  • Is this green card through employment contract valid?

In 2011 I signed a contract that I will owe my employer the costs they incurred to sponsor my green card up to $9000 if I leave within 2 years of receiving it. The contract states I will be billed and then submit the bills for reimbursement. Since the lawyer is the company's lawyer, I never received any bills, so I got really worried that they are charging random things towards that and requested an itemization of their expenses. It turns out they charged me $2000 billed in 2010, i.e. 1 year before I signed the contract for some lawyer fees. I addressed this with HR but they did not do anything about, i.e. the charge is still part of this.

It took them one year to get the process rolling and it has been almost another year and still no green card. Over the last two years I realized that there is no career growth for me at this place. I am 30, very highly educated (two bachelors, two masters degrees), I am currently working on an additional professional certification as well. It pretty much kills me that they have lied to me and I am stuck here for two more years. I checked on the Department of Labor web-site the otehr day and found out that such contracts are not even allowed according to some rule from 2007!!!

Has anyone been in a similar situation or know if whatever I read really invalidates this contract? I am so stressed over this as they lied to me when I signed it and obviously continued lying afterwards. Honestly, at this point I don't care about the green card, if I could sell my house, I would leave the country and never have to deal with them again! Please help!

  • How were you informed you have diabetes?

I was kind of dumb-founded I got informed over the phone and I have not seen my doctor since and I only deal with the nurses calling me and giving me instructions what to do... Is this normal or should I look for a different doctor?

  • Career Question... please read?

Ok, I have a full-time job and I am doing an MBA (my second masters). My employer wants to sponsor my green card but they want me to stay and work for them for 2 years after it is approved, or I owe them money (I can leave for serious illness, disability or death in my immediate family and not owe them anything - I do have my dad on disability, so I can leave any time I decide to go back to Europe). I know I am underpaid since I make less than the average for my position. They told me I will not get promoted while the green card is in process, even though I am long overdue for a promotion. Should I take their offer to sponsor it? Even though that means a complete stop in my career, i.e. no promotion after four years of working for them (for as long as the green card is not approved)? What would you do? I just don't see any space for career growth with them as people just got promoted into all the management positions in my department and are not going to leave any time soon. I want to move my career forward and I do like the US and want to stay long-term, I am just not imagining myself with this company for the long-term, due to lack of career growth potential.
