  • Help with character names? Something kinda hippy?

I have a story character who has yet to be given a successful name. I collect names up the wazoo and haven't found one that really works.

The story takes place in the mid-1970s. She is a very sweet girl, she's the spirit of optimism and friendly to everyone she meets. She's very well liked, and is a bit of a goody two shoes. She has blonde hair and golden hazel eyes.

I'm feeling an L last name, like Lane or Locke. And something kinda hippy-ish for a name, since its the 70s. Here are some ideas that I feel are going in the right direction:

    Heidi

    Daphne

    Felicity

    Wendy

    Tawny

    Winnie

    Hattie

I think something soft like her will really be perfect. Please suggest first and middle names, if you could. Thank you!

  • Word Names Help? Unique, fun, kinda hippy? For story character?

The character's name is Valentine Gray. I think giving her something unusual, a unique word name for a middle name would be the perfect choice for her. This story takes place in the mid 1970s; so I thought it would be funny to have her have super hippy parents that gave her a formal first name and some crazy middle one, lol.

She is short, with dark curly/wavy hair. She has bright turquoise eyes, and blue-toned pink lips. She is outgoing, open, and friendly. She gives everyone a chance, maybe one too many, and is stubborn to boot. She can be very opinionated and independent but relies a lot on her loved ones.

Ideas I have are as follows:

    Valentine Symphony

    Valentine Cameo

    Valentine Truth

    Valentine Minuette

    Valentine Solstice

    Valentine Starling

    Valentine Aurora

Please vote for one of those, and then feel free suggest any of your own. I'm not necessarily looking for just stereotypical hippy names or just nature names. Thank you!

  • Have you ever considered a pen name?

I remember one summer when I was younger, my sister, my brother and I decided we'd come up with pen names. I don't even remember what I'd come up with now...something with Wren or Robin in it.

Now that I'm older I don't think I've thought of actually making a new one or even using one. Would you ever use one? Or made one up for fun? Did you follow a method? I'm just very curious. I've seen people rearrange the letters of their names for one, create new names using their initials, or just gone completely out there and made something new.

My initials are E.A.D.B (I have two middle names) so the initials method is hard for me. Do I do a first name, two initials, last name? Two initials, one name, last name? Like...it's hard when you have an extra letter in there lol. And the only good name that I can form out of my name is rearranging EMILY into MILEY which...is an alright name.

Just leave anything, I'm just curious.

  • "Dark"/"Exotic" sounding girls names starting with D?

I have been looking for a D name for a character for quite some time. I really like the sound of Dimitria. Other names that I think are similar to what I'm looking for are Danika and Desdemona.

She's a gypsy girl with raven wavy curls rolling down her back to her waist. She has glowing green eyes with bright flecks of amber floating within. She has a graceful build and is of average height. She is very playful and highly inquisitive. She loves to laugh and dance. She's in her midteens.

Thank you for any and all answers!

  • Double Barrel first names? Opinions and Ideas?

I enjoy names; you can probably call me a collector of names and my opinions constantly change. Among all of the research I do when finding names, I come across and learn about the latest naming trends. I just came across something that I haven't seen in awhile or considered in awhile and that's double barrel first names.

I get there are some very "hick" combinations out there (i.e. Billy Bob, Daisy Jo, Mary Lou, Sue Ann, etc). I also think some people think they're trashy anyway despite the name choice because they don't know what name to use.

To me, if you don't choose incredibly long names you can pull off a double barrel name. I also think that it's obvious the double barrel name was given so you use both names, not one or the other, and that you really can't be that confused about it. If that person chooses to go just by one, they'll let you know, you're not the one that chooses. I'm not necessarily one to go out and make plans for a double barrel name for any future children; I'd go for two middle names before I go for a double barrel first name.

The most popular names have changed and so I wonder what names make for cute double barrel names. So feel free to leave your opinions on double barrel names and some of your ideas of double barrel names. Include some of your favorite "classic" ones too (i.e. Mary Ellen, Mary (etc), John Paul, John (etc), Rosa Lee or Rose Marie, etc).

    Thanks for answering!

  • Middle names for Valentine? Story Character?

My main character is named Valentine Gray, however she has no middle name. I originally put Gemma in that slot but Valentine Gemma Gray just doesn't flow. I want something kind of grand sounding, maybe noble, kind of royal. She's not, she's just a schools student.

She has very long bold wavy slightly curly hair. It's very voluminous and shiny. It's very dark brown almost black; think Kim Kardashian's hair. Her eyes are aquamarine; there's a ring of bright turquoise blue, then a ring of bright apple green and another ring of bright turquoise blue to compose the overall bright effect.

She's a very bright girl, she likes being in charge and taking leadership. She doesn't always think before she speaks, which gets her into tight places sometimes. She's very smart, but still has her struggles when it comes to school.

  • Middle names for Elina? Story Character?

I have decided on the name Elina Locke for a story character. Even if its never mentioned within the story I like to know/have a full name for every character, I think it's an important aspect of character development. I'm open to any kind of name, though preferably not anything too incredibly trendy. I don't want names like Mikayla, Paisley, Paige, etc. They're not my style and don't really fit my character anyway.

In case you're curious, she is a quiet but well liked girl. She's is hard working but not overly ambitious. She wants to work in the medical field after school. She's very soft and gentle and loving.

    Thank you in advance :)

  • Match one of these names to a character description for my story?

There are four characters, but I have a name for one of them so included is the remaining three character descriptions. I'm including only names for first names, but if you want to make a full name out of them go right ahead.

    First, the names:

Delaney, Diana (dee-anna), Devorah, Davina, Davinda, Desi, Cassandra, Cora, Callie, Eden, Gianna, Gia, Ardin, Isadora, Theodora, Cecelia, Valentine/Valentina, Everleigh, Juliet/Juliette, Noelie, Callista, Cadance, Faye, Melanie, Orianna, Samantha, Taryn, Winnie, Netta, Lisette, Eve, Collie (co-lee), Vera, Felicity, Aileen, Iris, Chastity, Calliope, Anastasia, Ariadne

    Second, Character Descriptions

    Girl One (Protagonist)

    --long, luxurious, glossy brown hair

--voluminous, kinda wavy kinda curly (think Kim Kardashian)

    --aquamarine eyes

--around the iris is a beautiful green color, ringed by a bright turquoise the edge of her eye is ringed in a thing circle of dark gray

    Girl Two

    Has a name already!

    Girl 3

    --think 1940s movie star hair

    --brilliant brunette

--mostly straight but wavy towards the bottom where it curls a little

    --classic eyes

--starting at the iris they're a bright blue ring with a thin ring of bright green and then another ring of blue

    Girl 4

    --long straight cut bangs

--her hair is feathered and layered around her face

--her hair color is various shades of blonde

--she has steel gray eyes, ringed on their edges by a thing ring of black

Feel free to use any name on any character or suggest your own! I'm looking for something unique, pretty, maybe even old fashioned, and classic. I'm having the hardest time finding names for these characters; and that never happens to me! It's very frustrating.

  • Edit this passage from my story?

This is the opening three paragraphs from a story that I haven't revisited in awhile. The passage just feels off to me, like its almost reached what I want it to. I just want there to be an overall feeling of confusion and an undertone of seriousness and possible danger. Like since she walked away, based off what just happened, she could be walking into danger without knowing it.

It's had no editing since it was written. Feel free to critique anything, change anything or offer any sort of advice you'd like.

    Here's the passage:

They say good-byes are hard. I say any good-bye is hard. We can become so close with another living and breathing human being there is hardly a memory of how it came to be that way. So well we know them that they just become a part of us, a center we didn't know we had. A center that makes us crumble when it's taken away from us. Gone is our center, no matter the time span, its gone. We aren't whole. We're missing them, even when we don't realize it. Sometimes the difficulty of a good-bye hardly registers; an easy pass-off. Maybe we just haven't realized the impact in our lives they've had, or the good-bye was for them and not for us.

Come looking for me, and you’ll find me on a train platform walking away from a good-bye. I wandered through the crowd, making my way towards the train through the random openings between people. Progress was slow, but I was ok with it. All I could think about was the lingering good-bye I just had with my parents. The serious tones and finality of the requests they made had only served to confuse me. I felt that I made promises to them not knowing what I was promising.

I climbed onto the train near its dark scarlet head, still lost in thought. As I passed through the front part of the corridor I was snapped from thought at the sound of the train’s whistle. I snapped my head sharply to the right and saw out the window in the first compartment I was next to. Almost immediately I found my mother and father standing close by, tucked into each others arms. As the train gave another call, I watched my father wipe a tear from her eye and speak something into her ear. She nodded and smiled and wiped the tear from her eye. As if they knew exactly where I was their eyes found me standing near the window. The train gave its final whistle and I moved quickly to be in front of the window, to wave back to my parents. It seemed like no time at all before the train was out of the station and I couldn’t see them any more. Not knowing what to do I stayed in front of the window, my arm still stuck in the last wave.

    Thank you!

  • What would you name these character based off physical descriptions?

There are four girls, they all need names. Well. Except the second girl; she's named Lily but I really need a middle name for her. And before you say it, I know she sounds like Lily Evans from Harry Potter, I just like red hair and green eyes together.

I love unique names, and classic sounding names. I want full names; preferably first middle and last. But the last name is optional, I just get stuck when it comes to last names.

I have tried I think three times to rename these characters and have yet to get it right. But on to the character descriptions:

    Girl One (Protagonist)

    --long, luxurious, glossy brown hair

--voluminous, kinda wavy kinda curly (think Kim Kardashian)

    --aquamarine eyes

--around the iris is a beautiful green color, ringed by a bright turquoise the edge of her eye is ringed in a thing circle of dark gray

    Girl Two (Lily)

    --long wavy red hair

    --voluminous, natural waves

    --choppy side swept bangs

    --vibrant green eyes

--bright emerald green (not forest, not sea glass, not sea green)

Originally going down the list in order they were named Zandra, Lily, Allie and Alaya. Then I changed it and then changed it again to Wren, Lily, Vivica, and Aryn. But I hate those names too. I love the name Lily and its the only one not changing...though it might if I can't find a middle name to go with it.

Thanks for any help! Offer as many names as you like!

  • Writing about good-byes? Passage and details included?

I found something I had written a while back. I had completely forgotten but once I read it I remembered how I had struggled to get my feelings across in the passage. I want a sense of confusion to come from this good-bye; I want there to be a sense of finality and seriousness with an undertone of fear. But also want that to be kind of masked, like portraying this as undertones to the good bye, I don't want it to say directly "They were scared as they said they're good bye and it confused me" lol.

    The questions are:

    1. How does it sound? How's the flow of it?

    2. If you could edit anything, what would you edit and change?

    3. How would you write this good bye?

    4. Add any other advice or whatnot.

You can answer all or one of the questions, or even give a sentence answer for each.

    Here's the story:

They say good-byes are hard. I say any good-bye is hard. We can become so close with another living and breathing human being there is hardly a memory of how it came to be that way. • Writing about good-byes? Passage and details included?

I'm attempting to write the opening of a story that speaks about what good-byes make you feel. Sometimes they're easy, casual. You can just turn around. Other times you're fine right up until those moments when you actually have to speak those two words and suddenly you get that choking feeling in your throat. Sometimes you say good bye and its easy but as you watch them leave, or leave yourself it just hits you hard or its suddenly hard to be walking away. Sometimes people say things to you that in that moment are out of context (i.e. a warning) and you're just wondering if you should be leaving in the first place.

I'll include what I've written--and trust me, I know it's god awful. It's something I wrote a long time ago and only just recently found and decided to come back to so its had no editing since the day I wrote it. For a little background, she's going off to school and times around the country and the world are tense (not necessarily WW2 but you know that kind of scary tension) and her parents are kind of feeling that she won't be safe without them, so they make her promise things like not going alone anywhere, and writing them every week even though this isn't the first time she's left them.

They say good-byes are hard. I say any good-bye is hard. We can become so close with another living and breathing human being there is hardly a memory of how it came to be that way. • Help with Simplicity Pattern 2133 Cutting Layout?

Its a pattern for a robe. I've used patterns before, and I understand most everything on the directions sheet. They have two layouts for 44" to 45" fabric. The first is for sizes XS, S, M and the second is for sizes L and XL. I understand the whole wrong sides of the fabric together match up the salvage edges and then place your pieces where they are according to the pictures.

However, I'm making an size XS. And it has two layouts; one has four pieces on it, one has the remaining four. The first one is the traditional one, selvage edges on the top and the fold on the bottom and it looks like a long rectangle. The second picture is what confuses me. It says double thickness and it says selvage on the top and bottom and it looks like two separate pieces. Under the definition for double thickness and under special cutting notes it says

    3. Mark small arrows along both selvages indicating direction of nap or design. Fold fabric crosswise with RIGHT sides together and cut along the fold.

    4. Turn one fabric layer around so arrows on both layers go in the same direction. Place RIGHT sides together.

I'm not positive on finding the nap and being able to fold it crosswise.

Also, I know when I bought the fabric I knew its "size" 44" 44" or 60" and I remember that while it's folded in half and you measure it you can figure out its size. I bought the fabric so long ago I don't remember its size. Any way you can figure that out again? Does the measuring thing work?

    Thank you for any help!
