Can a Police Dispacher Order you to secure your firearm?
While on the phone with 911 in Tampa, FL. For a disturbance call of a man walking down my street yelling "Are you a Cop?" Initially with NO one present on the streets even, drawing myself and all of my neighbors out of their homes yell his question at them, having explained the situation to dispatch and giving updated information, one of the neighbors, admittedly should not have told him they were themselves going to call the police, agitated the man with this and he starts yelling out your dead your dead I'll kill you, and then leaves his Stroller that he was pushing and rushes their fence line and pulls a piece of fence out, I inform the dispatcher that I intend to defend my neighbor and hold the suspect until a patrol car arrives, she immediately orders me back into my house and to get the firearm away from my person for Officer Safety.
For reference and now hindsight , thankfully the suspect backed off my neighbors anyhow and was then lost in the darkness before the police arrived 15 minutes later to begin a half hearted search.
But the question remains, does the dispatcher have the actual authority to do such a thing, possibly allowing the suspect to carry out his threats un-opposed?
