  • Upbeat one minute monologue?

I've got an audition coming up this week that requires an upbeat one minute monologue. I'm trying to find one that is A) actually funny, and B) not horrendously over-done. I'm trying to stay away from monologues that aren't from actual shows, unless they're amazing. As for over-done, I'm talking the bird monologue from The Fantasticks, Emily from Out Town, you know the drill.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • Should I move away from home?

I'm 15, and before you say it's crazy, I'd be moving in with my grandmother, not like my 45-year-old boyfriend or anything. I've lived in a small town all my life, and for the past 3 years, I've hated every second of it. Everyone here knows each other so of you mess up even a little bit, everyone will know. It's just not a nice environment. On top of that, I went through a period of severe depression which resulted in me losing the majority of my friendships.

This year I've had the opportunity to go back and forth between my hometown and the city where my grandmother lives (5 hours away) every weekend because of work (I'm an actress). I'll most likely have to do this again this year should i choose not to move. I absolutely adore it there and I've made so many wonderful friends and I've even managed to snag myself a boyfriend. I don't have the best relationship with my grandmother, but we can be civil.

My mom and my grandmother have agreed that I can move if I want and that it's entirely up to me, but it's a really hard decision. I'm just going into high school now so I'd be in a new school no matter where I end up. I know I shouldn't leave a town just because of a bad vibe, the same way I shouldn't move to a town just because I love the people there.

This is really long-winded and a lot to take in, but maybe you guys could help me out and give me some advice? I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance!

  • How can I get my romantic lead to be more comfortable around me?

I'm playing Mina Harker in a youth production of Dracula. I'm fifteen and the Mr to my Mrs is 16. Throughout the play, our characters are separated, we don't see each other until the second-to-last scene. in that scene we have to be apart (Mina is all vampy, no one wants her making her hubby into a vamp). So anyways, in the very last scene, last page, my character is no longer vampire-ized and it's all 'Woo-hoo! Rejoice!' and then Mina & husband kiss, BAM, lights down, curtain. So obviously my husband and I don't have a whole lot of time in rehearsals where we get to know each other and all that like the normal romantic leads would. My problem is the guy playing Jonathan Harker is really awkward around me. It's a really 'touchy' play (obviously, seeing as there's quite a bit of neck biting/kissing and all around closeness), so everyone in the cast is trying to be close to one another; but I feel like Jonathan and I should be extra comfortable around each other because we only have 15 minutes of the play to show the audience how totally in love we are. I've tried talking to him, but it's hard because of the whole him being awkward thing. I want to ask him to hang out outside of the play, but I'm worried he'll think I'm asking him on a date or something. How should I approach this?

  • How to use your quad muscles less when dancing?

I'm 14, I've been dancing for 10 years, competitively for 9. My problem is that my quad muscles are reeally big. As in, when I turn sideways you can see how much definition I have because my thigh juts out. I don't have a huge problem with it, it's just that I know I'm using the wrong muscle for all of my leg extensions that need to stay in the air (side lay-overs, grande pirouettes, etc). I know I'm supposed to be using the muscle that is on the back side of your leg, about where your quads are- but you know, the other side. My teacher says that that muscle is really weak in comparison so I should do some exercises to get them stronger and then I'll be able to use that strength more so than that which is my quads. Does anyone know any good exercises for this muscle (also what it's called) that aren't too stressful on hamstrings (I'm in rehab for one that I severely pulled). Thanks all!

  • What to wear to a tv audition?

Alright kiddies, have I got a mission for you. I've got an audition on Monday for a new television show. I know you're supposed to dress for the part, but I'm not quite sure how with this one. The character is a 15-year-old angry "twitter kid" girl that won't confide in her parents on any given day. This is directly from my sides, well the abridged version, anyway:

father: look at the way she dresses, it's like casual sex Friday. She's 15 going on slutty.

girl: You think I dress slutty?

    father: Tastefully slutty.

So what do you suggest I wear? I want to look professional, but still fit the character. So what is tastefully slutty?

And don't tell me it's a scam. My agent booked it. I am not some idiot fangirl who wants to get on dIsn3YYYYYyyy!!!1!!!1

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Do you introduce your monologue in a theatre audition?

I have an audition in a couple of weeks for my local theatre company. I've been auditioning with them for years; but whenever I introduce my monologues the auditioners look kind of weirded out. I'm not sure if it's becasue you're not even supposed to introduce your monologue, or if it's because of the really obscure audition pieces I use. Thoughts?

    Thanks everyone (:

  • Being considered for a role on a new TV show..?

Hi everyone! There's going to be a new show being filmed in a town a couple of hours away from mine. The producers recently posted an add on the local audition site asking for teenage girls to email an inquiry about the role- experienced, or not. I've been acting for a while, and there's nothing to loose so I thought I'd give it a shot. They said post your name, age, and if you want- a resume and/or description of traing/experience. I don't feel my resume really shows what I can do all that well (leads in nobody plays don't look too pleasing), so I just gave a description. Here's my email:

Hi there, I'd like to be considered for the role of Anastasia on the new show you're filming.

My name is _________, and I'm currently 14 years old. I have been an avid member of "____" Children's Theatre for the past nine years and am an active member of the local theatre community. This past summer I spent three weeks bettering my abilities while at "well known local" Theatre camps.

Attached is a recent photo of myself. I sincerely hope you consider me for this role; I can be reached at ____________.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

    Cheers!

    _____my name____

My question is; is this professional? I feel like it's a bit... awkard? I don't know. Should I attach my weird resume, which has things like:

Sweet Sally (lead) - Wash Your Troubles Away

Evil Stepmother (lead) - Big Bad Musical, etc,etc

    *sigh* Thoughts?

  • Doctor Who fans? Help?

My boyfriend is a HUGE fan of Doctor Who. I've watched the show a couple of times with him before, but I've never really understood it, which leads me to my question: Where does one even begin to start watching Doctor Who? Season one, back in the 60s? Or can I skip a few doctors and pick up back stories as I go along? Thanks, everyone; much appreciated!

  • Alto/Mezzo-soprano audition song for 14 year old?

I'm auditioning for Beauty and the Beast/ Into the Woods at my Jr. high school (the directors are going to choose the show after they see the auditions). I would like to get the part of Belle or the Baker's Wife, and I NEED an audition song. I'm an alto/mezzo-soprano but I don't want to do anything vastly overdone like Wicked, Rent, Les Mis, Cats, or I Enjoy Being a Girl from Flower Drum Song. I was considering the following:

    There's a fine, fine, line- Avenue Q

Coolest Girl- A Very Potter Musical

My Friend the Dictionary- 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

I Speak Six Languages- 25th Annual Putnam County...

If anyone else has any suggestions for songs from shows like that then please say so! I'm a huge musical theatre geek and anything I haven't heard of I'll just look up anyways haha

Oh! Also please try to keep them somewhat new and contemporary feeling, I don't want to put anyone asleep!

    Thanks! :)

  • Acting resume for a 13-year-old?

Alright, so my audition for a theatre is on Sunday, and I need to get my resume ready. I've never needed a resume before in my acting experience so I'm not quite sure what to include. What I have so far is:

    -name

    -my height

    -contact info ...

Yes, I know that's basically nothing.

I've had big roles for my theatre company, but some of the plays were adaptations of original works, so should I include those? Also,I've taken speech & drama exams and received high marks on them, so I'm trying to figure out a way to include those..? AND, I've participated in local speech & drama festivals- even winning top prize, so you can imagine I'd want to include that, so, where on my resume? I'm an experienced dancer as well, so should I include that in the training section, or just put it my special skills section without reference as to how long? And lastly, how should I attach my head shot and resume? A lot of audition websites say not to paper clip it so I'm not quite sure..

Thank you soo much ! :D

  • Auditioning for the part of Miranda in The Tempest?

My local theatre is putting a production of The Tempest this year. Auditions are on the 17th & 18th of September. I need one contemporary monologue and one classical monologue (1-2 mins) and a section of a song to sing for my audition. I'm 13, almost 14, and the part calls for a young girl "just under 15". I have experience with Shakespeare and I was thinking of preforming Helena's "Wherefore was i to this keen mockery born?" (Act II, Scene II) for my classical. i have preformed this piece three times and received lots of praise for it. I was wondering if this is appropriate for an audition for Miranda..? Also, what are some suggestions for my contemporary monologue? I was thinking of singing a section of Lean on Me for the song as well.

This is my first audition for this theatre and we need resumes and head shots. Not professional head shots, but something that looks professional would be nice. So suggestions for those would be great too. I've done several plays for my acting company, participated in local speech festivals and taken my acting exams for the past 5 years.

And lastly, what do you wear to an audition? I'm new to this theatre and I want to make a good impression, and hopefully land this role. :)

    Thanks ! (:

  • Help! I pulled a muscle and lost almost all of my flexibility?

About a month ago I pulled my right hip flexer at summer dance class, i've done this before on my left leg, but not as severe. It's now fully healed, but I lost almost all of my flexibility on my right leg. I used to be able to kick high in the front and to the side, have an arabesque at about 110 degrees and do my right and left splits. Now I barely have my left splits and my kicks and arabesques are terrible. Regular classes are starting soon and we have our ADAPT dance exams in January. I've tried my normal stretches, but they're reeeally painful, and not an 'oh, this is good, I'm stretching my muscles' pain, but an 'oh my god, kill me' pain. So does anyone have any good stretches that can get me back my flexibility without making me die of pain? Thanks! (:

  • Help! I want to audition to be Charlie Brown ?!?

My drama group is doing the play "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" this year and obviously I want to be Charlie Brown. I think I might have a better chance of getting the part because the first dance has already been choreographed and I was Charlie Brown for that, but I don't want to get my hopes up. My teacher knows I can sing perfectly well in the range of the character, but so do a couple of other girls in my class. She's seen me do monologues as Charlie Brown before, but even so- I really want the part and I don't want to take my chances. We have to prepare a monologue and a song if we want a singing part- which C.B. is. If it's possible could you suggest a monologue or song that fits well for an audition? Just a section of the song, perhaps 30 seconds or so.

    Thanks! :)

  • Should I keep writing?

    My teacher says I should stop writing, he says my voice for writing doesn't come through enough when I write. Here's some samples;

    Alone (poem)

    I am lost,

Lost in a world of heartbreak and despair.

    I am abandoned,

In a place where the light does not reach.

    And I am alone,

    with everyone surrounding me-

    I am alone.

    Gone (poem)

    He's gone.

To the place where we all come to.

    Hell.

    And so, I plunge.

    Farther and Farther,

    Closer to death.

    Into the darkness.

    I can't see, breath.

    Trapped in the darkness.

    And so I am dead.

    But he is here.

    so life exsists

I'm twelve, so keep that in mind. the second poem is one I just made up on the spot, so its not one of my favorites.
