis. I don't want to be in that position, but at the same time, I generally don't understand what makes one type of transistor more advantageous than the other (BJT vs. MOSFET). Therefore, if I could at least know which one of the two suffers more from hysteresis, I think I would be on the right track to avoid that problem.

  • Can a delay block be implemented with an op amp circuit, or are delay blocks a theoretical concept?

    I'm in a Control Systems class and I had to find the expression for a variable Va in the s-domain. When I solved for it, I (and everyone I've talked to) got Va to be non-causal, which was unable to give me a unit step response in matlab. The only way I can think of rectifying the situation is by using two delay blocks so that the denominator is of a higher degree than the numerator, but in our lab, we only have op amps and resistors at our disposal. However, I've only known of delay blocks as a theoretical concept (via Signals & Systems), so I don't even know if what I'm thinking is possible to begin with.

    If I design a system for marginal stability, in reality, will it behave like a underdamped, critically damped, or overdamped system?

    I'm an Electrical Engineering major in a Control Systems class. For our lab, we have a third-order RC circuit that we have to come up with a PID controller for. I used the Routh Hurwitz criterion to come up with relationships for the different gains Ki, Kp, and Kd. I set K = 1 so I don't have to use another op-amp. For marginal stability, I came to the conclusion that Ki = 0 and that Kd = 0.44Kp - 12.76. Plotting the unit step response of this idealization in matlab yields what I expected, evenly spaced oscillations of the same amplitude. However, when my group and I construct the circuit and run a unit step through the circuit, what would it behave like, considering the imperfections in the components we're using? And also, since for marginal stability Ki = 0, does that mean we could use a PD controller, rather than a PID controller?

  • Do colleges garner more in terms of notoriety, public money, etc if they award more degrees/certificates?

    I go to The University of Akron in Ohio and their admissions have been low as of recent. I was thinking of proposing the idea of modifications to the student accounts that let students see how much they have towards potential minors or other majors, in case people want to get double majors or minors that they may not have known about before. However, I don't know if the idea would be worth it if it didn't benefit The University of Akron. I would think that if they were known awarding more degrees/certificates (even if people have multiple ones), their admissions would go up. And if I am thinking correctly and The University of Akron didn't take the idea, would I have reason to be suspicious that they make bad advisement on the classes people are supposed to take for certain majors, that way they keep students longer and make more money off of them?

  • Are transformer circuit equivalents useful?

    I'm a 21 year-old Electrical Engineering student. I had a co-op this spring and when I was interviewed for it, my boss asked me if I could draw a transformer circuit equivalent. As far as I know, a transformer circuit equivalent takes a two-winding transformer and turns it into 1 loop with a inductance with an internal resistance (essentially). The only scenario I could see that being useful is if you want to turn a regular transformer circuit into an auto-transformer circuit, a transformer with one winding. So is that actually useful or not?

  • Is it wrong to find an older woman attractive?

    I'm 21 year-old guy. The woman in question is 49 (but she doesn't look 49, more like 35). She's married and I'm not a creep, so I'm not doing anything. It's just women in the millennial generation pretty much only care about receiving sex from guys who treat them like crap and/or abuse them. They're too vested into the hookup culture of college/high school, regardless of if they're pursuing getting laid or not (i.e. the ones not getting laid are jealous of the ones who are getting laid). I know women are supposed to grow out of that, but I think it's sort of crappy that good guys are supposed to just expect women to go through that period of time in their lives where they throw themselves at guys who treat them poorly and then just be there when they decide to come out of that phase. It's almost like women have more rights when it comes to general things in life in that respect because I'm told not to judge women on that.

  • Are external hard drives built to handle media (music, movies, tv shows, etc.)?

    I have a Seagate 4 TB external hard drive that I ve had since probably 2012 or 2013 (2014 at the latest). I can get through an hour of music on iTunes and then somehow, the connection between this hard drive and my computer gets screwed up. I m thinking I might be overusing the hard drive or using it for files that external hard drives can t handle a ton of, but what s the purpose having a 4 TB hard drive if you can t put music/tv on it? I don t think anyone has 4 TB of pictures.

  • Roughly what percentage of women falsely claim rape?

    My dad who's a former cop told me that women can claim rape and ruin a man's life, even if the accusation is false, which I believe him on that. However, there's a girl I've known since the end of 2015 that seems to be interested in me that I was going to go to a 3-day concert event with, but my dad isn't letting me because he said that all she has to say is "I didn't want to" and my life is over. Even before he told me that, I knew of the ramifications of having sex with someone who can't consent or doesn't consent. I had went to a party where this same girl was and she was drunk. Once the party ended and people were trying to go to sleep, she said "I wanna f someone" and I just got up and left, because I wasn't drunk and she was. I just want to know if my dad is being too irrational/overprotective here, mainly by having statistics to back up my side and what my friends who are older than me have experienced.

    Is there such a thing as a series, two-winding transformer?

    I'm a 21 year-old, Electrical Engineering student on a co-op right now. I'm typing an executive summary for an Excel document I've been working on. My boss told me that the document only handles calculations for parallel, two-winding transformers, and that there are differences in the calculations if the windings are in series, but I don't know if he was eluding to only three-winding transformers for the series calculations, because the concept of two windings in series doesn't make sense to me because all I've ever known to make sense for two-winding transformers is the configuration in image A. Image B has a configuration in series, but that has three windings with it, one on the primary and two on the secondary. Image C was something like what I did in Circuits 2, but I don't think it makes practical sense because there would be no hole in the core. Thanks.

    What voltage should an electric fence be set at for this situation and how do you set it up so the system can't be defeated?

    I'm a 21 year-old Electrical Engineering student. There's a cemetery where my dad was going to work that is completely trashed (ex. tombstones turned over/wrecked), mainly attributed to inner city youth jumping the fence and using it as a playground. I looked in the Ohio revised code to see if it's legal to have an electric fence and it is. The owners of this cemetery don't have much money, so I was thinking if they were to just get an electric fence energizer and make their fence electric, they won't have a problem. However, even with the old saying "volts hurt, current kills", you can't have the least amount of current possible with a petaohm resistance because I've read that high-voltage injuries can cause neurological problems for the victims, which could cause a legitimate legal battle on the victim's end, putting these cemetery owners who have limited funds into poverty pretty much. With that being said, I was wondering how much voltage would be enough to definitely send the message to these kids who basically lack human decency (trashing graves), but at the same time not give them complications of any kind that would land them in winning a court case. Also, I know that some electric fences, particularly on farms, can be defeated by grounding one of the wires with something as simple as a hair comb. So I imagine the fence like the one in the picture wouldn't be hard to defeat either. So how would I make it undefeatable? Thanks
