  • can't scan computer with any programs?

Hi, I have a computer that a Pentium 4 512MB Ram, 80GB HD, WinXP Home service pack 3, IE . I can not run any scans on it such as defrag, error check, I cannot run the virus scan that is on it which is ESET Nod32. I have noticed that there are a few viruses on there just by the name of the program but I can't get them off. I have tried to download free scanners for viruses and maleware such as avira, avg, maleware byte, hitman pro, sypware doctor but cannot download them at all. I have tried all this in safemode aswell but it doesn't work either.

I was told to try system restore to an eairlyer point but have not done so yet. I do not understand how this would work if the virus is already in the system?

Any ideas? Please give an explanation with your idea as to why and how it would work.

  • Can't download Computer Protection scans?

Hi, I have been trying to download Male ware Byte, Avira, hitman pro, Spyware Doctor etc... But the computer will not let me. For spyware doctor is says I have to do a smart update but I can't do one no matter what I do. The other programs I can download them and install them but when I try to use them nothing happens. I also can not do a defrag or error check. I tried to do all this in safe mode and still can not do anything. I know there are a few viruses that the scanner(Eset nod32) is not picking up and I can't delete them.

The computer is running XP Home service pack 3, IE 7, 512MB Ram, Pentium 4, 80GB Hard drive,

Also when you first turn the computer on it comes up with selecting the OS and it give XP home and Whistler Personal. I can get into XP but not the Whistler although I've heard that Whistler is the original name for XP.

    Any help would be great.

  • Question about Partitioning ?

I have a 40GB hard drive that just crashed. What i want to do is partition it into 2 drives so that the OS(XP Home) will be on one and everything else will be on the second part. However one thing i would like to know before i do this is when i install programs such as mcafee, spy-sweeper, can i install them on the second partition(drive D) and have links to them in the start menu even though the start menu is in drive C? or will my programs have to be installed on drive C and only have my data and files on drive D?

Or would it just be better to leave it as one partition?
