  • Can I be sued for my deceased Father's back property taxes?

My father passed away in 2004 and my sister and I were his only other living relatives. We didn’t know much about his personal finances. He apparently owned the trailer he lived in and the land it sat on. He didn’t have a will and we didn’t really know what else to do with his property other than to just leave it be. Both my sister and I just walked away from all his property and didn’t do or “claim” anything after he passed. Here we are 9 years later and we were both just served papers saying we are getting sued (as his heir’s) for back taxes he owes on the property. Can they really sue us when we had nothing to do with his property and we didn’t claim any money or inheritance after he passed?

    We live in Texas.
