1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoMathematical Modeling with Quadratic Functions: Maximum and Minimum Problem???
The marketing department at Texas Instruments has found that, when certain calculators are sold at a price of "p" dollars per unit, the number "x" of calculators sold is given by the demand equation:
x = 21000 - 150p
1. Express the revenue "R" as a function of the price "p"
2. What unit price should be used to maximize revenue? (Complete the square of your revenue function to identify the vertex)
3.If this price is charged, what is the maximum revenue?
4. How many units are sold at this price?
I then haveto graph this, I'm having troubles understanding this concept and don't know where to start to set up the revenue as a function of the price equation??Help please??
3 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoSolve this equation, using the quadratic formula? 3x^2-3x-2=0??
The equation is 3x^2-3x-2=0
I got a=3, b= -3, c= -2
I plugged this into the quadratic formula
-(-3) +or- square root of (-3)^2-4(3)(-2)/6
this gave me the answer of:
3 + or - (the square root of) 33/6
so x= 1.457 or x= - 0.457
Can someone check this over and tell me if this is right, or how to do it right??
My friend got the answer:
3+or - (square root of) 65/4
x= 2.766 or x= -1.266????

The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 22 metres long. The length of one leg is 10 metres less than the other. Find the lengths of the legs.
I'm going to try and show you what I've done and please tell me where I'm going wrong, or/ and if my answer is correct.
Let x = one leg
x-10 = 2nd leg
22 (m) = hypotenuse
I used pythagreom theorum to get the equation: x^2 + (x-10)^2 = 22^2
so when I foiled I got: 2x^2 -20x +100 = 484
I then factored out "2"
2(x^2 -10x +10) = 242
x^2 - 10x -232=0
I then used the quadratic formula
with a=1, b=(-10), c= (-232)
The answer I got was:
x=10(+ or -) square root of 1028/2
x= 21.031 and 21.031 -10= 11.031 (leg #2)
Can someone tell me if this is right or help me with the steps, where I am going wrong?
What answers do you come up with?
My friend told me she got 19.731 and 9.731?
Thanks!!!
4 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoGenetics practice word problems?
I'm really struggling with this genetics concept, I figured if someone could walk me through the steps of these practice questions, it could help me to learn this. How do I set up the punnett squares for these and ratios?
1) In cats the genotype (BB) is black. Bb is tortoise shell, and bb is yellow. The gene is on the X chromosome. A tortoise shell female is crossed with a black male. What offspring would be expected? Would you normally expect to find any tortoise shell males?
2) Occasionally a tortoise shell male is found, and when found in sterile. Suggest an explanation for the occurrence of tortoise shell males.
3) A couple with a newborn baby are troubled that the child does not appear to resemble either of them. Suspecting that a mix up occurred at the hospital, they check the blood type of the infant. The baby has type (O) blood. Because the father is type (A), and the mother is type (B), they conclude that a mistake must have been made. Are they correct?
3 AnswersBiology1 decade agoGenetics Problems?
1) In andalusian chickens, the genotype (BB) produces black feathers, (bb) produces white feathers and (Bb) produces grey feathers. Which of the following crosses would yield the highest proportion of grey chickens?
a) black rooster with a grey hen
b) grey rooster with a white hen
c) grey rooster with a grey hen
d) black rooster with a white hen
* I'm not just looking for a multiple choice answer here, I want to learn how to solve this? Should I use a punnet square? How would I set it up?
2) In watermelons the genes for green color and short shape are dominant over their alleles for striped color and long shape. Suppose a plant with along striped fruit is crossed with a plant heterozygous for both these characters. What phenotypes would this cross produce and in what ratios?
How should I set up this as a punnet square?
I'm not sure how to figure out the ratios either. Anyone know of any good sites or can help me with this would be great. Thank you.

Describe what is occurring in each of the following phases of meiosis including the number of chromatid arms present in each cell in each phase if the 2N number is 16.?
Prophase 1
Telophase 1
Metaphase 2
Anaphase 2
* I know what happens during each of these phases, but I am unclear about the number of chromatid arms present in each cell in each phase if the 2N number is 16.
If someone could explain precisely how to calculate or figure this out, that would help me greatly, thank you.

Have a midterm this afternoon and just want to go over a few concepts?
1) f(x)= x+7/x^2-2x-15
I got x= 5 or x=-3, how do I write this in interval notation (and is my answer right?)
set notation?
2) 2/a +2/b divided by/ a^2-b^2/ab
I got 2/ a-b as an answer?
3) 2/x-5 + x-1/(x+5)(x-5) = 3/x+5
I cleared all the fractions by multiplying by the common denominator (x+5)(x-5)
which left me with 3x-9= 3x-15?
don't think this is right because the 3x's cancel each other out, can someone take me through the steps to see where I went wrong?
4) this is a radical equation
and I will use brackets to express what is the radicand {}
f(x) = -{x+1}
I think I haveto make a table to solve this ??? and I haveto write the answer in interval notation?
I got [-1, infinity) ????
I set up my table as x= -1, 0, 2,3, 4
which made my y axis equal to -1.4, -1, -1.73, 2, 2.4????
Can someone go over my answers and tell me what I'm doing right and help me with what I'm doing wrong? thx!
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agopolynomial division?with a difference of perfect cubes???
I can't seem to figure out how to solve this:
y^3 + 216 divided by/ y+6
I figured out the difference of cubes first:
y^3 + 216 = (y+6)(y^2 - 6y + 36)
this is where I get stuck, when I tried to do long division with this. Or is it possible to just put the difference of cubes as the numerator and the polynomial in the denomiator and just cancel the y+6???
Can someone please show me the steps, or explain the steps to me of how to solve this equation????

2 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoadding and subtracting rational expressions?
x^3/ x^2-y^2 + y^3/ y^2-x^2
I'm having trouble with this concept, I'll show you what I've done and maybe you can explain to me where I'm going wrong, or show me how you would solve this equation, step by step; here is how I've done it ????
x^3 / x^2 -y^2 + y^3/ y^2 -x^2
= x^3/ (x-y)(x+y) + y^3/ (y-x)(y+x)
I figured (x+y) and (y+x) mean the same thing in the denominator; so I therefore did this:
x^3(y-x)/ (y-x)(x-y)(x+y) + y^3(x-y)/(y-x)(x-y)(x+y)
I then cancelled out the (y-x) from the numerator and denominator of the first expression and did the same with the second but cancelled out the (x-y) instead.
This then left me with:
x^3 +y^3/(x-y)(x+y)
I then factored out the top by sum of perfect cubes and got:
(x+y)(x^2-xy+y^2)/(x-y)(x+y)
I then cancelled out the x+y from the numerator and denominator and was left with this answer:
x^2-xy +y^2/ x-y
Hope it has helped by showing you how I got to this answer and any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoDivision of Polynomials?
(3x^4 + 2x^3 - 11x^2 - 2x + 5)divided by(x^2 - 2)
Need help with this concept, I have managed to figure everything else out on my own, but I was unable to attend class on the lesson of division of polynomials due to crohn's disease. From reading the textbook and the website purplemath.com I have the basic idea, but when I apply the concept to this question, it doesn't seem to work out, I'm trying to do long division. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, an explanation of how to get to the answer would help me to learn this, thanks!!!
