  • Is there a traditional amount for Hanukkah gelt?

I seem to remember the coins should be silver (USA dimes) and there should be 18, because Chai (life) is the number 18 in Hebrew.

  • 1880 Census Search Request?

Trying to locate John Hahn (b Apr 1875 IL) and brother James Hahn (b Dec 1876 IL) in the 1880 census. I do not know their parents' names. Parents were born Czech/Bohemia/Austria per other census records. The brothers were in Chicago in 1900-1930 censuses.

  • Divorce or death info on Vaclav Hasik?

Vaclav Hasik married Terezie(Theresa) Chochola in Chicago IL on 20 May 1901 at the Bohemia Free Thinkers Church. In August 1906, Terezie married Joseph Kopta in Michigan (while living in Chicago).

In Feb 1941, Terezie's two children submitted delayed birth registrations saying their father was James Hasik, locksmith for the railroad, born in Bohemia.

So -- what happened between Aug 1902 (nine months before Antionette was born) and Aug 1906 (the Kopta marriage)?

I haven't found a divorce or Vaclav's death in Cook County IL.

FYI FamilySearch.com has misinformation about Vaclav (married his daughter Antionette in 1910). And the James Hasik in the Nebraska census is too young to be this Vaclav/ James.

  • Need immigration and death information on Vaclav Hasik. Surname variations include Hosek, Hajek, Hashek?

Vaclav Hasik married Terezie Chochola in Chicago IL on 20 May 1901. In the April 1910 census, Terezie/Theresia is listed as the wife of Joseph Kopta with 2 children, Joseph age 8 and Antionette age 6. However, Terezie and Joseph Kopta married 20 Aug 1910 in Chicago IL.

On 10 March 1911, Terezie purchased a house at 7805 Drexel Ave, Chicago IL in her name only. The house was paid in full on 16 Jan 1913.

In Feb 1941, the children submitted delayed birth registrations as Joseph Hasik and Antionette Hasik. They said their father was James Hasik, locksmith, born in Bohemia. They were born at 7538 Maryland Ave, Chicago.

My guess is between Aug 1902 (nine months before Antionette was born) and Aug 1910 (the Kopta marriage) Vaclav left his family. I think they stayed in contact since the most likely source for the house money in 1911 was a death/insurance payment.

I can't find a death for Vaclav in Cook County IL.
