Why is the Velocity faster in a Longer barrel than a short one?
Why is the Velocity faster in a Longer barrel than a short one? I ask because I just don't understand why people say this. I am thinking about getting a .308 in Remington VLS, 26" Bull Barrel or a Remington Tactical in a 20" Bull Barrel. I don't won't to get the 20" Barrel and it slow the bullet down (Because a .308 is slow as it is), but if it's not slowing it down toooo much, I wouldn't mind saving the extra $300 buck by not getting the Higher VLS with the 26" barrel but I will gladly pay the extra price if it helps. I will be mainly using the rifle in bench targeting and hunting in a box stand. Which would be more accurate (20" or 26"). I'd appreciate any opinions on the pros and cons of each along with explaining WHY the slower speeds in the 20" Barrel and the increased speeds in the longer. Thanks!!

13 AnswersHunting1 decade agoCan you shoot .280 Ackley ammo in a .280 Remington rifle?
Can you shoot .280 Ackley ammo in a .280 Remington rifle? I just bought a .280 H&R single shot and am looking for some good .280 ammo for it and ran into a problem. There are .280 Remington ammo and then there is .280 Ackley. Are they the same or are they different? Can I shoot both in my rifle?

I saw a H&R Single Shot .280 at Wal-Mart for $245, Is this a good deal for a deer hunting rifle? I am asking because it sounded like to good of a deal to be true and I don't really know much about the .280 Caliber. What is it compared to (the .280 Cal), I'm assuming it is close to the .270. I will be putting a Leupold Rifleman on it if I get it, would this combination do it's job on deer within 100-250 yards on average. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks for any help.

7 AnswersHunting1 decade agoIs the .308 Win. strong enough to kill Elk within 100-150 yards, or do I need something bigger and stronger?
I asked this question earlier and people gave me crap about the info of the question so I rephrased it. Is the .308 Win strong enough to kill Elk at 100-150 yards using a 165-180 grain bullet, or do I need something bigger and stronger?
12 AnswersHunting1 decade agoIs the .308 Caliber strong enough to kill Elk at 300 Plus Yards or do I need something bigger and stronger?
I know the .308 caliber is known for it's great accuracy but is it potent enought to take elk down at 300 to 350 yards? I hunt deer mostly and will start to hunt Elk next season and make it a yearly thing so I want to know if I need to get something bigger or can I stay with my .308?
