Hi, I am a Special Olympics athlete doing bowling and swimming. I can answer most questions about Special Olympics. I've been an athlete for over 20 years. I am a volunteer too. If you have any questions about Special Olympics, email me. I would like others to learn more about intellectual disabilities. To know that we are all the same in Gods eyes know matter who we are. People with intellectual disabilities are slow. Some much slower then others, but we are just like you. http://www.specialolympics.org
Hoping to get on SSDI wile trying to find another job?
This is from my mom because I do not understand the whole deal. I need Health Insurance now for cheap. Yes I can work 40 hours but with my disability its hard to find something I can do. And, their is much I can do. Working at Target is fine and all but I get mixed up to easily. Email me if you need to know more please.
Our story (briefly): Our 35-year old daughter (J) has worked at Super Target in Lafayette IN for over 10 years now and has had health benefits/insurance through her employment there. This has been great for her! J spent her primary and secondary school years in Special Education classes (MMIH back then) in the West Lafayette & Lafayette School corporations with IEPs all those years and graduated with a diploma from Lafayette Jefferson H.S. in 1996. She is higher functioning thus capable of lots! However, Target has been giving her fewer and fewer work hours that now these hours are under the average of 20 hours/week over a year's time -- SO, as of April 1, 2012 J has NO health benefits/insurance coverage at all!
J has been searching for other employment that might hopefully have benefits coverage for her. BUT even with her higher functioning capabilities, her disabilities are enough to keep her from finding gainful employment as such. She was once denied SSDI coverage (in 2011 - did not appeal at that time - as they stress she is capable of working). We recently started working with Vocational Rehabilitation and need to continue that process. Any additional suggestions would be most welcome! Thank you so much for your time.
Currently J continues to live at home. She has IRAs etc. so does not qualify for 'spend downs'. NO other assistance what-so-ever! She has been pretty independent except for continuing to live at home. She is a Special Olympics athlete, has been on The ARC's board of directors, participates in Best Buddies and generally keeps pretty busy otherwise. We just need to find a way to have medical coverage/insurance for her! My husband & I have it in our wills for a trust to be set up for her after our departures for her living expenses. This trust is not connected to The ARC at all.
J is employed - just doesn't have insurance coverage due to the fewer hours scheduled to work! She has an IRA (investments savings, etc.) so have not thought she would qualify for Medicaid. We may definitely try SSDI again one day soon. She is working with Vocational Rehabilitation (Voc Rehab) currently and we are going from there. J also had heard about CARS -- http://cars-services.org/wp/employment-s%E2%80%A6 # -- so may look into that!?! Thanks for your time. It's been great to make an additional connection in this matter.

3 AnswersLaw & Legal9 years agogetting zip drive files transfered to a CD?
I don't know where to start transferring files from a zip drive to a CD. I have the zip drive but I need something for the USB port. Or, should I take it to a computer store? Do I need special software? I want to get files from 14 years ago.
I thought up a book "Just Like You" for others to read about people like me with intellectual disability. I am just below LD. Which makes me both.

6 AnswersSwimming & Diving1 decade agoIs there a swim coach I can get for free in Lafayette, IN?
I want to train for the Paralympics in 2012 if the Time Trails are in Indianapolis, IN. I’m in Special Olympics Swimming. I manly swim for fitness and computation. I also am in (Untied States) Masters Swimming. I can go to more meets then in Special Olympics. I have tried out for the 1996 and 2000 Paralympics in Swimming. Only the best get to go, like the Olympics. I would like to try out again. I don’t want to spend the money to be on a swim team again. It was fun when I was little. I stopped when I was 20. I was swimming with all the 8 year olds. I just though I might ask. If you have anything at all that can help me, email me also.
