  • How can I fund a semester of study abroad?

I'm a non-traditional student (older) and I would love to spend a semester studying abroad. Unfortunately, my finances are such that I cannot just spend $18,000 at random. I am a Junior and already pretty deep in student debt.

It seems I'm in that unfortunate place in life where my parents are dead and because of a long decline of Alzheimer's left me with nothing but debt. I have very little other family and none I am close to.

I'm a good student but not an exemplary one (about a 3.5 GPA) I never qualify for any of the academic scholarships offered because as good as I am there are others better. I also don't qualify for any of the need based scholarships available because no one thinks a middle class mom is deserving of a need based scholarship. As much as I can't afford the $18,000 to take a semester in India, there are other people out there who are poorer and more needy than I am so I end up falling through the cracks.

Is there anyplace a person like me can go for help? I have signed up with all of the scholarship web sites through my school and I have applied for over 100 scholarships and I have never even heard back as much as a thanks.

I would love to study in India and right now I have no idea how I can finance it. Anyone have any ideas? Has anyone done anything creative to finance something like this?

  • What style of architecture is my house?

I have just purchased a new home, I love it but I can't figure out what style it is. I have seen many similar houses throughout the southern and southwestern United States but I can't figure out what it is and no amount of searching has brought up houses like this.

    Here is a description:

    Located in the Southwestern US

Built in 1976 completely original everything, like a time warp.

It is a custom home (R4 grade) which is on a mountain side

The home has stucco exterior walls and a flat foam roof. It has a built up facade around the edge of the roof so it looks taller and no roof features like A/C units and ducting are visible.

There are no lodge poles or spanish tiles on the house.

It is not, Spanish, Mediterranean, Pueblo or Santa Fe.

The house has slanted maple or cedar planks around the entry way and on other non load bearing exterior walls. This slanted plank is something I consider very 70's or early 80's but have only seen on more ranch looking homes before.

On the interior, the house has an atrium when you walk in the front door.

It has a rubble stone fireplace as a focal point

It has a very open floor plan, you can see the whole living space from anyplace in the house but rooms are defined by elevation.

The ceiling is made from very heavy square beams with the same cedar planking as on the exterior as the ceiling cover.

There are some 70's version arts and crafts lighting fixtures in the home but I don't feel they really go with the home. There are also the hanging lights which feel almost more 60's.

All kitchens and baths have tile counter tops and two tone wood cabinetry.

The interior walls are all white plaster, hand smeared smooth.

    Floor is shag carpet.

    Lots of windows.

If anyone has any keywords I could use to try searching for what style my house is, aside from 70's which is really not helping me, I would be so appreciative.

  • 9 year old dog losing hair suddenly?

I have a 9 year old Doxhuahua who has the soft very short hair like a dachshund. He has allergies and is on Chlorpheniramine prescribed by the veterinarian.

Yesterday I gave him a bath and used the normal hypoallergenic shampoo I use on him and he was normal. He gets the same bath with the same shampoo every week.

Today, he is covered in bald spots. His hair falling out in spots about the size of half dollars all over. There is no crust like a ringworm, there is no skin discoloration or texture difference. It looks like human alopecia.

Does anyone have any ideas? His behavior is normal. He is a very playful and energetic dog with no other health problems who had a vet check up in June. He is not overweight. We live in a city and he is an indoor dog with a 1/4 acre fenced yard not exposed to any wild animals or parasites. We have never had fleas or ticks. My other dogs are healthy.

He will see the vet on Monday unless someone has a reason which would warrant an emergency room visit.

  • Am I the only one who finds those T-Mobile commercials sexist and retarded?

The mobile makeover ones where they have no one willing to see the men or smart or reasonable people there offering to help them save money so they decide to send a hot female around instead and now all of these men are acting like retards around her? And of course she is talking to them because apparently T-Mobile thinks all men are blathering morons and women don't have cell phones. Weird.
