Male I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I know lots of things.

  • a squared minus ab minus b squared?

Okay, so I was thinking about win ratios one day, and thought to myself "what win to loss ratio would be equal to that of games played to win ratio (assuming no ties). I did some estimates and it seemed that it wouldn't be hard to find the exact number, since it seems around 1.62 is quite close.

When I decided to write the algebra though, I came across a problem.

    (W+L)/W=W/L (find W/L)

would result in A^2 - AB - B^2=0, which isn't easy to deal with. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here (even if I substitute a variable with a value). I did some pretty advanced maths in school, but I forgot a lot of it.

I'm just curious how an expression with only 2 variables can find a numerical constant for their ratio. It must be possible, since I got close at 1.62.

I'm more curious how stupid I am regarding this (what I'm missing), and/or any special information regarding these types of problems. I tried searching the net a bit, but didn't really find anything (math can be impossible to google)

  • Is it legal to vaporize tobacco in public where smoking cigarettes/tobacco is banned?

When I say vaporize tobacco, it refers to boiling (vaporizing) the water and other constituents of the tobacco herb (such as nicotine) using a vaporizer device (many different kinds), and inhale the gas.

This does not burn anything, and does not cause smoke, only tobacco vapor (steam).

This question applies to specific zones of certain countries (ie. indoor public areas), and countries that have smoking banned. As the laws may be different in each area, please indicate what areas do or do not apply.

My guess is there's nothing wrong with it, but I'm sure many people may be bothered anyway.
