  • What is wrong with kids today...and what is wrong with kids thousands of years ago?

These quotes look like any adult today could have said them about how the world is going to the dogs. However. they're actually

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of

today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for

parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as

if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is

foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest

and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."

-Peter the Hermit, 13th Century AD

"The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for

authority, they show disrespect to their elders.... They no longer

rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents,

chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their

legs, and are tyrants over their teachers."

    -Socrates, 5th century BC

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders,

they disobey their parents. They ignore the law.

They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions.

Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

    -Plato,5th century BC

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on

frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond

words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and

respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise

    [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint"

    -Hesiod, 8th century BC

As you can see, complaining about "kids these days" has been goin on for quite some time now, and being convinced that the world is going to the dogs or to hell in a handbasket has also been going for some time now.

As these quotes show, every generation is convinced the one succeeding it is just not as good in some way but is really the result of viewing the world through a nostalgia filter and the past through rose colored glasses, and we will do the same with our kids and grandkids.

  • What do you think about these quotes about "bad kids today" from thousands of years ago?

I found these online, and they sound like anybody's parents or grandparents today could have said them about "kids these days", and how the world is going to the dogs, but they're actually from ancient history.

I think these just show that the whole idea of a previous generation thinking a newer one is going to cause the downfall of society that they had it tougher or were smarter and morally superior than the newer one is something that's been going on since civilization began and will continue to happen in the future. It doesn't matter how good or bad the succeeding generation is, the preceding one will always view them in a less favorable light, and we'll end up doing the same with our kids and grand kids.

  • Have any Marine recruits ever succeeded in going awol from Parris Island?

I'm just curious. I know that the whole thing about Parris Island is it's just that, an island, with only one bridge to the mainland, and the waters surrounding it have crocodiles, so it's extremely difficult for recruits going through boot camp to go awol.

Some Marines I've known told me stories about people who tried to go awol by taking a boat, but by the time they got to the other side their drill instructors were waiting for them.

So has anyone actually pulled it off?

  • To teach junior high do you need to minor in secondary education or primary education?

I'm interested in teaching history in either junior high or high school. For high school you need a minor in secondary education, but does secondary education include junior high, or would I need a minor in primary education?

  • Army IRR, how much time in between reporting to the in processing place and reporting to the unit?

I was on army IRR and got called back. All IRR soldiers are supposed to report to Ft, Jackson for a few weeks, then they get assigned to a unit somewhere.

I'm just wondering how long you get in between finishing up at Ft. Jackson and having to report to the unit?

  • What can musicians do commercially without being considered sell outs?

I'm just wondering at what point a popular musician is regarded as a sell out.

For example, there's Metallica who was accused of selling out because they originally stated they would never do a video, a ballad, or a compilation album, all of which they later did. They also changed their style to make it more radio friendly.

Then there's Kurt Cobain and the controversy over Guitar Hero 5. However, on the video issue, Cobain did videos while he was alive, so he obviously didn't consider them to be selling out.

There's also Led Zeppelin. who's notorious for refusing to let their songs be licensed, but even they've made a few exceptions and allowed their music in a couple of movies.

  • In Army IRR, how does being called back to active duty work?

I have a friend who was in the Army and got out and was on IRR. He just got orders to be called back. He's okay with going back in, but he's not sure of what to expect.

Anyone who's done it and knows?

  • Is government healthcare really as a) terrible as the right claims or b) as wonderful as the left claims?

Or is it somewhere in between?

I keep hearing different stories and claims about this.

Is it really as simple as we pay more taxes and we all get guaranteed health coverage?

Or does it set up to much bureacracy and make it too difficult for people to get coverage?

I have relatives in England, and they seem to think it's good, but I've also heard the stories about people from Canada coming here because it's so bad there.

    So what's the deal?

  • Is it possible for caffeine pills to make you horny? (Seriously)?

Sorry if this seems odd, but a while back I switched to caffeine pills because I figured they were healthier than sucking down a ton of soda and coffee.

I've noticed that on the days I take them, all through the day I find myself horny. They don't give me an erection, but I just can't stop thinking about sex.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Or is it really more of a symbolic position?

  • I'm in Army IRR, and I've been reactivated and want to know how it works?

I'm in the Army IRR and just got orders to be reactivated. I'm okay with going back in, but I'm just unsure of how the reactivation process works.

I got orders to report to South Carolina, which is where I went to basic training, but it didn't specify the same post, for a period of no more than 25 days for a medical screening, and then I'm supposed to report to a Reserve of Guard unit (it doesn't say which) in Texas.

What exactly will I be doing in South Carolina? Will I be in the same place I went to basic at? Am I "in" the army at that point, or is that not until I report to the actual unit?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Problem with my Xbox 360, no red ring of death but not playing games or DVD's?

So my 360 was working fine and all of a sudden it wasn't. The menu still comes up, but when I put a game or a DVD in, it only reads "Open Tray".

Anyway to fix it or do I need to send it in?
