  • Maintaining a relationship while in the Navy?

I've been in the Navy for 6 months now and am in A school to be deployed on subs later this year. Sitting in my barracks room at the moment, I am heartbroken knowing that the girl I love isn't going to stay mine for much longer. We've been together over a year now and she doesn't live too far from me. She is however in college and not a moment passes where I wonder is she is cheating on me with some other guy. I simply can't help it.

When I get deployed we are over, I'm sure of it. How do any of you cope with relationships like this? She's my first everything. My love for her is too deep, and I feel this my be a liability down the road... Any advice at all? Thanks

  • Navy Jobs requirements?

I'm enlisting into the US Navy with a friend of mine here in the next few weeks. Our ASVAB is coming up and I've been studying hard to score well for my rating. If all goes right, I want to score a 252 on AR+MK+EI+GS in order to qualify for the nuclear program. I would love to work on nuclear reactors aboard ships and submarines as I have a knack for intricate scientific detail. I'm not quite sure however if I need a college education as I am coming directly from high school, so in short, I'm not sure whether this is an unrealistic aspiration of mine.

Alternatively, I would enjoy employment as a Sonar or electrical Technician or perhaps an engine Mechanic. Are these jobs (especially Nuclear Tech) limited to those with degrees or dependent on ASVAB score. Thank you.

  • I found a baby bird...what now?

It's night out, 9:30. While mowing my yard in the dark, I miraculously avoided slaughtering a fledgling bird; I saw it hopping about in the yard and put it in my inclined flower bed. I know we have multiple cats that wander about and knowing that this bird may have been orphaned, I only question the odds that it will survive to the morning.

I'm sure it has a mother about somewhere; unfortunately, if I'm mistaken, it will perish tonight. Aside from bs laws that restrict you from intervening, I doubt this will become a legal issue. If anyone has an issue with it, they'll take it up with me before waisting the police's time. So here's the million dollar question, should I take care of it.

I know two things to be certain, there isn't a nest for it within 200 yards, and if I leave it outside and the mother doesn't return, assuming it's alive; by sunrise tomorrow it will have become some cat's midnight snack. I don't want to abduct some poor baby bird, but it's almost the same situation with leaving a baby human in a hot car assuming it's mother is somewhere nearby. What should I do?

  • Can I attend two colleges at once?

More specifically, I want to attend two separate colleges in the same town for two entirely separate degrees. The colleges in mind are rather different, one being the Texas A&M Maritime college for Marine Transportation, the other being Galveston Community College just to study Spanish for two years. One college is four years, the other is two. I'm not sure on how that would play out, but if it's feasable it would be taken into consideration.

  • Feasibility of being a scientist?

The interest and intriguing nature of science has always been present with me, and the pursuit of practicing it has always been a goal of mine. However, I fear that the only viable option that is commonly accepted is to study and recieve a degree straight from college and then obtain a career in practicing such field.

The problem here is that academically, I'm an utter failure. My lack of dedication to the classroom has destroyed my GPA, yet I'm a rather intelligent person with a natural appeal to higher-level thinking and scientific study. Although I dislike the rigid nature of a classroom, I am profoundly interested in fields such as chemistry, paleontology, geology, biology, anthropology, and archaeology just to name a broad few. I want to practice some of these fields on the side, such as fossil and geographical categorization, or biological documentation in lesser explored areas. Assuming I can self fund these endeavors, and educate myself throughly on these subjects, will my lack of a degree automatically disqualify my work or discredit me as a ameture scientist?

It's not that I don't want to attend college and obtain a degree, it's that I most likely won't be permitted. With a <2.0 GPA and rather poor financial situation, I'm afraid that I'll simply be hindered from any actual scientific endevourment.

I know later in life when I can actually make decent money and invest it into scientific degrees, Ill do it when feasible. However, can I still practice science?

  • Organic Chemistry regarding decomposure and synthesis of Esters:?

I'm a high school chemistry student and currently constructing a project concerning esters. I'm wanting to do synthesis for part of my project but unfortunately complete synthesis will take to long, according to my teacher.

I though would it be possible to save time by taking an already existing ester, (Allyl hexanoate, Ethyl hexanoate, Methyl cinnamate)

or some similar ester odorant, decompose it in a reaction, and synthesis it into another ester.

I'm a high school student, so mind if any of this is incorrect or impossible. I'm just curious as to how it could be done. Any help is very much appreciated.

  • Can Lead really whiten teeth?

I read that a property of lead is that brushing with it assists in the cleaning and whitening of the teeth. Lead is obviously poisonous but only if it's ingested at any amount. Companies can't sell you lead because of the hazards as well as the law. But would adding refined lead to my toothpaste and heavily rinsing afterwards make my teeth white again?

  • What forms of life existed prior to the extinctions?

For instance, the film 'Avatar' had some pretty creative types of life both flora and fauna that captured the audiences amazement. Considering the billions of years our earth has been around, I'm curious as to if it was possible at some point that we had exotic and vibrant life forms here as you might see in the movie. I imagine flora for instance, as large colorful bioluminescent plants and ferns and maybe something like towering mushrooms as tall as trees. Perhaps plants and leaves many times larger than they are today with many variations in the form of them. I doubt fossil evidence could indicate if plants were bioluminescence or not. It seems like delicate organic matter like that would decay before having any sort of chance to be preserved. What's your take on this idea?

  • Is it wrong to be with a black girl?

I'm a white dude and there's this black chick that likes me. I've made it clear I don't want to date her but that doesn't mean we can't hook up, right? I'm not wanting sex, but just to make out a few times. She's cool with it, I'm just not sure. My friends say to stay away because she is crazy or say because she's black. She is alittle crazy I guess but I don't plan on dating her or really being with her, it's unfortunately more shallow than that. I don't care about skin color, because there are plenty of black girls I would date, she's just not one of them. Is wanting to hook up with her wrong?

  • What is the right way to become a maritime officer?

I'm aspiring to be an officer aboard a merchant marine vessel. Aside from completing any military work or programs, what is the right path to take when attempting to attain education?

I've looked at the USMMA, but they are very prestigious and expensive. Realistically my odds of making it are very slim. I've looked into several maritime universities, like the ones in California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Texas. Texas A&M maritime at Galveston is the closest to me. But I've also seen other institutes like MPT that offer USCG approved courses that teach what I assume is the same material and offer the same training. That's an uneducated guess though.

If I want to be at least a third mate, what courses, levels of degrees, or training would I need?

  • Am I screwed Academically?

In these paragraphs. I am being as sincere as possible. I am a 16 year old student in the middle of his junior year in high school. Regrettably, the last few years have been awful, both as far as academics and finances are concerned. My father lost his business two years ago and ever since then our quality of life diminished, along with my adolescent attitude.

I failed Algebra my freshman year of high school due to not turning in work. I had a teacher whom I could generously construe as lethargic and ill-composed. That does not excuse my actions however. The following year I had to quit attending the private school and attend a public one.

This is when it got much worse. My father, who has a destructive tendency of negligence, permitted me to skip school. Unfortunately to my dismay, I learned to following summer that i had failed the second semester of Geometry, Accounting, and Spanish. I attempted to repair this academical wound by attending summer school, and made up Geometry. I still have to make up Spanish in the upcoming weeks.

And now I am here. With remorse so vast I worry everyday of the inevitable. What will become of me when I get out of High school? I am however, not an person of dull intellect. I have concluded that I want to attend the USMMA, one of the most prestigious maritime schools in the state. But with aspirations so high, yet with academic reality so far opposite of that, I truly wonder if this is the end of my future. Over before it ever started.

  • How to become a Merchant Marine?

From my understanding, becoming a professional sailor is not easy work. Aside from going to the USMMA, how would one become a merchant mariner?

I am thinking that I want to be a professional sailor. I don't care too much about pay, I am primarily focused on a career. Extensive training and education along with sea time is required to become a sailor. I am young and wouldn't necessarily mind climbing th hawsepipe, however I would rather meet the requirements to become a lower level sailor, save my money, and return to improve my education to raise my grade. Being an officer after years of work would be great too.

If I could figure out where to begin, that is the key. I am considering some sort of institute or vocational college, but I am not clear on the how-to of any of this. I need information on apprenticeships, cadet programs, sea time, colleges, grades, and anything else essential to achieve this. Thank you.

  • Breaking into the Maritime Industry.?

Hello, I am a 16 year old junior currently attending high school in Arkansas. Lately, I have been researching and inquiring about the "how-to" of entering the Maritime Industry; a career field that i have aspired to be employed in for years now. I am sure at this point that this is what I want to do.

Living the entirety of my life in an inland state, with little more than a river passing through it and a lake here and there, not much is known around here regarding said field. Most of the people I know around here don't know much at all about it, and therefor I can never receive reliable advice on what to do and how to do it. First, let me give you a brief rundown.

I want to work aboard a commercial cargo vessel. I want to start of as an ABS. I want to improve and bolster up the command chain. Also, enlisting in the Navy or USCG is a last option kind of deal with me.

I have learned of a institute called Maritime Professional Training, or MPT. From what i have gathered, it is sort of a technical school that offers courses in all sorts of maritime skills and knowhow. I am thinking of attending here and getting certified to be an ABS, and then attempting to find work aboard a commercial ship. Let me elaborate, I am not studied up or knowledgeable on any of this. Please provide me information and correct me where needed.

    Thank You

  • Legality of forming a militia?

So let's say for example an enemy group formed in a state, for example let's say the State is Arkansas and the enemy is the Cartel.

So the Cartel form high numbers of men, let's say around 5,000. (This is still purely hypothetical) and they have negative intentions on obtaining control of most of the state. So they start occupying towns and neighborhoods and causing harm to the people of Arkansas.

If the state did little or nothing to stop them. Would it be legal for the citizens of Arkansas to form together as a militia, arm themselves, informally elect a general or something, and march on to fight the enemy back? Would they be violating laws? Would the state try to stop them, even if they only had good intentions in mind?

I know this is a odd question, but I would like to know the legality of this.

  • Were the World Wars really "world wars"?

Just thinking about it, World War 1's primary theater was in Europe. Im not too studied up on ww1, but as far as a world war would go, it seems like fighting should have been on a more global scale.

World War 2 saw fighting in Europe, Africa, And Eastern Asia, as well as Japan fighting in the Pacific. But there were no battles in the Americas, Continental Australia, or even in most of Africa or Asia. Shouldn't these wars be referred to as European Continental wars or something?

Im not trying to sound ignorant or stupid, its just i don't understand the logic in the names of these conflicts.

Also if a "Third World War" broke out, I'm sure there it still wouldn't see much fighting in South America, Australia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Financially being able to afford a boat. Adults, I need realistic advice.?

I'm a 16 year old high school student with aspirations for my life. I've had a dream for years now of seeing the world and sailing the seas. Even if that sounds cliché, it is a realistic dream of mine.

I've done research into this for years, and I've discovered that living aboard a small boat (~50 feet) is not only possible, but more common than not. Life aboard a small sailing vessel and sailing the world going from place to place isn't an impossible task, it has been done many times. I just don't know how ill afford it.

Being 16 and only having a job for less than a year, I realize in order to afford a ~$150,000 boat and being able to maintain it won't come easy. I have been saving everything I've made bussing tables at a local pizza joint, I've accumulated less than 1,500. But that's just a part time high school job.

The problem is what am I going to do to financially achieve this goal of mine. I'm afraid of pursuing a "career life". Because I know that if I go to college or whatever, time will slip me by and I'll end up being 40 years old and no closer to my real dreams than I am right now. I don't want life to pass by before I can reach my goal. I've considered becoming a captain or sailor or similar work, but everything costs money, and if I follow (Edu.=Job=Money=boat) than I'll end up at job with debt and other responsibilities and be tied down to a place. I want to be mobile and explore the world, experience it while I still have my youth. What should I do?

Whats the best advice and information to give someone who has a relatively blank slate. Im 16 years old, and I realize that the best advice comes from somebody who has experience. If you could have a do-over at life, being 16 years old, What Would You Do?
