  • What is that huge old building W of Cincinnati on the River Road?

It's red brick, and looks like an institution of some kind, either an old asylum or orphanage, similar to the Kirkbride design. It's up on a hill, on the north side of the River Road/56, near Cleves, outside of Cincinnati. I've tried to find info online about it, but nothing so far. Any suggestions/links would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • If you had to choose one of these 3 cars for a long roadtrip....

which would you choose? The roadtrip will be about 4000 miles roundtrip, from the midwest to LA and back through the southwest in late fall. All three cars are in reasonably good shape, and have good stereos. You have your choice of:

1995 Subaru sedan, auto, FWD, 150K, no sunroof, ~27 mpg. Comfy, fast without being (ahem) noticeable.

2003 VW Golf diesel, 5-sp, sunroof, 100k, ~48 mpg. Big hatch, comfy, but can get cramped on long trips.

    2008 Toyota 4Runner 4WD, sunroof, 9k, ~24 mpg. Huge, can go off-road.

We aren't planning on going on any really rough roads except in some of the national parks, gas price is a factor, but so is room because we're planning on camping. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Looking for a city where live music is still appreciated.?

    Hi,

My husband is a pianist--New Orleans-style blues and funk, mostly, with lots of originals. We're looking to get out of flyover country and go somewhere where people understand more than just country and classic rock (not that there's anything wrong with either, we just want some more variety). We'd love to be somewhere where he can get gigs playing his own music on a regular basis. New Orleans is a consideration, obviously, but we want to make sure we aren't overlooking any other place. My job is pretty portable, so not much of a consideration there. Any suggestions for a good place for a blues/funk/jazz pianist to call home?

    Thanks!

  • 1995 Subaru won't start, tach and speedo needles don't move--could it be the alternator?

My '95 Subaru started just fine this morning, but the battery light and brake light stayed on. It ran fine, but the temperature gauge kept dropping, and towards the end of the trip (25 miles), the tach and speedo needles started jumping, then dropped and stayed put. Once I got to work and parked, I shut the car off, then tried to turn it back on to see if it was ok. It didn't even turn over; all the lights on the dash came on (and the battery and brake light stayed on), but nothing happened. I tried twice. Does this sound like a broken alternator belt? It was fine Friday when I last drove it, and it sat all weekend, so this is a brand-new quirk. I also noticed, the other day, when checking the oil (which was fine) that the battery was pretty corroded.

    Thanks!

  • I have a '95 Sube Legacy FWD. She's rusty & trusty. Is it worth fixing her body and boring out the engine?

She has 150k and a rusted right rear quarter panel, but handles really well and has never given me any problems. I can't exactly afford the Chevelle SS of my dreams, so I'm thinking of just working with what I have. I know people tune WRX's all the time, but Legacys? Is it even worth however much it would cost on a 12-year old car? I don't want to do too much, just restore the body and get some more horsepower out of the engine. She's front-wheel drive with the 2.2 flat four. Thanks!
