Why do brass instruments sound sharper when being played?
Something puzzled me for a long time, and asked an engineer once, but couldn't really explain why: How come that in the beginning, when a brass instrument is cold, sound flat and during play tends to get sharper.
The metal (an alloy of tin and copper) expands making the width larger andt thus the frequency lower, following this it should sound more flat.
Is the warmth itself doing something to the sound?
