How is the Quality of Alfa Romeo Cars Today?
I recall the Alfas from the sixties, in particular the Spider Veloche of "Graduate" fame. It was still the era of carbureators and (generally) poor automobile craftsmanship around the world (Jaguars, for example, truly sucked). A friend's family had a Spider, bought brand new, and it was always in the shop. It had so little ground clearance (like today's Corvette) that taking it anywhere was a massive risk.
Alfa is coming back to the U.S. Does anyone have experience with modern Alfas? The old ones looked so wonderful; are the ones built today as good as they look?
I could use some years for the various cars quoted. I was thinking I'd get answers from the U.S. Obviously, (tyres) I'm getting them from England as well.
Yeah, let me know where you're at, please.

The thing that people answer most of the times is that they are beautiful cars but they cost you a fortune in maintenance, they rust, use a lot of petrol and have a lot of electrical problems. That's entirely true.... about 25 years ago. I'll be completely honest with you about my history with alfa:
I've owned a couple of Alfa's now, first the Alfa 155 which wasn't the prettiest alfa but incredible in corners and very sporty stiff chassis, in the 4 years that I owned it it did came up with an electrical problem, somekind of exhaust probe, it kept on driving though, price of repair: 200 bucks . Then I bought a 147 which was a ltitle smaller but the interiour was AMAZING. The beautiful dashboard was, well, stunning, especially at night. A little bit more body roll, the 147 has lost some of the sportiness in comparison to the 155. You can see that they made some sacrifice to speak to a wider range of people. Still, it's a real alfa, good engine and some good old stubborn alfa-ness, like putting the numberplate on the left side of the car instead of in the middle like ALL other cars. It's something strange but you really get to love it. I did pay a normal amount of money on maintenance. Tyres, oil changes, and some other things you have to replace in ANY car after a certain amount of years. Then I got myself a '78 GTV which was older, different but very satisfying, amazing sound, doesn't get any better than the 2.0 alfa engine from those days.
Now I drive a GT which is the most "affordable" beautiful car you'll ever own, in my opinion. It has the 1.9 JTD diesel engine which really isn't bad! It puts out 160 HP, 180 or more if you have it chiptuned for about 200-300 bucks and because it's a diesel it has a big load of torque and a 6 speed manual gearbox. You need to shift gear a lot I have to admit but every time you hit that gaspedal you get catapulted forward, every single gearshift again, it's brilliant.
Every time I drive passed those mindless boring VW's or Ford's I put a smile on my face because I have an Alfa Romeo and I love driving it anywhere!! :)

From september 2007, I own an Alfa Romeo 159 2,4 JTDm Exclusive Sedan Q-Tronic. It's a wonderful car, fast, very funny to drive, comfortable, classy and really beautiful. The engine is a 5 cylinders, 2,4 liters, turbodiesel, common rail direct injection, 210 hp, 400 Nm at 1500 rpm, which is very performant both on highways than on local roads and in the city: the maximum speed is 230 kmh and the accelleration time 0-100 kmh is 8,2 seconds. It reaches 37.6 miles per gallon average. In option, you can have 4 wheel drive. It's one of the safest cars of its category, with frontal, side, window and knee airbags, ESP, EBD, ABS, Hill Holder, anti-whiplash seats and Traction Control, all standard equipment. The Euro-NCAP car safety test was passed with the the maximum scoring of 5 stars on 5 and 4 on 5 for children safety. The transmission is 6-gear manual, but I choose the automatic 6-gear Q-Tronic (optional, 1000 euros), which is much more comfortable. On my car there is the Blue & Me Infotainment system (optional, 300 euros), developed by Microsoft, which allow to use a USB 2.0 port for iPod or notebooks. As standard equipment, there is also the diesel particulate filter. Here in Italy the warranty is 5 years long without limitations. Consider also that the car has been awarded in a lot of european nations for its design and in Germany (!) it was declared "Best Imported Car" in 2007 by the rewiew "Auto, Motor und Sport". I'm very happy of my Alfa and surely I would buy it again, so don't listen to the voice of other people who drive stupid and expensive german cars and buy the Alfa: you'll won't regret!!

Alfas today are still gorgeous, but sadly from what I've heard and read, they will not last long.
