Dam Engineer
By profession, I am a Civil (water resources) Engineer. I am also a volunteer (unpaid, unless you consider getting a TShirt or a $10 to Starbucks as getting paid) with Youth For Understanding (yfu-usa.org). My husband and I are currently hosting our 7th long-term high school foreign exchange student. I absolutely LOVE talking about my kids (we don't have any children of our own) and YFU. Feel free to email me directly at DamEngineer@msn.com. Just as a note, it's OK if you become a "Fan" of me, but I do not make connections on here - just my own policy - don't take it personally.
Repairing staples pull outs in MDF?
For Christmas, I let our son staple lights to the ceiling of our exterior entryway. When he pulled out the staples, they didn't leave a nice clean hole - some of the wood was pulled out but not completely removed - it's still attached. I believe the material is medium density fiberboard (MDF).
I need to fix these areas. How do I get a nice clean surface for touch-up paint? Can I just sand off the wood that is hanging down? I'm guessing that will leave indentations, but I can fill those.
Thank you for your assistance.
4 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)8 years agoWhat materials are in Lithium ion hybrid car batteries?
I know that hybrids also use NMH batteries; I'm curious about the Lithium-ion batteries that are in cars such as the Ford CMax. Please provide links to more info.
Thanks!!
2 AnswersAlternative Fuel Vehicles8 years agoAre the Coca (from which cocaine comes) and Cacao (from which cocoa comes) related at all?
This is to settle a bet between two very stubborn people (one of whom is me). We both acknowledge that the plants are entirely different species. How closely are they related?
Please site concrete, scientific sources that discuss the relationship if possible.
Thank you!!
2 AnswersBotany9 years agoMSOffice 2010 Finding Available Printers LONG Delay?
I have had this problem ever since I got my new desktop computer a few months ago. The first time I try to print a document from a MSOffice program (Excel, Word, Outlook), after I click on 'Print' or press Ctrl-P, it takes 3 or more minutes to 'find available printers'. (Also, if I go to the Control Panel and look for printers, it takes a couple of minutes to populate the list.) During this time I can't do anything in the program from which I want to print the document (I can do other things of course). This is in an office setting and I have one printer connected directly to my PC and a few others via network. I am running Windows 7 (32bit) and MSOffice 2010 (preloaded by Dell). This doesn't happen when I print from anyother program (Adobe, AutoCAD, Internet Explorer, etc.). In fact, it has been faster for me to open the documents in Adobe (Professional version) and print from there than to wait for MSOffice to find the printers. My virus scanner is up to date and so a virus shouldn't be a problem. This only happens the first time I print a document or anytime I "View Devices and Printers" via the Control Panel.
I've Googled this problem and haven't really found any help. Any good ideas?
Thank you! I am getting frustrated by this issue.
1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agoThings to do/see around Wilhelmshaven, Germany?
In July, we will be traveling to a town outside of Wilhelmshaven. (We live in the USA.) We will be visiting our German son (to us, our son, to the rest of the world, the exchange student from Germany that we hosted last year) and his natural family. We will not be needing hotel accommodations, but do need some advice on things to do & see in the area. We have gotten some books from the library, but they don't even mention the area. We're aware of the naval musuem and aquarium. Does anyone have any other advice? We've asked our boy, but he's a teenager and teenagers never think there's anything good to do/see in their area.
I found a similar question from 3 years ago. I hope someone will have some updated information.
Also, websites in German won't really help us - although I am learning to speak some Germany, the course I'm taking is strictly audio - I'm not sure I could understand anything written. (I am almost fluent in Spanish, though.)
Thank you!!
4 AnswersOther - Germany1 decade agoAny advice for using clear resin to encase cross stitch?
I do alot of cross stitch and am thinking of making something where the piece will be encased in clear resin (acrylic or epoxy). I've seen quite a few projects where rocks, shells, or other mementos have been encased in resin, but not a fabric/cross stitch project. Does anyone have anyone have any advice for making sure the project turns out well? On to what should I mount the cross stitch? Will cardboard or foam core board work? How do I make sure there are no air bubbles in it? Are there any problems with color transfer from the fabric or floss to the resin? Have you every done such a project?
Thank you very much!
2 AnswersHobbies & Crafts1 decade agoHow to remove bloody taste of wild antelope meat?
My husband went hunting earlier this year and got an antelope (yes, members of animal rights groups, he killed Bambi with horns). Most of it was turned into sausage, but we kept some of the better cuts. Previous experience with game meat has taught me that I really don't like (to put it mildly) the bloody taste of un-aged meat (I had the same issue with un-aged beef). I've tried soaking it in milk, but that didn't really help. Spices didn't really help either (I can still taste it in the sausage).
Do any of you have any suggestions? Maybe I'm just being too picky, but we all have our preferred tastes, and blood isn't one of mine.
10 AnswersHunting1 decade agoToy recommendation for 4-yr old who likes maps - what should I get him?
I have a nephew who will be turning 4 in mid-December. He is obsessed with maps and loves to travel. I thought about getting him a globe for his birthday or Christmas, but am concerned that a globe might be a little boring to him and he might not really understand it. (I don't have any kids of my own and we only see him 2-3 times per year, so I'm not entirely sure of the developmental curve for kids his age.) Any suggestions, either general or specific?
Thanks alot!
7 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoCan I mail-order steaks to Germany?
I have read that Germany will not allow someone (such as a person or company like Omaha Steaks) in the USA to send beef to someone in Germany. Is there a service similar to Omaha Steaks in Germany (or anywhere else in Europe that can ship to Germany)? I'm sure it will be quite expensive, but I would like to look into it. I don't speak (or read) any German, but know someone who does.
I would like to do this as a gift very soon.
Thank you in advance!
7 AnswersOther - Germany1 decade agoWhat is the maximum length answer allowed by Yahoo Answers?
I just want to know how long an answer can be and still have the full answer visible to both the Asker and any one viewing the answer. If you know the answer, feel free to just quote me the number of characters (or words, or whatever else they use). Otherwise, I don't mind if people write REALLY long answers about almost ANY subject as long as they periodically give me the character count in the text of the answer. As long as there is no cursing, attacks on anyone's beliefs (religious or otherwise), racial/sexual slurs, or promotion of violence or illegal activities, I don't care what you write. In other words, make sure it's clean enough so that even a 12 year old could read it.
Thanks! I really curious to see how this turns out.
Please do not just tell me you've seen answers that take up pages and pages. I'm looking for a very specific number for how long Yahoo will allow the answer to be.
