  • Rear derailleur issues?

I bought an old mountain bike with the idea of refurbishing it into a commuter.

When shifting, the chain only goes to the middle and smaller gears of the cassettte. Won't go into the lower gears. Trying to figure out what the issue is. Could it be the lower limit screw needs adjusting? Any suggestions?

  • Dynamo hub on front wheel of a MTB?

I am signed up for a wheelbuilding class at my LBS. I would like to build a front wheel that has a dynamo hub. Any suggestions as to which model is good quality. The bike (a mountain bike that I use as a commuter) has rim brakes, 26" wheel, 32h.

    Thanks

  • Shifting - rear derailleur issues?

On my commute this morning, my bike acted like it wanted to shift on it's own - totally annoying. It's a mountain bike (GT Avalanche) that I modified for commuting. Other than this problem the bike is great.

I've heard this called ghost shifting by a bike mechanic. Does anyone know what adjustment to make to correct this?

  • Seat post engagement?

Regarding the seat post, what is the minimum engagement length? I'm a taller rider and generally have the seat up high. I was wondering at what point I need to get a longer post.

  • Can anybody solve this trig equation?

    800*tan(theta) -14.835 / (cos(theta))^2 = 0

I know the answer is about 1.06 degrees because I used the solver function on my HP, but how would it be solved algebraically?

Is there some trig identity I am missing?

    Thanks

  • How much honey equals a cup of sugar?

I prefer to use honey instead of sugar when baking because I understand honey is better for you. So if a recipe calls for a cup of sugar, how much honey would I use?

  • Why were so many ships stationed at Pearl Harbor?

Were the US military leaders not aware that the discension between the two countries would likely provoke an offensive by Japan?

It seems like the military leaders were asleep at the wheel.

  • To the programmers: C vs. C++?

I have to take a "high level programming language" as a prerequisite for a math course.

    Which is easier to learn?

Do you have to know C before you can take C++?

I've taken Fortran and Pascal and I picked it up OK, however I never do much programming for my job so I essesntially forget most of what I learned.

  • To the computer math people: Use of hex, octal?

I understand the use for binary, as everything can be written in terms of 0 or 1, which makes computing efficient. But why is there hex and octal?

  • How to ask the receptionist out?

I have this major crush on the receptionist at my dentist's office. I don't really know her well at all, she's just very nice and extra cute. I think she is not married as I do not see a ring.

How do I approach her about going out? Usually when I sign in at the office there is always someone else around, so it could be kind of awkward to ask her for a date.

  • Graduate math degree?

This question is primarily addressed to people that have completed an MS in Math. I would like some advice.

I am starting my MS in Math next fall. I'm an engineer by profession but have decided I want to teach junior college math, therefore I need a graduate math degree.

I loved the math required for my BS and MS engineering degrees because I could see the direct application of it. From what I understand, a graduate math degree requires several courses in theoretical math like topology which involve solving proofs. I was never very good at this, in fact I barely got through high school geometry. Is there a course or something I could take that would help me with this challenge?
