  • Can ultrasound be used instead of X-rays?

I know X-rays is what is usually used when it comes to examining broken bones but I was wondering if there are other methods? Like for example ultrasound? I realise X-rays would probably be more effective, but would it be possible to use ultrasound when examining, for example, a broken arm?

  • Best roast turkey recipe?

So, being Swedish, turkey has never been a part of my cultural food heritage so to speak, but this year I want to add something different to the Christmas smorgasboard and I thought roast turkey might be the thing. However, I have no idea how to cook one (aside from the obvious: put it in the oven), and I have no idea what to do or not to do to make it moist and tasty. I've been looking around on recipe sites but there are so many versions I can't decide on one. So what is your method of cooking the perfect roast turkey? Any details will be appreciated.

  • How old did you have to be to get married in 19th century America?

I just watched the second episode of the BBC America show Copper (taking place in the 1860's) and in that episode they say that girls could legally be married off at the age of ten. Is this true? Or just poetic license? What was the age of consent in the US in the 19th century?

  • Who else have synesthesia?

And if you do, what kind?

Me, I feel letters, names and people as different colours (often a combination of colours). Some people *see* music as colours, something I'm rather jealous of. How about you?

  • What are your favourite songs ever?

I don't mean what's your favourite right now, but what are the songs that you keep coming back to and loving even after several years; the songs that will always mean something to you even if you're not currently listening to them.

    Some of mine are:

The Decemberists - We Both Go Down Together

    Blue October - Calling You

    Muse - Plug In Baby

    Muse - Shrinking Universe

    Soul Asylum - Runaway Train

The Libertines - What A Waster

    Jens Lekman - Black Cab

The Magnetic Fields - Abigail, Belle of Kilronan

  • In what British dialect is saw pronounced sawr?

I just watched Merlin and I noticed that Bradley James (Prince Arthur) pronounced the word saw as 'sawr'. I've never noticed this before and I was wondering where this pronounciation comes from. Is it a regional or a class thing?

  • Does anyone know of any walled parks in England?

Not public city parks like Hyde Park but parks belonging to a country house or castle, with walls surrounding their entire parks not just their gardens. (For example Althorp which has 550 acres of walled parkland.)

  • Can sugar take flavour from other things?

If you keep your sugar in a paper bag and keep it next to something smelly or stinky would the sugar take flavour from that and go bad? What about salt?

  • Inexpensive gifts for Christmas?

This year I'm pretty much entirely broke for Christmas so I won't be able to afford much when it comes to gifts. Still I want to give something as I know that I'll be given things. The people I need to figure out gifts for are:

    My mum (65 years old).

    My dad (60 years old).

    My Grandmother (83 years old)

My dad's gf (59 years old, we're fairly close)

    My three cousins (20, 16 & 10 years old)

  • Dinner for sixteen people?

So, I am to serve dinner to sixteen people (nothing fancy, just a regular meal but I would like it to be a little bit more interesting than just macaroni & cheese or similar) and while I enjoy cooking and is fairly decent at it, I usually only cook for 2-6 people at a time.

What would you recommend I make? I don't mind it taking time to make the dish, as long as it can be served hot to a lot of people at the table (so nothing deep-fried for example). No buffet dishes either as I'm trying to keep it fairly simple.

I'm basically looking for a main course and dessert dinner, but if you have an idea for appetizers I'd be happy to see them as well.

    Thanks!

  • Typical American Thanksgiving food?

I'm Swedish but I'm as I'm interested in cooking I'd like to try and make a typical Thanksgiving dinner this year. What dishes do you cook for Thanksgiving in your family? What would you consider to be a traditional Thanksgiving meal (aside from the turkey and cranberry sauce)?

Recipes or links to them would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

  • Why do Americans equate liberal with left wing or even socialist?

Liberal, in most of the world is center or right-wing. American liberals are by the standards of the rest of the world center or right-wing. So why do people keep shouting about pinko commies? Democrats aren't even close to being socialist! The ones furthest to the left *might* be considered social democrats but that's a bit of a stretch, and yet I keep seeing Republicans calling Obama a communist. Which, to be honest, is a bit absurd. Do you honestly believe this (and if so why?) or do you just use it as a propaganda catch phrase?
