  • How to find a good vet?

What is a good way to find the vet for you? I have a 4 month old puppy (beagle/basset mix) and I do not like the vet that I had went to the first time. He is needing to get a rabies shot, allergy checkup (hopefully) and neutured soon and I would like to find a new vet. The previous vet looked at him for like 2 mintues, Barely checked him over and then gave me medicine for a condition he might have because he didn't know why he was itching so much. Yes he was nice but I don't think Drax got the care he deserved or needed so I am on the hunt for someone new. I didn't know if there was any way or tips on finding a good vet. I don't know many people that go to the vets so referrals are hard to come by. I am an animal care specialist student so I can do somethings by my self and know enough when a dog isn't getting the right care. If you have any tips on how to find that perfect vet or advice please let me know.

  • Anyone have experience with puppy impetigo/ pyoderma?

My puppy, 4 months old beagle/basset mix, has developed puppy impetigo from scratching due to his allergies. This spots (pimple like) are on his armpits (front and back) and on his belly. I was wondering if anyone has had this in their puppy or dog and how they went about having it treated. I am starting the hydrogen peroxide treatment as recommend but was curious to see if anyone had any other ideas.

  • dog allergy testing?

I am thinking of possibly getting my dog tested for allergies, so I can better control them. I am having him neutered soon and was going to talk to the vet about my options but I wanted to know if anyone has had their dog tested or done something similar. If so, do you know the cost of the tests. I would prefer the blood screen over the injections.

I am also going to ask the vet if there is any medicine that will help his itching and scratching more, bendreyl is not working.

If you have any insight or suggestion please feel free to comment. thanks.

  • Chew toys for puppy?

I have a 10 week old puppy and I need to find good, safe, long lasting treats for him to chew on. I like to try to keep him busy at times and need something that is healthy for a puppy. My aunt gave me iams dental bones, which he liked but they said they were not recommended for puppies. After looking at the store I notice that most of the chew long lasting toys are only recommended for adults. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have tried kong toys. He will not bother with them unless they have treats or peanut butter in them. And if they are too far he will stop and do something else. I need something to keep him busy during car rides, while we eat, and when he is alone. thanks

  • Contact allergies?

My puppy Drax is a beagle/basset mix. He has contact allergies from the weeds and grass around me house. They are getting worse and now is is stracthing and biting so much he is causing small sores on himself, these scabs don't hurt when I doctor them or look at them. The doctor didn't know what was wrong when we went to him but after going on vacation for a few days with no grass or weeds he was getting better, not hardly scratching but when we got home it got worse and quick.

I am looking for treatments to put on the dog or give him to help relieve the itching so he will stop causing scabs on himself. Right now they are being clean and tonight I will be doing the following:

Mowing the lawn and removing the cut grass/weeds

    vacuuming the house

Washing his toys, blankets, and everything else

    Giving him an oatmeal bath

    Applying antiseptic to his scabs

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of any products safe for a puppy that will lick and bite at the area please let me know

  • Puppy Biting, How to stop?

I have a 9 week old puppy, who I have had for 3 weeks. He is biting people mostly flesh (toes, hands, arms, whatever) and pant legs. I have been trying to get him to stop but nothing seems to be working. Sometimes its not bad but when he is being really playful he gets excited and bites harder. Also after playing with other dogs he thinks he can play with us as rough as he plays with him. He is doing great on all other areas its just the biting that I am worried about. He has learned not to go out of the yard, to sit, go to the door to use the bathroom and such but doesn't get no and when I take him off of my, make him let go of say my leg he thinks it is a game and comes back to wrestle and bite. He has plenty of toys he loves to play with. He doesn't chew up the furiture and when caught biting the carpet will stop when told so but not on human flesh. He loves anyone and everyone but he jsut bites. Any suggestions?

He also has allergies to the grass/weeds I believe that need help.

  • Puppy scratching belly all the time?

I have had my puppy for a week and a half. He is almost 8 weeks old and has been scratching for a while. His belly is getting hot and red. He tends to bite at his belly and his back legs. He crys because he itches so much and can't always reach the areas. I am calling the vet and making an appoinment for tonight after i get off work. I hate having him cry all the time.

I have tried bathing him in oatmeal shampoo, but he doesn't like baths and I don't want to give him to many and dry out his skin. I have also tried a spray for hot spots and itch reliever. This seems to give him a little relief but not for long. He is eating Wellness Puppy food and really likes it.

I have checked him for fleas but found none, however this does not mean he wasn't bit and is having a reaction to them.

Does anyone have any ideas to what could cause this? I will be taking him to the vet tonight to try and get him some relief.

  • How to treat fleas on 6 week old puppy?

I just got my puppy and he has been scratching. I can't find any fleas on him but I would like to go ahead and treat him to help maybe relieve some of his itching. Is there anything I can treat him with since he is so young? Advantage and Frontline can't be used until 8-12 weeks old. I would also like to treat the carpet too. Thanks in advance.

  • Neutering puppy, what age? Laser Surgery?

I am getting a puppy this friday and was wondering at what age should I have him neutered. He will be 6 weeks old. I was not sure if I should wait a week or two to have him neutered or not. I will be calling a few vets in my area today to see what they recommend and the prices.

I was also wanting to have the laser surgery done. Less bleeding, less pain, and quicker recovery. Has anyone had experience with this?

    Thanks for the responses.

  • What is the breed mix?

I will be getting one of the puppies in the picture below and was wondering if anyone can tell what other breeds are most likely to be in it.

The couple that I am getting him from adopted his mother and she was pregnant when the shelter said she was spayed but they kept her and the puppies anyways. The mother is a beagle basset hound mix but I don't know what the father is.

Does anyone have any idea on the breeds?
