  • Equine calming supplements...?

My Connemara/Arab gelding injured his suspensory ligament and is on restricted exercise (for now, walking only-no turnout) for the next several months. When I was walking him today (riding bareback in good arena footing, with permission from vet), out of the blue he reared up pretty high, and started prancing and such. Fortunately, neither of us were hurt, but it made me realize that for both our safety, I need to do something to take the edge off, just until he's allowed to have more exercise. I've been doing some reading on calming supplements, and wanted to hear some more opinions and testimonies before I order anything. I've heard valerian dopes them out, and I don't really want to get him stoned- just in a more relaxed state of mind.

Any had any experience with RelaxForm EQ or smarkpak's SmartCalm? If so, do you think they'd be right for my situation?

I'm not really worried about drug testing, I only compete at local schooling-type shows where they don't test, and I won't be doing any of those for a while, obviously, but I want to make sure whatever I end up using is safe and won't cause liver damage by being used on a daily basis.
