I have degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Studies, and Nuclear Engineering. I was an aerospace engineer. Now I'm a construction design engineer and project manager. I enjoy High Performance DE in my 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S coupe. Gone but not forgotten: my 1996 Porsche 911 coupe. My daily driver is a 1997 Subaru Outback wagon. Porsche and Subaru -- the best of both worlds.

  • What do you think of he brand new Porsche GT2 RS?

So ... finally, we have the new ZR1 and Viper-killer Porsche GT2. But ... it's still using the smaller 3.6 litre engine, while the also brand new 911 Turbo S has gone to the 3.8 litre that's been standard for years in the Carrera S and 4S.

The new (all wheel drive) Turbo S version of this engine turns out 530 HP and 516 lb-ft of torque. What do you think the GT2 RS does with it? The Turbo S weighs almost 3,500 pounds. What do you think the GT2 RS weighs?

You still get the GT2 RS with a Porsche six speed manual transmission, while the Turbo S comes only with the seven speed PDK auto. What else do you think 4.96 pounds/HP will kill? Keep in mind that all Porsches do better on a road course where their superior suspensions, brakes, and lower centers of gravity give them inherent advantages over all the competition.

  • What year Impreza, WRX, or STI should I buy?

I'm finally thinking of selling my 1997 Outback and getting a newer Subie. I don't need the bigger car anymore (I've got a 2008 Outback too.), and I'm attracted to the WRX and WRX STI machines. I know there are people on here who know more than me about them, so please, give me some help.

I prefer the older Impreza body to the current 'fastback' STI, but I'm not ruling the 2010 out. I can afford a brand new STI, if that's where I should go. I'd like to get a Certified Pre Owned vehicle (The Subie salesman tells me it has to have less than 80k miles and 7 years to be CPO), IF I don't buy new.

My needs: preferably as few miles as possible, say under 40k; a good sound system is important, and leather would be nice; I don't NEED 305 HP, but WANT more than 170. If the difference in torque from the 2.0 L to the 2.5 L engines makes a real difference, I probably want the 2.5. It seems I can get a turbocharged Inpreza without going WRX or STI; that's kind of confusing. Well?

  • Describe difference between water-cooled turbocharger, air-air turbo intercooler, water-air turbo intercooler?

The new Porsche 911 Turbo has a "water-cooled turbocharger" (http://www.porsche.com)./ Does this mean it employs a water-to-air intercooler (really an aftercooler) on that turbocharger as opposed to an air-to-air intercooler, or is it something else?

Is this something new, or have all 911 turbochargers (or intercoolers) been "water-cooled" since the type 996 911 with its water-cooled engine was introduced?

  • How is the Quality of Alfa Romeo Cars Today?

I recall the Alfas from the sixties, in particular the Spider Veloche of "Graduate" fame. It was still the era of carbureators and (generally) poor automobile craftsmanship around the world (Jaguars, for example, truly sucked). A friend's family had a Spider, bought brand new, and it was always in the shop. It had so little ground clearance (like today's Corvette) that taking it anywhere was a massive risk.

Alfa is coming back to the U.S. Does anyone have experience with modern Alfas? The old ones looked so wonderful; are the ones built today as good as they look?

  • How to increase air intake, beyond a simple K&N filter, for my Porsche 911 coupe (rear drive, non-turbo, 1996)

I'm at altitude (over 4000 feet). Before I lower backpressure, I figure I ought to increase, if possible, the air my engine is getting.
