I love all animals and at one time or another have owned most types (though no farm animals except horses). I have 17 years experience with horses, mostly dressage and hunt seat, though I've done a little western. Fishkeeping is my current hobby and I advocate humane treatment of all creatures, including fish. Please don't put goldfish in a bowl, or an oscar in a 10 gallon...it's just not right. I currently have a 55 gallon african cichlid tank, a 29 gallon low/mid light planted tank, a 20 gallon tropical community tank, and a 10 gallon QT tank (currently houses a betta). I've been involved in dog agility and training for 3 years. I also have a cat.

  • Need stocking help for a 10 gallon aquarium?

I need stocking help with a 10 gallon aquarium. I want something different, I already have two tropical community tanks and an african cichlid tank. It will be the permenant habitat for whatever I put in there so please do not suggest fish unsuitable for 10 gallons.

Fish I DON'T want (already have) are platies, guppies, mollies, common tetra species, common danios, gouramis, bettas, pretty much anything you can buy at a chain pet store. I'm willing to try brackish if there are any suitable brackish fish for a 10 gallon. My water is naturally soft with a neutral pH, but I can harden it if necessary. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Frost warning this weekend...how do I protect my garden?

The temp is supposed to drop to near freezing this weekend, how do I protect my garden? It's been in the 70's and 80's since Feb here, so I planted my garden thinking it would be safe. I have 2 tomato plants, 2 pepper plants, some herbs, and a bunch of green bean plants. It's only going to be bad Sat and Sunday, and not a real hard freeze, lows are supposed to be about 32. Can I just throw a plastic drop cloth (thin plastic) over the plants? Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Are there any harmful effects from chewing food but not swallowing it?

I need to lose weight and have a problem with binge type eating late at night. I know there are tons of health problems with becoming bulemic and I do not want to go that route. Recently I've started chewing my "binge food" but spitting it out and not swallowing it. I do eat normal healthy meals, but if I'm craving McDonalds or pizza or cookies I do this. Are there any negative health implications to this behavior? If so, what are they? I know it sounds gross, but I feel better after doing it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Who to start at RB...Chris Perry or Ahman Green?

Ok, Reggie Bush has a bye week, so I need to figure out who to start. My other RB is LT, so he's a definate starter. Ahman Green (GB) vs Miami or Chris Perry (Bengals) vs. Carolina.

Perry has been on the IR list, but was just activated today, so I picked him up. The Bengals website is saying he should play, possibly playing WR and RB. He's an explosive runner and may be able to penetrate the Carolina defense. Obviously, I'm a Bengals fan.

I don't know much about Ahman Green, but he doesn't seem to have done too much. What do you football gurus think?

  • Is the vestibular ganglia located in the CNS or PNS?

Is the vestibular ganglia located in the CNS or in the PNS?

Today in my nervous systems class we were talking about the cranial nerves. My professor said that only ANS nerves have ganglia in the PNS, and all sensory and somatic motor nerves synapse within the CNS. When we were looking at the vestibulcochlear nerve (cranial nerve 9) I noticed in the diagram the vestibular ganglia appeared to be in the PNS, but since this is a sensory only nerve, the ganglia should be in the CNS. I asked my professor about it after class, and he said it was a good question and that I should research it. I was wondering if anyone here has taken a neurobiology class and can help me out. Thanks in advance.
